Q: Is Heart of Thorns included for free when I buy Path of Fire?

A: No. As we said when we announced Heart of Thorns, we always want to give you the option to purchase both expansions for a single price. With the purchase of any edition of Path of Fire, you can add in Heart of Thorns during checkout and purchase both expansions together for less than the combined prices of the expansions. If you already own Heart of Thorns or only want to play Path of Fire, you can purchase Path of Fire separately.

HoT is not included with PoF.
PoF does not require HoT.
When purchasing PoF you can add on HoT for $20/€20.

I don’t particularly understand this response based on information from the HoT outrage 2 years ago. Here’s an example:

“What it means is that for one price you will get the new expansion plus the original game and any previous expansions thrown in, an NCSoft spokesperson clarified. That’s the same as with the £34.99/€44.99 Heart of Thorns bundle, in other words.” – Linky

Why has this policy changed now? I was looking forward to buying PoF and getting HoT since I haven’t played GW2 for about 2 years. Now, I’m second guessing whether I should buy PoF as since it’s been so long since I’ve played I can be perfectly content playing just the Core for a significant amount of time.

You get Core, Heart of Thorns, and Path of Fire for one price. That price is $49.99 (or whatever your currency is). Same price as the last expansion (plus Core).

Or, you can buy a la carte. No policy change.

Oh, and you left this part out of your quote above:

I followed the following statement up with ArenaNet: "In the future, if we release further Guild Wars 2 expansions, we plan to offer all of the prior expansions, the core game, and the latest expansion for one single purchase price."

I wasn’t sure what it meant. Did it mean there will only be one purchase-option if/when another expansion comes out? No. “We could offer different SKU ‘packages’ just as we are currently with Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns,” ArenaNet said.

So will that be at the same £35 price tag? “We can’t confirm pricing for possible future expansions,” ArenaNet said.

Good luck.

Maybe I didn’t understand the “SKU” part clearly as when I quoted it, it seemed largely irrelevant to me. Is this implying that we’d have to buy essentially a “battle chest” under a new account to receive this kind of discount? If that’s the case, that seems troubling as well and still gives me no real incentive to purchase either of the expansions under my particular situation.

Edit: To further clarify the issue I have here – I believe the entire HoT fiasco was because new players could wait for the launch of HoT and get HoT and Core for approximately $35. And the wording of that article makes it seem like each expansion, it would include all previous expansions and Core for essentially the same price as the newest expansion.

That’s not completely out of reach to believe that’s how it was going to work since that’s exactly how it worked with HoT. Now let’s do a thought experiment here: What if GW2 goes the way of WoW and has 4+ expansions all roughly $35 on average. What do you think is a better way of getting the maximal amount of players in? 4 x $35, or a single $35 payment to get all old content + the newest content?
