Question about ranger armor
What race are you? Racial armor is usually nice. Other than that, I find leather armor kind of lacking in the looks department. The gem shop has a few nice skins, but still overall leather could be better.
It also depends on which race you’re playing as a ranger. I have a human ranger, and a few of the armors I actually find appealing. And of course it’s all entirely subjective.
Even early levels, if you have certain armor skins unlocked you don’t have to settle for “generic looking” armors.
Just medium armour will do since Engineers and Thieves share it. Once you’ve unlocked a bunch of medium armour pieces and can mix and match from a broader range you should be able get a look that you like. Check out the mix and match mega thread if you want to see some ideas.
It doesn’t excuse the abundance of coats, though.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Yeah . . . seeing another set of trenchcoats is kind of . . . tiresome.
Tastes will vary. I have a ton of Medium armor styles I like (and wear,) but there are very few Heavy styles that interest me.
well first thing. Gw2 dont really have fancy, sexy armor. like AION, BLADE AND SOUL. if you like armor ONLY you pick the wrong game.
secondly medium class do have good looking armor. but mostly exotic armor. check out wiki you will have all armor preview for all class and all races
Medium heritage armour if you have access to it looks good on just about every race which is nice, then the sylvari tier 2 and 3 are solid as well the charr medium and norn and the human tier 2 and 3. Or a combination of things lie my human ranger uses tier 3 coat, pants and boots then heritage shoulders gloves and mask. While the medium is lacking especially compared to all the glorious ones we had in gw1 there still some that look good.

You can preview all armor skins avaliable in the game, even if you dont have then unlocked. Just go to the bank, then click on the wardrobe tab, then select medium armor, in there you can see all the armors skins and look at what kind of look you will want for you character when you reach lvl 80. Before you reach lvl 80 you will have to keep running around in ugly armor unless you have any outfit.
As others have stated armor looks is very subjective. I really like the Norn female cultural sets for instance.
While leveling it can be hard to find sexy armor but you can always grab an outfit from the gem store that can fit the bill until you get to level 80 where better armor options open up. Check out your cultural sets as there are some good ones out there.
Tastes differ I’m afraid. Unless you’re referring to Charrmour…
It’s highly subjective but I find them pretty bland and uninspired as well. Basically every set comes down to; Trenchcoats which are weirdly designed.. They just don’t look comfortable to wear and because of that doesn’t seem to “fit” well on your character.
It looks awkward
The Karma set is O.K. I think that it looks good because it’s not flashy, the pieces are well put togheter, looks pretty comfortable and the pieces represent the materials it is made out of very well.
I bought the Jungle Explorer outfit for my lvl 17 female Elonian Engineer and it looks awesome! The mix between the outfit and the Flame Thrower/Rifle is epic
She looks like an African guerilla trooper and the only two things she lacks now is one of the cooler backpacks you can craft and a Beret (unfortunately we can’t mix outfits with helms T_T).

Tbh if you’re looking for non-trench coats your options are kind of limited till 80. That’s when you get access to carapace, dungeon gear, and more loot gear. (Although karma gear is also nice (including the wvw skins too))

Why is ranger armor/medium armor so ugly? Sorry, I know this sounds silly, I admit it. (And this is probably not the question you were expecting either.) But I’m genuinely curious. I’m almost level 50 and practically every set of armor I’ve encountered is hideous. Nice-looking gear and weapons has always been the main driving force that keeps me leveling in a MMO. And so far I’ve been disappointed. :/ I guess my real question is…does ranger armor improve appearance-wise beyond level 50?
As aesthetic taste is subjective, only you can answer that question. You can preview all armour pieces in the Wardrobe tab in the bank (including those you haven’t unlocked). Although this only shows the skins, and often what appears to be a boring or ugly piece of armour can be made amazing by giving it the right dye scheme. Or by mixing and matching with the right other pieces of armour.
I certainly haven’t had trouble making looks I like for all armour weights.
personally i dont bother with how my armor looks util lv 80
then i pick a stat combo that i see my self using most of the time (probbably zerker cause i tend to play dungeons a lot..)
THEN i take off aaaall my clothes OFF, and then stand in front of a bank for HOURS clicking and previewing all the skins form the game to find my perfect mix of skins for my armor.
most of the time i already have them unlocked, others im able to buy off the tp.
For example on my Heavy class i use crafted skins gloves and boots, head of koda for helmet, body armor is 2nd tier human cultural armor and pants are from the vigil.
Then i search for those items with those skins, unlock the skins and transmute them on my gear i use the most.
It takes a few hours of clicking and checking and writing down names of skins and comparing them with each other, but in the end i have my very own custom perfect looking armor set
With my alt females i use:
Human Tier 3
Norn Tier 3
Zho -Glove/Shoulder.
Strider Armor.
Arah and COE armors are also among my favorites.
Armor you find while leveling is usually so-so and the same looking. It gets much better when you reach level 80 and have access to all skins. That being said, cultural sets are usually very pretty and come in the levels 35, 60 and 80. Some karma pieces from heart vendors look pretty snazzy too (heck, one of my level 80’s still uses some of it). Furthermore, you may want to look into outfits, that you can wear regardless of level or type of armor. It really helps when leveling.
I previewed the armor pieces for my ranger. The problem wasn’t that individual pieces aren’t nice, many are actually quite detailed and beautiful with the right dyes. It’s that so many have the same silhouette. It’s leads to the feeling, you’ve seen one ranger armor, you’ve seen them all. Females have a few non Trenchcoat/jacket to the hips options but males are severely limited.
Why aren’t there at least as many form hugging outfits for males. Why not more for both sexes?
For some reason, when ANet was designing medium armor they decided that all medium armor should be long coats. There are only a handful of options that deviate from this design, and as far as I know they are all exclusively female armor, meaning that 2/5ths of the races can’t even make use of them, along with half of the remaining three.

Iirc there is one single male non Trenchcoat/jacket option. It’s the Glorious armor available thru PvP.
If you’re a Male and not a Charr (Their racial chest piece has no coat/skirt) there’s really only 1 decent chest piece, which was added recently. You have to finish an Spvp track for it though. If you’re a Female there’s 2-3 options, human racial and duelist.

For females there are also at least two gemstore options, Krytan and Strider’s. And those tops can be combines with other sets to have a miniskirt, short skirt or hot pants with thigh high leggings.
There are arguably many skins for all type of armors (without substracting personal dislikes). The real problem is, from lvl1 to about lvl60, when you’re on your first toon, you only get to swap between the 3 basic skins from the start with just increased stats.
it’s only around lvl70 or so that you get access to some of the cool armor skins.
At lvl80 there’s so much skin available at once that it feels stupid they weren’t dispatched between all the levels.
Just look at what the armor vendors have in their stocks… :/
The problem doesn’t occure anymore with alts, since you’ve accumulated enough materials/karma/gold to equip them with the cool stuff while leveling them.
drop system and vendor system is a real lackluster in this game. It’s not the selling point of it.
At lvl50 I guess you still get to equip newb looking armors
