Are dungeons in this game based off of speed and efficiency, like speed running and such?

I just started playing a few ago and hit level 40 just doing world event things, I still have my level 30 living quest thinggy to start, and I am so enjoying running aroudn the world and exploring.

I have really been enjoying the exploration aspect of this game, but it has been sitting in the back of my mind and worrying me that dungeons are just going to be “zerg go go go go!!! FASTER!!! ARGFHGRAWRA!!” Which has been what has been turning me off to other MMO as of recent.

Dungeons are yes. Doesn’t mean you have to play that way (our Guild plods through them slowly), but most pug groups will whizz through them quickly.

Fractals (similar to dungeons but in shorter bursts from a central hub in Lions Arch) tend to be a different matter since they are the mainstay of instanced content and are better designed than the core dungeons from launch.

Well there are those who like t speedrun dungeons/fractals/stuff. Those players don’t have time to explain or explore, they also won’t wait for you to “get there I don’t have the WP yet” and they won’t take you along if you’re running “that flavorfull green clerics set” you like.

But those are not the only ppl doing said content. Luckily the game provides a LFG-Tool which lets you specify the kind of pl you’re looking for as well as the language. Sure, the game doesn’t check for you if the pugs you find match your expectations. But the better you word your request the more likely you’l find likeminded ppl.

- : Mounts, ViP-Player systems, HoT-like Xpacs

Speed and efficiency are not required in Dungeons, however, in pick-up groups, you’ll mostly find people who know the fast zerg strats and that won’t bother to explain anything to you, be it the normal strat or the fast one.

Try to find people of the same mind, that run content at the same speed than yourself. A guild is a good place to start, but you can also try the LFG. Just be sure to state if you’re beginning and what pace you want. If you see a group in the LFG that says “exp”, it stands for “experienced” and means people will rush and skip without waiting people left behind.

The dungeons themselves are not designed that way. There is no requirement to rush through any part and a few of them actually include ‘easter eggs’ to find if you wander off the intended path, things which don’t give you extra items or gold but can be interesting to see. There are no leaderboards and the rewards are the same if you take 3 minutes or 3 hours.

Some players do like to do dungeons as fast as possible, because what they’re actually interested in is the reward you get for completing it, so they want to maximise their profit by spending as little time as possible getting it.

But that doesn’t mean you have to do it that way. Ask your guild or make your own listing in the Looking For Group tool and let people know you want to do it slowly, listen to the NPCs etc. and you should be able to find like-minded people to do it with you.

They used to be, Now not so much. A lot of groups will want you to be lvl 80 though.

Some also want players with experince with dungeons.
I even met players that want players based on their AP, 3 players kicking me for not having 10k achievements points.

Dungeons, when first released, where essentially “raiding lite”, since GW2 doesn’t use a hard trinity class system. They are significantly harder to do, required a cohesive build, and required the player be able to understand simple mechanics and enemy tells. This lead to a much smaller margin of error compared to open world, but any half way competent player could easily make their way through most exploration paths. The story paths were just interactive story elements, and even back in the old days could done solo if you’re build was even semi-durable.

What poisoned Dungeons was the speed run meta/zerks meta, due to it having the highest payout rate of any PvE content at the time. This was before champ bags, before chest trains, before pop up chests and meta rewards, and before Magic find could be had in significant amounts. Back then 100g was considered a big deal, and could take a couple months to get with open world farming. But dungeons would pay out in gold and tokens, and those tokens could be converted into gold/precurors via the mystic forge. It was also the fastest way to gear up a character with zerk armor, since T6 mats in general were difficult to obtain. Its also a requirement for Legendary weapons. And so people wanting to make gold would speed run dungeons for the daily token bonus, with any additional drops/chests being extra money on top.

For the most part, those people aren’t there to enjoy the content… they’re there to bang out the rewards as quickly as possible, so they can move on to the next most rewarding thing they can do with their time. Raids have the same issue as well; where the population is distilling in toxicity, as everyone wants experienced people, but no one wants to train new people so they get better.
