Q:
Race Change.
It’s cheaper to just buy another character slot.
And the game-wide bugs caused by ‘resetting the Personal Story’? Last time they tried just changing the order a bit caused so much to go wrong.
Birthdays are another very big deal, When someone has a Character that is 4 years old or even 1 year old, It makes Re rolling feel pointless, If you made a new character, And didn’t mind needing to re level all crafting and 100% map completion again, You still have to keep in mind, Your character is now going to be years behind in the game, And all of the really cool Birthday gifts you will be getting? You now need to wait even longer to get.

There have been numerous threads on the topic and the discussion always is the same. Proponents always insist that this should be easy and critics point out that ANet has said it’s not.
The short story is that it’s just really hard to reset a character at all, never mind its race. That makes it a bad option on which to spend resources, since there are other things that people also want competing for dev attention.

Are you volunteering to level up that new character, gear him, do world exploration and give him birthday presents?

I’m not saying it’s hard or not, but Anet had quite a few pretty lame excuses in the past for various things. “Can’t seperate PvE skills from PvP, because we don’t want to confuse people” is just one example.

They aren’t saying race change would be confusing or bad for players; they are saying that it’s a lot of work without much benefit.

Good job putting things out of context

Some things, yes they have had some majorly lame excuses.
As a dev myself, i do not even have to look at the code to understand that, you want them to pull out a list of everything that they have to store on their server pertaining to race, personal story choices which involve races and probably other things that we might not even know.
Then you want them to make a UI which allows you to rechoose every single choice for your new race up to the point that you currently are. Oh, and they will want to make sure to continue to store these values just incase they want to reference them for future updates, living world or other xpacks, and if they miss one… you could end up seeing your wish to join the circus suddenly pop up while playing your honorbound charr.
Either that, or they would have to send your character back to the VERY BEGINING of all the stories.
either way…. its just not worthwhile.

I’ll take sending my character back to very begining, no problem. How do you know that’s not worthwhile? You seriously think that people would not buy race change contract, while they buy total make over kits regularly and even useless stuff like minis? How could you possibly know how many people would buy this?
Again, I’m not saying it’s hard or not, because I don’t know, but let’s go for the second option, let’s avoid all the possibilities, decisions, UI designs etc.. and just restart the story. Now, that could be simple. If it is, then how it’s not worthwile? How is it not worth to charge, lets say 1000 gems for resetting someone’s story?

Doing nothing but reseting story and charging 1000 gems for it is not worth it? Ok.
