To be honest, I wasn’t really sure how to search for this question, so I apologize if an answer is rather obvious.

A friend of mine had to start a free account, as he didn’t want to transfer his entire existing EU account over to play with my husband and I. I’ve felt pretty bad watching him deal with the restrictions of the free accounts, and I’d like to gift him an upgrade. So I went poking at the cash shop to see what I could do. What I’m unclear about is what I can buy him to upgrade his account to “not free”.

There’s currently a “Digital Deluxe” upgrade for ~$30 on the shop (not HoT). It doesn’t make any mention of this removing f2p restrictions, but then neither does the HoT upgrade. Would this “Digital Deluxe” upgrade remove the f2p restrictions on his account if I gifted it to him?

I’m pretty sure you can’t gift an account upgrade like that. You could buy it separately tho and give him the codes.

You can not gift account with in game store. Have to buy code from Anet web store or other authorize seller. Then can send code to them to upgrade.

Yes, the Digital Deluxe makes the account a “normal” (not free) account. But, as the others said, you can’t gift him an account upgrade like that. What you could do is either send him the gold he’d need to upgrade to the Deluxe or buy a gem card for him (give him the code on the back so that he can redeem the gems himself).

I think this is incorrect. Only way to upgrade free account is with real money purchase. Digital deluxe upgrade in gem store only for upgrade paid core account to deluxe or paid HoT account to that deluxe version.

I think Qugi is right. Tho even if he isn’t (in my opinion) if you’re going to dish out $30 and only end up getting him the core game it is more worth it just to put another $20 into it for HoT. But what Qugi said makes sense.

You could always contact support and ask them for a definitive answer.

Hm, you may be right. So yeah, OP, you might want to check with support to be completely sure.

I recently created a FTP account to try it out, see if it was something I could recommend to others. Then I bought the original GW2 off Amazon for ~$16 and applied that code to the FTP account, making it a normal core GW2 account.

So you could buy the game and have it shipped to them, or shipped to you and then send them the code.

That assumes you’re happy with the core game.

The “Digital Deluxe Upgrade” is for if you bought the standard version of the game. It gives you the extra miniatures, etc. that came with the deluxe version.

When I upgraded from the free version I just bought the expansion via the web store and it mailed me the product key, so you should be able to just forward the key to your friend.
