1-2 years ago I have seen posts in many sites stating future updates and expansions will be free. aka you dont have to pay for it.

So my question is is the expansion thing going to be free? Or it will cost gems?

1. We have no idea if it even is an expansion.
2. We have no idea if it’ll be free or not.
3. You’ll need to watch the official announcement for any real info.

No one will know until they say.

If it follows the GW1 model, it will be B2P.

I hope it’s payable content, why? NO FREE content is as good as Buy-able content.
I don’t want another living story “expansion”, or what ever connected to Living Story only, if that’s so, i’m gone for good

Today will either be happy or sad day for ArenaNet. I just hope this 75% sale is not meant to cover all the people that would rage quit if twitch stream wont bring any good :///

Aye, I agree, they would tell us, and it is very likely that it is what they are going to do in a couple of hours.

I have no idea what you are talking about. No one has said anything about an expansion.

actually trailer sounds like an announcement of somekind-of-expansion – it may not be expansion in meanings we know though….

They never said all updates would be free. The living story is not free for new players is it? Why would they drop the price of the game by 75% and then offer a free expansion? They wouldn’t because an expansion would sell itself.

If it’s an actual expansion, it’ll most likely cost money. Don’t expect it to be sold in the gem store either. It’s not guaranteed to be an expansion however and it could just simply be an improvement on the living world concept, which would likely be free or sold as small packages in the gem store. Selling content in the gem store however would create a bad image for the game since it would introduce pay walls which are commonly found in F2P games.

Cash shop vs an expansion, F2P vs a subscription. It’s simply a mindset some people have, similar to how some people dislike DLC and see it as intentionally holding back parts of the game, yet a full expansion is treated like a new release. When a boxed expansion is revealed, people simply know what to expect because it’s a standard. Selling it in parts through the store however, what are you going to expect? Would you rather buy 10 DLC or 1 expansion? Which would be better? Would 10 DLC even feel like an expansion if when combined, it actually was one? 10 DLC would likely cost more and offer less, though you do get the choice of only having to purchase what you want. An expansion however would be better for marketing.

Also, if they were to start releasing content through the gem store, people would complain about not being able to exchange gold for gems due to the massive spike it would cause. It would likely end up working better for ArenaNet however since the average player would now have to buy gems.

Simply put, it would cause more F2P-style complaints, especially from outsiders, hence the bad image. The store is currently 100% optional. Selling content would make it required. Either way, people are going to complain, but I’d bet on an expansion being better received.

Just because they will announce the expansion today (assuming there is anything) doesn’t mean they will start woking on it today silly. It just means that they have been working on it for a long time and now they will announce it.

+ next time don’t state that you are a new player when you are obviously not.

i too hope for B2P like the gw1 expansions, the “living story” idea pales in comparison to cantha/elona and new classes plus new skills for the existing ones.
GW: Factions especially did so much for the game,
defending fort aspenwood from those cursed luxons is probably the most fun years i’ve spent gaming!

Seems likely that it will be an expansion and earnings forecasts that have been linked on here before suggest a spike in revenue that would indicate that the “expansion” will not be free.

I love how everyone is freaking out since the next content release is named everyone is like “OMG it’s finally an expansion!”.

If anything it’s going to be a mini expansion, good chance free and just be a much larger Living Story update. So don’t hold your breath for new races, new classes, new skills, new weapons and a new large playable map like Factions, Nightfall or even Eye of the North had.

OK – don’t have a hissy fit. Expansion / GW3 / something else. I don’t really care. In my view an expansion is most likely. I may be wrong. I may be right. Either way – I haven’t expressed anything as fact.
