Nothing wrong with discussing it. It’s just something to talk about, after all A-net really sticks to what they said! Kind of like how they did with the release of FoTM and ascended gear (sarcasm and joking here).

Because that’s what pointless means? This isn’t something like vertical progression or Anet sticking to what they say. This isn’t feasible on the technical side of things so they aren’t changing thier minds on it. It doesn’t matter if they would change their minds because it still wouldn’t be feasible. Reset personal story to zero when race is changed.

Doing so is the same as making the personal story replayable. Bobby Stein had already stated that they’ve tried various forms of making the PS replayable or resetable but they all result in numerous bugs where it would take more effort to fix the bugs than it would be worth.

So that’s out of the question. Not so much from a choice but what’s possible to do. They’d have to remake the personal story from the ground up to allow it to be replayable and even that isn’t guaranteed to work. Resetting would be no different.

Anet has stated on multiple occasions that, “nothing is off the table.” There is no harm in talking about something, even if it is unlikely to ever come to pass.

I agree with this, but A-net have said that it is almost certainly never going to happen.

Although discussion is fun and good, I have come across people wanting/demanding this feature who are waiting and expecting it to become realised. They don’t make a new character because of this and ultimately, they’re shooting themselves in the foot because of false hopes, misinformation and the fact that one of these threads pops up every week.

2) Personal story arc 1 change to “You are a RACE_NEW raised by RACE_ORIGINAL as one of them”. even if you race change 10 times, original race is the same. The personal story does not change otherwise. What’s done is done.
3) All race armor in inventory or equipped for the old race become accountbound, soulbound on equip. Its still limited to race, you dont get new race gear.
4) New race is processed just like the total makeover kit, you select your race and then it goes to total makeover kit menu.

I can take a good guess at which part got you infracted last time (in your deleted post) as myself and another poster commented in relation to it.

Anyway, I think Ashen (at least I think it was?) also responded to you and I really liked their response in regards to this “fix” you have planned out.

Basically, Ashen explained that A-net had plans for character customisation from the start of development. Throughout development, A-net made sure that aesthetic variables were maintained easily accessible in the code so that it wouldn’t be a problem to drop in make-over kits, hair-style kits and the like.

Race (and thus all connected variables) was never planned to be changeable, therefore everything is very much spiderweb-like; it would be difficult to pick apart to isolate it. If they change one thing, it will likely be a domino effect and bug out many aspects of the game and be very lengthy to fix.

Lots of posters and reviewers joke that GW2’s code is like spaghetti in the sense that they might fix or update one thing and end up also affecting something entirely different. Pull one piece of spaghetti and everything else moves with it. It certainly can make patch days a little interesting!

I’d like to point out (once again) that the technical aspect of the problem is just one of the obstacles in the way of this ever being a thing. You still need to counter A-net’s attitude towards an item of this nature (in the sense that it cheapens character development and reduces the impact of your character’s decisions). Also, I’m pretty sure that selling character slots is more profitable overall.

the issue can be summed up rather easily.

there are certain things, like personal story progress and level-up rewards, that are saved directly into your character’s save file.

in order to change race, profession, reset personal story, etc… information would have to be removed from your save file. this would create conflicts with code that would essentially break your character.

for example. the code sees that you tripped flag x, and since you tripped flag x, there is supposed to be certain info in your save file. since the info was removed from your save file, the code can’t find the info it’s looking for, and then it generates error code after error code after error code. eventually, using that same save file, you get stuck in an infinite load screen, because there are too many errors

it’s the same thing that happens when you mod skyrim, save your game, and then remove mods, and try using the same save game. it may not break your game right away, but inevitably, it will break it beyond repair. and your save faile is broken to the point of an infinite load screen, there is only one thing to do: delete the save file (and all character progress) and start over from character creation.

Decent logic, but GW2 is an MMO, not a singleplayer game. Its much simpler.

Except the personal story, the game doesnt take into account your race, gender, what you did previously, etc. For example, all races have access to all home instances. Yep, if you are Charr you can go into the Norn home instance. That’s your home instance just as good as the Human home instance, or the Asuran one. The game doesnt care that you are Charr. Its the same home instance.

The same with the makeover kit. You can change genders how much you want. The game doesnt care. Even armor will properly change after you have changed genders.

If it was that easy, it would of happened. There are clearly things we do not know about that make it impossible.

Because rerolling would totally solve all my problems. As it stands I am tired of looking at my Asuran Necro and wouldn’t mind rolling a different race. I honestly don’t care about the personal story all that much, so if it were to change what would I care? I just don’t want to have to re-max out my professions, recraft full ascended armor, wait to accumulate all the laurels i need for full ascended accessories and then either recraft 4 legendaries, or make ascended weapons (not as awesome because you can’t stat swap on the fly.) So what’s wrong with paying like 2000 gems or whatever and being able to swap to a new race?

All of those things apart from the crafts themselves are account bound…

If crafting was account bound, this race change thing wouldn’t be an issue. People would just reroll like they can already ingame.

Account bound crafting should be far easier to implement than race change.

Don’t delete that char. Leave him at the crafting table for whenever you need him.

So, what’s wrong with paying 800 gems for a new character slot, leveling to 80 with tomes and writs and swapping over all ascended armor, trinkets and Legendaries to the new char?

It’s what I did. I bought a character slot and made a brand new necro of a different race. Of course at that time there were no tomes or writs so I had to level her the old way.

Honestly I think it’s just for the sake of being lazy. (which honestly I don’t mind)

I played my necro 846 days… and I really want to make her a norn, so how can I left my main? She must be the best – get all dungs story, maps, crafts and everything. I dont want a NEW char a want my main but in the other race.

Wont happen. Anet has stated that your character’s race and profession are HARDCODED VALUES. Want to change either of those? It’s going to involve the deletion of your character. There is no snazzy coding magic anet can do to change that.

There is no such thing as a hardcoded value in a database created from nothing, ie character creation. Maybe they wont change it, but something that is hardcoded is always there from the start. Race isnt. Nothing about your character is.

Even with the assumption that its “hardcoded”, worst case scenario they can migrate old character data to a new character which can be any race. In the migration process you only take what you need (gear, inventory, profession, traits, story, etcetc), which obviously doesnt include race.

The race value not being changeable isnt the slightest problem to race changing.
