Guild Wars 2

Hey guys. So I am writing a ethnography paper on sub cultures and I decided to pick two different communities from the mmo scene ; Final Fantasy XIV and Guild Wars 2. I have been playing the game for some time, but haven’t really interacted with the community as much as I know some of you guys have. In short, would some of you who have been active in the community in general for a while be willing to answer some of my questions to help with my paper? I’d be happy to answer some questions. As long as I don’t have to buy anything at the end of it I like doing surveys.

Well the rough draft is due on Tuesday, so I’m not sure I can download another game and do that much research in that little amount of time, but I’ll definitely look into it.

Also, do you really think that the communities of GW2 and FFXIV are really that similar?

Having played both GW2 and FFXIV, my experience has been the communities are very similar. The best for me has been GW2. I have found the most helpful people both here on the forums and in game. I only mention EVE Online in case you want to make a more contrasting comparison. I stopped playing that game over six years ago as I found the community there the most toxic of all the MMO’s I have ever played.

If it’s anything like animal behaviour studies comparing two somewhat similar communities may be better than comparing two totally different ones, especially for a student paper because it’s not as straight-forward and therefore harder to do but more likely to highlight relevant points.

You could always put a survey up, like most others doing a paper do. You’d probably get more responses that way.

Ah OK. I wasn’t to sure about the community, but I didn’t hear too many positive things about it initially which is why I gravitated towards ffxiv instead.

If that’s how you’d prefer me to get in touch with you with my questions, that works just fine with me. The only reason I’d prefer to use email, skype or discord is that I can access the answers to my questions people have sent me at any time I want (like from my phone for instance). That would make typing my paper a whole lot easier. Like I said, I can send them over through the in-game mail system if that’s what you’d prefer.

Not a clue lol. To be honest I didn’t even know that site existed until now. Would I be able to see each persons individual answers if I used SurveyMonkey? Its just that right now, sending people emails with my questions has been working out fine so far and I don’t want to venture into something that I’m unfamiliar with when I’ve already got something working.

I don’t know if you can see individual responses or not but it is a commonly used survey on these forums by people gathering information for colllege classes or other reasons. It allows people to answer in the spur of the moment rather than contacting, getting the questions, responding, sending back the answers, etc.

Ah, ok. I see your point. I’ll go ahead and put one together real quick and edit my first post to include it and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice!

Another possibility. Unless the questions and answers are private you could list them on your thread for people to post answers here.

I decided to make a survey using google docs instead, which was much easier. I edited my initial post and added a link to it there. Thanks for your help though! I appreciate it!
