R.I.P Grubbing
You forgot to add “for me” at the end.
Yer supposed to kill the giant, not just farm grubs off of him. That’s borderline exploitative. Its pretty sad that folks took advantage enough for Anet to need to respond by disabling it.
I figure it would have been better if they just drastically reduced the drop rate of those guys, but if that ended up being more complicated to do than it seems, this is probably just a stopgap. Last I checked a number of MMOs (and RPGs in general) don’t give any loot xp gold or anything for killing summoned mobs. At least ANet tries to.

You mean grubb’n’, not grubbing.

It’s still hammering a finishing nail with a sledgehammer.
I don’t particularly appreciate seeing “content has been disabled” when doing the event legitimately (not farming it), when there are hundreds of bots spread across the world, farming events on autopilot, like they’ve been doing for weeks. And even if I was farming grubs, at least I’m present and playing the game, and earning my drops. The anti-farm code would cap it soon enough anyway.
Anything that reduces the attraction for players to mindlessly grind mobs is a plus for me. It’s true, though, that removing loot altogether in situations like this is a bit of overkill, especially when there’s already code in place to prevent farming.
Well although I did this a few times myself I found a little more of a controlled solo way of obtaining the same thing while getting other mats in the process
So I don’t mind this at all. So I will do that until they nerf that as well
You keep using that word, “viable.”
I do not think it means what you think it means.
For those of you who don’t know, grubbing was the practice of using a champion risen giant to spawn risen grubs and killing the grubs which dropped T5/T6 Venoms for crafting. You could keep the giant alive for 20-30 minutes and just kill endless waves of grubs.
It was essentially a event with waves of grubs instead of other enemies. This was really the only way to farm T5/T6 venom drops (well at least for 20 minutes until the anti-farm code kicked in and you got 0 loot)
But apparently Anet decided to remove yet another way to get mats. Upon killing a risen grub you now receive the message:
“This content has been disabled, try again later”
And you get no loot of any kind.
Thank you for removing the last viable way to get high level mats, the game is now 100% grind!
So killing the grubs over and over again wasn’t grinding?
Weird. I never heard of this until today. I guess there is a salesman NPC who thought it was devaluing their supply of grub sacs.
If left alone all I could see is that grub sacs would depreciate in value until people wouldn’t bother farming it anymore.
You forgot to add “for me” at the end.
And forgot to add the words exploitive and/or cheesey.
It’s really amusing when players abuse the hell out of content then whine when it gets fixed.
So is ok for me, someone who didn’t abuse this, to think that all of those exploiters should have the related inventory stripped or to be banned for exploiting?
It’s getting really old seeing things get fixed that people profited from insanely without any negative at all. Not the getting fixed part. The profit insanely via exploiting with zero punishments part.
Side note, why not just alter the loot table for mobs like this so that they drop some gray crap worth a few measely copper instead? Something that isn’t worth farming but is better than a crappy message?
You DO realize that what you described — standing in one place for 20-30 minutes at a time and repeatedly killing the same rapidly-spawning enemies — is basically the very DEFINITION of grinding, right?
Not grinding would be something along the lines of going out into the world and just doing whatever, then using the money gained to buy the venom. And this is what they would prefer that you do, instead of endlessly grinding a world event to artificially generate vast amount of venom, thereby devaluing it.

It was abused and it was an exploit. The point of the giants was to be fought and killed along with the adds they spawned, not to be ignored and have the adds indefinitely killed. What I don’t get is why people are so mad, it’s so obvious why this was done. Sorry but you’re gonna have to farm like everyone else, where there is no endless supply and you have to wait for events and mob spawns.
@Voqar- It is assumed the message is there right now as an obvious temporary fix until they figure out exactly what they want to do here. Problem is whatever they do, if grubs give x, people will still exploit it. they need a way to make these giants less exploitable, forcing them to have to be killed. Perhaps the giant could simply not throw grubs as often, have more powerful attacks, and so on to kill lone players trying to exploit it/do something to make it more of an annoyance if left alive and better to kill off instead. Maybe they could make rogue giants tare camps down if not dealt with, contesting points without events, then events happen causing you to have to face whatever it is throwing at you plus a champion giant. there are a lot of options for them to consider before they fix the problem. A message for now is fine, it does the job.
NOOOO, My grubbies
The penitent DEs were flooded with people and it was getting harder to get a few hits in so I’d go do some grubs for a while.
How are we supposed to gather stuff if they remove the ways of gathering this stuff?
Events are already bugging out after the reset. These were like mini events you could do. Now the real grind will happen.
Once all the events are bugged again, we’ll have to just kill random mobs that spawn on the roads, like last time when the giant bugged, all events except 2 were bugged and all we did was… kill random mobs on the roads.
Can’t they make it into a DE?
I just had an awesome DE idea for cursed shore/orr, ima post it in dynamic events forum.
In a while you get a message that whenever you kill 5 mobs in a row.“Youve killed to many mobs in a short amount of time, please wait 30 minutes before killing the next mob”.This game..is starting to become limited, very…limited.I’m seriously starting to lose interest more and more.

I can so see sub-based mmorpgs doing that. XD

It was an exploit, unlimited, unending, easy to kill mobs, how can that not be an exploit? People were unfairly gaining from this, it needed to be fixed.

How is grinding mobs any different ? If you look at any other mmo, grinding the same mobs over and over to get some maths,is different then killing these grubs..how exactly ?
One more thing ruined thanks to exploiters. Thanks a lot guys.
I never farmed these things, but the few times I did fight a giant in Orr I liked getting the extra loot from the grubs. Well, there goes that…
If only people could be less selfish, the game would be a much better place…

Any other MMO is the point, GW2 doesn’t want that. Again though, this was a specific way to gain an advantage of time with little effort for decent profit, it was an exploit not a grind, there is a difference. Can you not obtain the loot you need simply doing events and fighting your way through the land? Yes, yes you can, it just requires more effort and thats where peoples issues come in, they want it to be as fast and easy as possible.
When there is a place that has mobs ,that do drop specific kind of maths that people need and they drop more often then on normal mobs,i dont see it as an exploit.I see it as people being smart, and they are being punished for it,call it an exploit all you want,i seriously disagree with this.Champion spawns grubss, people kill grubss, dont remove the drops,Reduce the drops, done.
People don’t kill the champion though, they purposefully ignore it to exploit it.
GOD the people on this forum are unbearable!
Seriously?
You were doing something that is the very DEFINITION of the word “grind”!
You were killing the same monsters in the same place over and over and over again for a long period of time to farm their drops.
And when they fixed an EXPLOIT, you come here and cry that the game is just a “grind” now?
This is so stupid I can’t even begin to describe how stupid it is.
I am now, more than ever convinced that the people who complain on these forums are nothing but the crybabies that will cry about anything.
Ohh and btw, you remind me of all those hackers that come to the forums and cry about how they didnt do anything wrong and how they have no idea why they could possibly be banned!
You EXPLOITED something in the game, and now they have fixed it.
Stop crying about it, and thank ArenaNET for not banning yourkitten
I’m really not sure how this could be considered even close to exploiting????
If this is exploiting then so is almost every DE in the game… The giant spawned grubs, the grubs did high damage, you killed them or you died. eventually the giant died as well, the event took 20-30 minutes. Replace Giant and Grub with Base and “creature” and you’ve effectively just called the entire DE system an exploit lol.
I guess people are upset that they didn’t know where to farm and now the spot is gone.
The more Anet nerfs and tries to kill farming the harder players will look for farming spots. If you are going to require 500+ items for something and you keep nerfing the drop rate down to 1-2 an hour then people will just look for another place to farm.
If they do manage to nerf ALL the farming spots then people will just leave because the effort isn’t worth it anymore.
Of course by the logic of the people here it seems that they should prevent all mobs from dropping loot because apparently getting loot is an exploit.
“You could keep the giant alive for 20-30 minutes and just kill endless waves of grubs.”
There’s the exploit. You’re not supposed to keep the giant alive, you’re supposed to kill it.
Good riddance.

Again, like I said before, you just sound like another hacker or an exploiter that comes to the forum trying to sound innocent, like you had no idea that it was an exploit.
Ohh and nice try with that false equivalency there.
You compare a finite waves of monsters that you kill in order to complete the event, to an infinite wave of monsters that don’t stop spawning as long as you don’t kill main boss.
Sorry buddy, you are just going to have to admit that there is NO way to spin this situation to make it seem less of an exploit.
But I will admit you are pretty good at it, perhaps there is a job at FOX that you can apply for.
I don’t particularly appreciate seeing “content has been disabled”
…ever. Seeing this message in the middle of a fight is just inelegant. The popup should be removed.
OP kept giants alive to kill endless waves of grubs.
Complains that in the absence of this, the game is now too grindy.
In related news, I have a headache.
So that explains those weird messages while I’m in Orr. Just got there and was doing an event and kept getting that disabled message. I thought maybe it was a bug. I did find the giant you are talking about. You DO have to kill the grubs he spawns though or they will kill you. I ended up not being able to kill him because there were only a few people around and he knocked us out pretty quick. Do you get anything beyond the normal Karma award for completing the event? It’s rather frustrating to do events if they plan on blocking all the drops off the spawns. : |

There seems to be some confusion as to he meaning of exploit. When you are exploiting something, all that is meant is that you are making the best use of what is available to you. Farming Mobs, Dynamic Events, using the Trading Post are all exploits.
So the issue is not whether you are exploiting or not; because clearly you are. No, the real question is whether this exploitation, in particular, is fair game, and ultimately, ArenaNet has decided that this is not a proper way to go about gaining mats, whether you like it or not.

Exactly my experience last night. I had no idea about the exploit, but that “content disabled” popup was distracting and clumsy, and it made the game seem unfinished.
I understand the need to plug exploits (yes, OP is silly). But it should be done if possible in a way that’s invisible to other players – rather than giving us the impression that something in the game is broken.
It’s an exploit because it was not meant to work like that. They expected players to kill the giant as well not EXPLOIT a game mechanic and keep it a live for infinite loot.

Have you ever listened to Lewis Black?
‘If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college.’
I’m wondering why ANet hasn’t put the kind of loot scaling they had in GW1. Back then, if you farmed in the same area over and over, the drop rate of things would fall of so drastically, that you barely got any thing else but trophies after 3 or 4 farming runs.
If you are gaining more gold/karma/token/badges than someone who is playing through the content normally than its an exploit. Its simple. Anet wants people who do content for the contents sake and at a normal pace to get the best rewards, not some grind one spot over and over non-sense.
I’ve crafted full exotic set by playing normally for a week and a half. Its possible, but people will always look for short cuts and Anet will close those short cuts.
An exploit is an exploit i have not had this happen and understand that exploits need to be fixed but couldnt anet have just nerfed the loot drops on the worms rather than display a message like that?
Its just wrong..
Amateur hour at arenanet?
This game is going the way of diablo 3 and that is permanently off my hard drive very soon..

I honestly do not understand why some of you kids even play MMO’s anymore. A company should make a game just for people like you.
Already Max Level
Already all the best Items
All Bank/Bag Space Opened and Filled with the best Bags
You don’t have to ever Farm anything as you can place an order for it, with the Gold you recieve Daily in the sum of <You wont be able to spend it all if you tried>
The game would be cheap as there would be no need for Content, after all, you’ve already cleared that Content before your character was even made. You have all the gear from all the hardest raids. Welcome to your glorified chat room.
A Game like I described would be an awesome addition to those who feel like they shouldn’t have to “work” for anything in a MMO.
Loathe WoW and the Community it brings.
Man I really just don’t understand you people… are you seriously trying to tell me that because I found a legitimate game design that gave slightly more of a certain mat then doing something else that this is an exploit????
The giant awards no loot, no coin and no karma, why in the world would I spend 30 minutes to kill it? The reward was clearly designed to be the loot you got from killing the grubs. They are no easier then running around killing any other mob in Orr, they just have a set spawn rate and dropped a particular item I wanted.
By your logic:
If I choose to do a DE more then once because it has a nice reward I am exploiting….
If I choose to farm any mob anywhere and it respawns then I am exploiting…
What exactly am I allowed to do that wouldn’t be exploiting?
What about the people who let the Grenth event fail so they can retake the temple? are they “exploiting” because they didn’t try hard enough?
Yeah clearly it was a “legitimate game design.” That’s why they removed it. Your propensity for hyperbole and missing the point is just becoming an irritation.
So, ArenaNet removed your method of grinding for a certain mat, and as a result, the game now has more grind?

Yes, thats clearly “gaming” the system. I don’t think they will nerf things like that, but I wouldn’t play with people who did it. Its the same as Keep trading in WvW.
By your logic:

Careful on that slope, man.
It looks slippery.
It is not a legitimate game design, which is obviously why it is removed right now. As intended you would fight THE GIANT while killing adds and take it down. I could swear it is a mini event as well, giving some silver and karma or something in addition to whatever the grubs give you. You choose not to kill it though, bypassing and abusing what was intended and it is ruined for everyone because of it, all grubs everywhere, thanks to people who exploited.
I see people keep cropping up with “this text is a terrible solution” its not a solution, its a bit of duct tape for the moment until the get the right piece to make it work right. It wont be there forever, just for a moment, its not a big deal.
There seems to be some confusion as to he meaning of exploit. When you are exploiting something, all that is meant is that you are making the best use of what is available to you. Farming Mobs, Dynamic Events, using the Trading Post are all exploits.

read this post OP; you ARE exploiting the game.
99% of posters here don’t understand exploit to have that meaning. They believe exploit = cheat.
Exploitation is not cheating but it’s equally bad and I’m glad Anet is taking care of it.
In some really old games with battle screens I remember mobs that would multiply (usually has same HP, not max unless he multiplied at max HP but current HP) and after a few hits kill the other mobs, defend until multiply, kill clone, rinse, and repeat for experience =( Final Fantasy IV also had something like this for dolls. I didn’t consider that “cheating” because I didn’t use a Game Shark to do it.
99% of posters here don’t understand exploit to have that meaning. They believe exploit = cheat.
I understand that, but my overall point was not so much to engage in semantics, but to keep the OP on track. He’s so absorbed, misguidedly I might add, on proving that he’s not exploiting the game that he’s missing the entire point: that ArenaNet has not deemed this method as proper.
If he/she wants to suggest methods or perhaps argue why this is a wrong choice or perhaps dive into some other issue, like how ArenaNets actions are undermining their no-grind-philosophy (I do not, by mentioning this view, say that I hold it. I am merely giving examples); this post might actually become fruitful. But until he realizes that he is exploiting, I don’t think he’ll ever actually begin to discuss anything worthwhile.
