Q:

Regularly, I come across a (usually a necro) player with a full complement of minions just killing a group of enemies in a fixed spawn location.

The player is obviously AFK and automatically looting anything that these enemies drop as they are simply standing, not attacking or moving whatsoever for sometimes hours at a time.

Functionally, this is the nearly the same as botting in terms of negative effect on the game and economy, etc.

Is this behavior considered botting by Anet?

I report them as botting but just trying to get a confirmation from the devs or someone in the know. Thanks.

As you stated above report them and let Anet sort it out. Here is a post from Anet about this issue since you asked:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Please-a-clear-statement-re-AFK-farming/page/6#post6161450

I’ll pitch in on this thread, as there seems to be some confusion about this situation.

The auto-cast feature was never intended to be used as an AFK farming mechanism, and usage of the auto-cast feature while AFK is fine as long as it is not used to facilitate unattended gameplay.

Mastery auto-loot also stopping players from being flagged afk seems like a bug instead of a feature, and I’ll be sure to bring it up today while we have a chat about this internally.

1) Using skill (1 or more) while AFK
2) AFKing in a place where it is beneficial for your character to be at
3) Unresponsive to interaction with GMs

If all 3 of these apply to what you are doing, you may get actioned for it.

There are several other Anet staff posts in the thread I linked. I’m just to lazy to quote them all.

If they’re not using a third party program to keep them from being logged out, then they’re not botting. However, there are rules about AFK farming. So, if someone appears to be AFK farming, you can report them for Botting; Anet will investigate it and decide if what they’re doing is allowed or not.

I reckon if they do it for long enough they could earn, ooh, 2 or 3 silver coins….

I have reported several of these players specifically in the bitterfrost frontier near the first brazier the same rangers or necros everyday for hours at a time you can guess when they are afk because of when the storm kicks up all the champions most of the time you see a champion or 2 in a single spot everyone goes to tag them for the loot ..not these players they sit still their pets or minions rarely get hit so they don’t get the loot I can only assume they are indeed AFK and since I continue to see these players after several reports over the weeks its a safe bet anet has made up their mind in regards to this issue

Poor necros, aren’t allowed to be good at anything /j

Edit: Actually I think simply reporting won’t solve the basic issue of necros being able to afk with a minion build considering how the traits can work together. What I’m trying to say is that anyone can easily do it without even knowing the rules of botting, so the reports will probably most of the time not do anything.

That’s why ArenaNet has given conflicting answers on the subject. Back at launch, they were actually banning people, as botting like this was rampant, like 20+ people at the tunnel in cursed shore. Even people simply AFKing were sometimes caught up in it, like stories of engineers forgetting a turret at an event. Simply AFKing however is not against the rules, hence the conflict. Intentionally abusing the mechanics to bot however is right on the edge. It’d take a week at least for someone to investigate, likely a month. It’d be no accident at that point.

I doubt these people are actually getting banned however, otherwise I’d expect to see more complaints, like on reddit. Any bans would however only be for 24-72 hours, as they’d be a warning, which would ramp up for repeated offences.

(necros are the best for casual play, which is also why they should never be at the top without a huge sacrifice)

They ban botters in waves to reduce chances of them improving their programs to avoid detection. And if it had been some time, they may have given some of them temp bans that they apparently didn’t learn from.

Must have been some short bans good to know anet is so forgiving when it comes to these things players can commit the same offense over and over again until anet gets tired of dealing with them *If it ever gets to that point

I can show you many articles by computer gaming mags which say that Anet ‘is forgiving’ on those reports.

In game reporting is broken, very, very, very, broken and usually ignored, rarely flagged.

Apparently you aren’t reading industry standard stories on how broken some of GW2 really is.

Or you just caught them between ban waves.

Remember, they don’t ban immediately after so as to keep botters guessing as to what got them banned.

I’m not saying that Anet has a perfect track record on these things (after all, human beings make mistakes all the time). However, since neither you nor I actually have direct experience with how Anet handles in-game reports, I’m reluctant to take “many articles by computer gaming mags” as accurate evidence of lax standards.

I guess since we cant really prove for or against whether or not Arena Net is actually banning them its just speculation at this point but my thoughts tend to wander on the possibility that if Arena Net was actually banning players for doing this you would think that would discourage some others from doing it ..which I havnt come across a lot of atm no exaggeration any given day I can wander into an example zone like bitterfrost frontier and see a ranger or necro farming the braizers afk on the off chance anet is actually banning them and the players are still doing it that says how short the ban was not enough to discourage the deed weighed vs the consequence of doing it
