I am sorry, but I just have to ask, how can You (Anet) even consider your current RNG as a working one, when you can have 1 person in the course of 1 year to get 20 precursors, and yet 10 000 ppl to have non. How can there be hundreds of ppl killing Tequatl the Sunless, withouth getting a single ascended chest, and at the same time 1 person, killing Tequatl for 1 month to get 3 of his special skin weapon boxes. How can ppl run Fractals at highest levels on a daily basis only to end up with a Ring at best, and at the same time someone casually doing lvl 20ish to get a skin or ascended weapon just like that…
Puzzels me every time i log in and find stuffs like that.
p.s. I do have a friend with 20 precursors, and a friend who got 3 Tequatl weapons boxes, 2 of wich in 2 weeks, and another 400 in a guild that have nothing of sort… so those are real examples…

I’ve finaly started working on a Legendery, I’m thinking The Flameseeker Propherces, as i really like the skin, but my go to weapon it the Great sword, but the prices on Dawn and Dusk are freaking nuts. They are 3 times the amount of The Chosen. I have no problem, with people selling them, but really, there is nothing Legendery about buying it from the TP.

everything you just said is EXACTLY how this “rng” as u like to call it, is supposed to work, its RANDOM and RANDOM means that you get things RANDOMLY based on statistics, can one person get 20 pre cursors in a year? its possible, its unlikely but possible, i got 3 exotics in a row today from 3 champion boxes? likely to happen? no, possible? yes . thats how its supposed to work, statistics dont gaurantee things will happen, they simply say they can happen and might happen at this time. your complaint is founded on nothing more than a lack of understanding for statistics

Firstly, that’s pretty much how RNG works, though it’s worth remembering that the extremes (multiple pre-cursors, zero-rares for a month, et cetera) are more likely to be brought up (bragging, complaining, atypical anecdotes treated as normal, et cetera) than all the people that are getting expected RNG results. Secondly, it’s worth considering that not all players have the same play experience, and that does affect drops, in some ways. Raw kills, magic find, and type of kill (champ, world boss, or regular mob) all affect the loot a player can expect to receive.

I can see people still don’t understand randomness and how these games systems never use randomness in their loot tables.

Sorry but every game out there has some form of bias in the numbers, every single game, it’s never been a completely random system there is both bias and tweaks they use all the time. Buuuuuut people will continue to just walk around in a herd chewing….

Yeah, if the Guildwars currency system would apply to the real world, your paycheck would be RNG based. But guess what, you could sell your paycheck to a store for a set amount of money and at this store you can buy all the stuff you need to live. Without RNG, just way more expensive.

People farm dungeons that gives a fixed amount of gold, champion/karma trains gives a steady amount of gold and any lucky drops in both examples are just a plus, you can do both w/o never getting an exotic/asc and still have gold enough to buy whatever you need.

The paycheck reference would be like dungeon/world boss/guild mission guaranteed rewards, you can do them (like a job IRL) and be sure that you’ll get a minimum amount of gold and the lucky drops would be the lottery, if you win lucky you, if don’t try next time, at least you have your paycheck.

i totally agree with op.
that is why people asked for precursor crafting at least a year ago and still nothing, i do not understand the RNG reward system anyways.
is it helping gem store?those boxes maybe but they do not have pre in it as far as i know.
is it good reward system for players? well if it was the pre crafting was not one of the most wanted feature in the game.
and with inflation the dusk i bought for 900g is 1200g now i would have grind for one more month if i wanted to buy it today.
the pre crafting is way better you at least grind toward certain goal rather than you grind gold but inflation cause the same pre rise in price so you have to grind even more.

The funny part is that getting items via RNG is actually considered by ANet to be a viable way of acquiring them.

It’s obvious that Anet considers it a VALID way to obtain them but you are intentionally overstating the situation (by using the word ‘viable’) and truely have know way to actually KNOW what “Anet” considers viable or not. If you are going to use this thread to bash Anet, at least put on your tin-foil hat and prance around chanting about the super-secret hidden luck stat each character or account has…..

RNG in this game is a little outside of reason. I have thousands of play hours. I never played low level content, ever. I bought the game got in a good karma train and just sat in it and ate XP boosters the whole time, 1-80 in a sitting on my first character. If I’m in game I’m farming something that has ascended and precursor drop chance. It’s just how I like to play. Problem is for all my effort, nothing. My sister bought the game 2 weeks ago and I helped PL her to 80 very fast and she got ascended staff as a drop in a scale 1 fractal on her second attempt. And I see that constantly, people get nice stuff with little effort all around me. Every other fractal someone’s getting this or that. I’m pretty sure Anet has adaptive RNG that gives people who play a lot garbage loot and people who play 4 hours a week get the good stuff. For it to actually be possible for me to never have seen a drop of any kind but also have realistcally 20% of groups I run have at least 1 decent drop, either there’s some very broken code that bars certain accounts from getting items or there’s very malicious code on Anet’s end towards farmers. There’s no way in hell this game has actual RNG. It’s more likely for Stalin to come back from the dead and show up in a twerking club in Brazil wearing short shorts than what I’ve seen is actual RNG.

I’ve been saying this from very early on. RNG in a game is just a code. Code can be bugged, broken, tweaked, and openly modified. The code for drops has been modified several times in this games life span. You cannot tell me that through all these modifications that something didn’t go wrong. RNG in a game is just a way that game designers can emulate “Luck”. If everyone had the same RNG variables then we would all have the same chance at getting something. However in order to emulate rarity of items you don’t want everyone getting these things. The easiest way to do this is through variables in the RNG code.

If this was a true RNG then anyone who has played for an extensive period of time would have at least gotten something from that rare list. That is the way probability works. You can’t possibly tell me that after several years of rolling a d100 that you are never going to get a 1 or a 100. To that effect you can’t say that you will only get a 1 or a 100 either. It is not an accurate representation of probability. Yet in this game we have both sides of that. Some who never get close to either end of the spectrum and some that live on that outer edge.

The things is, statistically, it IS possible to roll a D100 for years and never get a 1 or 100.
RNG is the same for everyone, most languages I know a randomize command usually return a number between 0 and 1 and you can do what ever you want with that number.

I agree that we should get someway, besides TP, to acquire a precursor that doesn’t rely on RNG, but the RNG is working as intended … randomly.

No, not excited. Over kittening joyed. When I’m drowning in a Sea of blue and greens, getting a rare or exotic is cause for celebration. Now I have 80% magic find I get on average 1 rare a day, if I don’t do a temple or world boss. So I guess it’s not too bad for a few hours of game play. But I’ve gone weeks at a time of having nothing but blues and greens, again unless I do a boss or temple. So yes RNG is kitten, but it’s in every game where you can get gear.

I’d just rather an epic quest line to get a precursor. And by epic, I do mean Epic! One that takes months to do. So you can feel truly legendary.

Anet has overdone it with RNG. For most things it’s either :
-get lucky and get some extremely rare and valuable drop
-get unlucky and get kitten.

Nothing in between. Gauntlet chances are one of the “best” example I can think of.

And then you have the “hey lucky ! oh woops now that you hit the correct number, you haven’t hit the one you wanted” feeling everyone who :
-got an ascended box after 900 WvW chest but it wasn’t the stat you wanted
-got Venom or The Bard
-a fractal speargun after 70 fractal 20+ runs

I think something people often forget when they discuss RNG is the type of content players do. For instance, PvP players have relatively small sample size of loot, so a good drop is probably more unlikely than for a PvE player (though I believe they are affected by MF, so that changes things somewhat). Players who consider the world bosses to be a primary/major source of income (non-dungeon/fractal PvEers) have guaranteed rares + other drops, which may feel like a good chance at exotics or other good drops, but other than some consistency and a handful of champ bags from some of the events, doing that is fairly lackluster. WvW has the potential to give enough drops/bags that I would expect a player to get some nicer drops, but is very dependent on success, what you are doing, and a million other things.

The Random Number Gods are nothing if not predictable.

My main issue with RNG is that it is ok as long as there is a non rng method of obtaining the item. Even with precursors, you can run dungeons for guaranteed or low risk rewards over a period of time and be able to buy them off the TP. IMO this is fair.
What is unfair is items that have no other method to be obtained other than RNG. These are the account bound RNG items. Currently I can think of 3 main items that fall under this group. I believe a non RNG method should exist to get them, the simpliest is just to remove the account bound and allow them to be sold on the trading post. Or maybe as a pve version of the reward tracks, where you get the items guaranteed if you do the activity for the item 30 times, but it can only progress only once per day(so 30 days of trying to hit the rng jackpot before then just giving you a pitty reward). These items are:
Mega Boss Skins from teq and wurm
Fractal weapons/tonic
Dungeons end boss recipees
These items need a non RNG method, similarly how fractal rings used to have only a rng method until they added the Pristine fractal relics.

Maybe If your expectation is to high and you expect precursor to drop. Just play the game and take your loot. Once you will get lucky and If not, you can buy it with gold which you earn. Or If you want some big road how to make weapon by yourself, you can try foefire’s essence.
