Q:

Hello, ArenaNet.
Once a long time ago (in 2013) I’ve been a fan of Your game. Guild Wars 2 I liked its atmosphere and I would love to play it, but…
It is very difficult to understand the plot and what was going on in the game, as I (like many Russian players) are quite weak in the English language.
And without an understanding of the environment play games of the RPG genre makes no sense.
What I’m saying? Your game, I’m sure, will be popular in the Russian sector of the market, if released Russian localization.
However, the message is still different. Please answer all of the Russian-speaking community, which is interested in your project, whether Russian localization in General?
Should we hope for her appearance or it is better not to waste our time on empty hopes?
Thanks in advance for the answer.

I apologize for the fact that the communication made with the help of online translator.

They already have to record 40 different actors for each line. Adding another language would mean 10 more actors (5 races X 2 sexes) and they would need to go back over all the whole game re-recording everything. There would also be the cost of converting all text to Russian. A considerable cost for translation of the whole game, voice actors, and time.

In addition, if they have another language they would probably need to add Russian support with people capable of speaking Russian, as all the other languages have their own support. Also not cheap.

Unless there would be a huge numbers of new Russian players to pay for this it would lose them money.

Your question is well written and understandable, so no need to apologise

A russian localisation (along with other languages) has been asked for a few times now, but I don’t think it’s going to happen unfortunately.

Translating a game is a never-ending task and very costly. Not only would they have to pay for the current game to be translated (a huge job in itself), any future releases or even updates would need translations too. A whole permanent team would have to be assembeled- a forum team, support team etc- just like how it is for the French, German and Spanish translations of the game. It would require making a new server for Russian speakers (or changing an old one and allowing existing residents to move freely) which would change how WvW match-ups work.

So then you have to look at how many new players will be brought to the game because of a Russian localisation, and how much money that will bring. I’m sure that Anet have considered localising the game for other languages, but if the cost is greater than the expected profit… well, they’re just not going to bother.

From what I’ve seen, Russian speakers already have a workaround. I’ve seen a few Russian guilds recruiting and people talking in chat using romanised russian. I’m sure it’s more inconvenient than being able to use the cyrillic alphabet.

Tl;Dr: The game is a business. Even if a translation would make things easier for Russian friends and entice more to play, if the profits don’t outweigh the costs, A-net is just not going to do it.

It’s understandable. However, among my friends and distant acquaintances, there are many people from buying the game pushes only the lack of Russian language. Besides, there is no need to voice the game in Russian. Sufficient translation of the text, I assure you. We play games with subtitles very often, especially in recent years.

sorry for the translation using the translator

It wouldn’t require a new server. The servers with language designations are obsolete since magaservers came out. They also were ANet acknowledging something players did at launch, which was working out which servers they should go to for their own language. So even if arenanet added a new language there would be no new servers or new WvW.

So even if arenanet added a new language there would be no new servers or new WvW.

If it brought a huge amount of new players to the game (y’know, for it to actually be worthwhile/beneficial for A-net), there would be a lot of Russian players who might not be able to communicate in English (which is why a translation would be needed).

A designated server would be ideal or existing residents of current servers would probably be annoyed if they can no longer communicate effectively in WvW. It’s not something I personally would complain about, but I’m sure that a good portion of players would (from previous experiences in-game). Besides, at launch there was free movement between servers, so people could easily move if they found out that their servers had been designated a certain language or play-style by the community. I think dropping the borders might be a little chaotic now.

These things do need to be considered, after all. Implementing a new localisation of the game has to be fair on existing ones too or else you risk losing players.

I’m not trying to be depressingly cynical- I think it would be great if more major languages had their own translations as I can understand that not being able to fully understand and appreciate a game would be annoying. I just think it would be very difficult for it to happen now.

The petition has already been. And signatures too have collected a sufficient number for a short time. I think the signatories was even more than was required. Unfortunately, we were then told that at that time, they have plans to transfer there. Waiting for news on this issue for the third year…

Fair enough- I’m not wrapped up enough in the topic to know about petitions that have been and gone and other things. Perhaps you could post lnks to the petition here as to publicise it/share it again? Maybe you’ll get more signatures

But I would’ve thought that if a translation was absolutely planned and it was just taking time to complete, I think they would announce it to gather hype. There’s a chance that people would buy and start playing the game before the translation was added to get a head start, for example?

One of the previous threads on that topic did get an answer, and it was that Anet wasn’t planning anything like that.
Not going to look for that post, however – it was quite a long time ago.

Actions, not words.

Good to know, maybe I’ll have a look for it for the OP Thanks!

EDIT:

(removed link for petition because I’ve now been reminded that posting petitions is against the forum rules… but it’s not difficult to find)

41k votes is pretty significant- I hope they have looked into it in respects to how that would correlate to people who would be interested in the game if it was in Russian.

A dev response about localisation, although a bit vague in regards to game localisation

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Cyrillic-letters-in-the-chat
A dev/mod response about adding cyrillc/russian

I’ve finished looking after searching 4 pages of google results- the topics coming up are less related to the search query so I would assume I’ve found most/all with a mod/dev response on them. I haven’t looked through reddit though, but I do know that devs are pretty active there if anybody fancies having a look.

Learn English or spanish. But Ya it’s kinda off with no Russian localization considering eastern europe.
