Hi folks! I got scammed. Fool me once right?

Anyway, long story short person says he’s going to send me an item, I send him gold. Since there is no face to face trading I take the chance. Bad idea apparently. I accept that it was a risky decision and is totally my loss.

My question is… Is this type of behavior condoned? Is there any repercussions/punishment for people who engage in this? I see people trying to trade in the chat all the time. Are those just scammers trying to get your gold? Why, if this behavior is against ToS, is there so much of it?

There is an option to report scammers R.click > Report> Scamming, something like that you could file a support ticket as well they could help with it and i don’t think anet tolerate any kind of action.

No, that behavior is not condoned. You can file a report with support. They do suspend/ban players for scamming but they will not tell you the out come.

I did report him —> Scamming. Hopefully that will accomplish something. I wonder if there is any chance of recovering my losses.

My understanding is there is no hope of getting money or items back. While they do punish scammers, items or money may be long gone and so unretrievable. Since they can’t guarantee you will get items back and because they want to discourage trading outside the Trading Post, their policy is any items sent by email is considered a gift and not returnable.

I figured. Kind of an odd system though if you ask me. I’m so used to trading face to face in other mmo’s.

I am sorry for your loss. And curious. What difference would it make if the scammer was ‘face-to-face’ with you? I mean, if the method of exchange was the same….whether he is across the zone or standing right in front of you, you would still have trusted enough to send him the gold first, no?

In other MMOs that I have played, the face-to-face trade is a special window. All items to be traded must be in the box and then both can click “accept.” If one of the items is subsequently withdrawn (as in an attempted scam), the “accept” status resets and then both members must again accept. It is a much more scam-proof system than sending by mail. WoW also has a COD option on the mail which allows a person to send an item COD…and the other party cannot take the item until they accept…which automatically deducts gold from them. I don’t see anything in GW2 that works that way…but I have not really explored it.

Ok, you are asking about a different method…nothing really to do with being near said player. GW2 does actually have a method of trading that is scam-proof. It is the Trading Post, and barring a glitch, you will never lose your gold with no item to show for it.

To be honest and I know I won’t make friends with this post but it has to be said. If you as a player decide to sent someone money with the hope of getting an item, then that’s clearly your own fault. I don’t support that, don’t get me wrong but it’s more on a morale basis than a so called “scam” basis. GW2 gives you the option to do all your tradings and purchases via TP, if you as a player decide to cut the transaction fee’s then that’s your own risk and there’s nothing that can be done about it. At the end of the day it’s the support team that has to waste hours of reading chat logs and wasting their time that could be invested in a lot of other things, if players would think before acting. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it’s just common sense.

Guild Wars 1 had player to player trading with several or most of the same features. You both had to accept the trade before it went through and it warned you if the offer was changed. Scamming was still too common, mostly due to people being impatient but it still happened frequently enough to hear about it. And the accusations in chat where one person would be spamming the message, [CHARACTER NAME] IS A SCAMMER, to everyone in the map. The TP has the great benefit of being unscammable. I can’t see how trading person to person is worth the risk of being scammed and the time and cost to Support needed to unravel accusations of scamming.

Like I said originally. I accept that this is my own fault. I won’t be doing it again. I was more wondering if there is likely to be any repercussions for the scammer. Otherwise everyone (without morals) will just scam every new player they can with no fear of being banned.

What the rules say is, the first offense is usually a warning, the second is a usually 72 hours suspension. Each offense after that gets a longer suspension until they are banned.

They won’t tell you the specifics of what they do and you don’t get your items back. They also don’t say what they do about the disputed items but since the scammer may no longer have the gold or items, they may not do anything.

GW1 had that interface. The complaints of scamming got so bad that it’s the very reason GW2 doesn’t have that interface.

If they can prove that you were scammed then they will at least give a temp ban to the scammer. This means you need chat logs confirming the agreed trade, and the mail logs need to show the scam. Just right click on the persons name and click report. Next select the scammer option. The chat and mail logs will be reviewed.

However customer service will NOT give you your items back. They don’t want to condon the use of mail as trade so any items lost to scammers are lost permanently.

I doubt they will discourage this behavior since they’ve already stated that they don’t want anyone trading or selling outside the TP, so scams actually work to reinforce their position.

I haven’t been on GW1 in probably 5 years, so I don’t remember the trading interface. In the game I’m thinking of, people would do something like “oh here have some free stuff along with the (expensive) item you want!” Then they’d fill the trade window with junk until the first item scrolled off the screen, and then pull it out of the trade.

It’s been a year, but iirc, you were limited to a panel of 5 items and a max of 100k plat.

People would try to scam by putting in less than the agreed amount of money, less than the agreed number of items or putting in a junk item with a similar icon as the wanted item. The scams all pretty much depended on the other person being careless with checking it over first or naive. I remember one guy who put in 50k plat instead of 60k in one attempted scam of me. (Then tried to argue he only did it because he was poor but he wanted the item I was selling).

Example: Mursaat tokens were used to scam others with direct trading in place of globs of ectoplasm.

The system in most MMOs I’ve played requires both players to put what they’re trading in the trading window and hit “accept”. Neither gets the item until both hit accept, and when both do, both parties get their items (or money) at the same time. If you change the item you’re offering, the other person’s accept button deactivates so he/she has a chance to check the new item before accepting the trade. Still some people did get scammed with such a system, sometimes people tried to sell much cheaper items with simmilar icons to more expensive ones, or advertised to craft an item if you gave them the materials, then ran way with them.

If you do the trade by mail, whoever sends the first one is at risk, since the other person can just never send the payment/item back. Still it’s highly unlikely a face to face trading system will be added to the game, since they already have the trading post that serves as both as a trading system and as a gold sink.
