RL rich = ingame Rich and vice-versa
So you want to pay monthly fees for GW2?
Actually, I wouldn’t mind. I hate the freemium model quite a bit.
lucky you, a person with enough money to not to care that you might only use the product so much a month and still be able to just throw a certain amount away monthly without a second thought.
Also freemium indicates that by paying the fee you have an advantage. One that bought lots of gems has no advantage over me though.Nope, they have absolutely no advantage over you. They can’t simply buy gems, sell them for in-game gold, or use them to purchase things that will somehow net them in-game gold. Totally can’t. This post does not reek of sarcasm.
Anyway, I don’t really “throw away money” at all. If I paid monthly for something, I would also want to use it an amount that befits the money I’m using on it. FYI, after you get a job you’ll realize that 15 dollars a month for something that you enjoy is really almost trash. You’re talking 180 dollars a year. And as a bonus, you tend to get better customer service and everything, which is the main part of the freemium model that is seriously lacking. People are like “oh you don’t HAVE to pay to keep playing this and kittenlololo”, so naturally they treat the developers like they’re giving players out candy for nothing, and so no one should expect anything of the developers. Which is total bs, really. But hey whatever. I can’t make people less stupid.
With subscription models at least everything that you can obtain in the game… is obtained via means in the game. This is what I miss about it.
1. surviving off minimal wage in UK here. Rent, food and taxes take priority. I’m unable to play WoW for example. I don’t have 15 dollars a month to spare.
2. freemium is premium content in f2p games. It does normally refer to items that give unfair advantage.
3. what about items that subscription MMOs sell? You seem to be okay with those. What about all those MMOs with a subscription fee that does not give you free content like Guild Wars 2, but instead releases an expansion pack every year which if you won’t buy you will be behind everyone? What about all those bots they don’t block because they’re paying subscription fee and that’s free money?
Fun is subjective and different for literally everyone. While people can spend thousands on the gem store to get legendaries, that is what they would call fun, possibly because they’re working so hard they don’t have the time to make their own but do have the real money to spend to get one. This would mean that every time they log on they can enjoy it more.
There are so many reasons why people with money would spend real life money to aid their game play especially if they can afford it. Hell, I’m not rich but I’ve bought some things with real money – it’s not expensive and makes your character look good, which is half of the reason I play RPG games.
If you’re rich in real life and want to buy your way to the best you should have that right seeing as the options there, without the gemstore the game wouldn’t be as accessible for a lot of people because of a constant subscription fee. People really need to stop complaining or find a new game, there are a lot of subscription games out there which have what you’re looking for.
On a side note – RMT ring a bell? If you’re looking to be the best in any MMORPG I’m sorry, it will never happen. No matter whether a game has a store or not there will always be ways for rich people to gain an edge over the competition. It’s actually much better in GW2 than it is in subscription MMO’s because spending real money for GW only effects visual and not so much stats unlike other games.
you know just assuming that they’re wasting their parents money is kind of well mean.
Yeah, someone forgot that the average MMO gamer is around 27 years old. And you don’t have to be rich to throw $50 or $100 in gems at the game every payday. That will get you a lot of gold, and is less than people spend on a date night…
Most people here seem to forget that a tank of diesel costs 60 euros nowadays. And that’s a weekly cost… Trust me, I hate putting diesel in my car, it really hurts every time. On the other hand I love paying for gems.
I’m 26, live with my fiancée who’s currently dependent on me for support. And yet I manage to put almost 1k in my savings account every month. Now someone tell me that gems are expensive …

I don’t see a problem with RL money = In-game money with this game. There’s no advantage others can have over you by buying Gems and converting to gold. You can fully spec your character within a few weeks of hitting 80 if you start from scratch. Ascended items aren’t a problem either because they’re time gated by either daily fractals or laurel/guild commendation acquisition. The only item I see people getting easier with money is ascended back-pieces which only provides a minuscule advantage over the exo pieces so even that doesn’t really matter.
As for your complaint: “To put it short, if you are rich or earn money easily in real life you are rich and cool looking in the game too, but if you are poor and you don’t earn the money so easily, you are the same low lifer in the game too.”
I think people are just lazy. I earned the gold for my T3 cultural and I’m in the process of earning gold for Corrupted revolver and Destroyer Dagger. I have numerous exotics and rare dyes. I’ve blown upwards of 100g on runes, sigils, and trinkets but do you know what I have above all that? Motivation. You don’t have to be rich to have cool stuff in-game. If you don’t have the real life money to get cool things, then you just have to be a little bit less lazy than others.
No offense but all I see is classic QQ about rich people. There is NO pay-to-win in this game, the items you buy with real money do NOT give them an advantage over you in WvW. It’s only pay-to-look-cooler, and that’s the best kind there is but you can still reach the same level of epicness without buying gems, you just have to put your nose to the grinder and stop crying.
It’s like saying you hate the cinema because other people can afford the popcorn and drinks and you can’t. Last I checked, you go to the movies to watch the kitten movie, not eat the food. The food’s just extra.

typical leftist broken argument: No, it were only “not fair” if “rich” people would get stuff only for their quality of being rich, while in reality, they get more because they pay more. “poor” players don´t get less because they are “poor”, but because they pay less. Also, most well-to-do people are partially that because they do not throw away money according to every whim. Lastly, noone keeps you from qualifying for a higher real life income, if you want to have more money to spend on a game, well, go and get it.
There is an equation. Time = Money. Usually rich have less time, they work hard and more. I work hard and more than most of my guild mates, but I have less time.
So while younger people and students for example play the whole day (no offence, I was a student as well :-)), I have no time to play and farm for gold.
Now, I have less time, but I can easily afford gems. I have no problems to spend €50 for 4000 Gems. I bougth them for character slots, bank tabs, backpacks, boosters and some germs I turned into gold.

well you see not all countries have open job places even. At this point to even HAVE a job is lucky.

Depends on what you expect from your job. There’s not many free jobs that are easy and/or clean. However McDonald’s is always hiring, farmhands are very well paid and technicians of all kinds are the best paid people in the world. It just depends on whether you’re willing to get your hands dirty. I didn’t even look for my current job, I was found by my employer.
And if there’s no job for you, you make it. Become an entrepreneur.

Well then, since you’re unemployed you have time to farm gold. Problem solved.
Hello everyone,
this is turning into a discussion about real life social status, which isn’t related to Guild Wars 2 anymore. Please return to the topic Guild Wars 2 again, thank you.

well when you apply to such places most of them will reply that you’re over qualified. When it comes to opening your own business, it requires some starting funds and then it’s very risky. My cousin’s family recently became homeless because of the risks their father took. Now both children in the family will never be able to finish a university or a college even, are forced to live in one room with 5 people and are currently working in a factory just to repay their father’s debt.
Life doesn’t always turn out the way you want it to and I don’t think that it’s fair to say “Lastly, noone keeps you from qualifying for a higher real life income” to people that are living in less fortunate conditions, mostly because a lot of the times they do have complications that keep them from getting less poor. I’m not a communist lol, I don’t think that everyone should get equal pay, I’m just saying that these words can sound ignorant at times

When I signed for my current job, not only did I feel like jumping out of an airplane, I also felt like taking of the parachute for good measure. I moved countries, learned an new language and left friends and family behind. It was a big risk, and it paid of.
I can’t stand people who comfortably stay at home and cry about a lack of jobs. Jobs are for the taking, as long as you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone. That’s the last I’m saying about it, before this thread gets closed …
To make it full circle. Find a nice job, which leads to the ability to comfortably buy gems. Ten euros isn’t much money.

an emigrant here myself. Lithuania has no jobs. UK thinks that we’re overqualified. Don’t have money to try a different country. All I’m saying don’t judge still a decent person here, still living off the money that we do have, however some sacrifices are made. For example I can only wash half my laundry today, because there’s not enough money for the other half. Hell, at least I’m not starving!
Back to the topic at hand here:
I think the disparity between those seen as “rich” in-game and those who are not has more to do with their play style than their income.
It would be easy for me to “buy my way” to looking uber, however, it’s not my thing. I would prefer to “earn” everything in-game. I don’t mean I am going to start running CoF SC’s non-stop. I mean that if I want something, I am going to farm/play until I gain enough gold to purchase enough gems to buy what I want.
The only real problem with this plan is that I can buy 200 gems for [X] gold now, but when I actually get enough gold to buy it, the price per 200 has gone up to [X x2]. The inflation rate is slow-ish, but steady, making me seriously think about buying my gems rather than earning them.
That’s when the game becomes un-fun. I hope that at some point, ANet looks at the exchange rate and makes up its mind that happy people are more important than their wallets… however, I don’t think they will do that any more than I think the passenger pigeon will come back from extinction.
I don’t see the problem here. So someone is able to spend more money on the game than you are. How is this a problem? lol
