Raids and housing coming to GW2!
ok so from what i gathered from the google translated version they intend on making guild “cities”? I just hope they dont use the same model they did with the custom arenas where you have to buy time tokens from the gem store, pretty sure thats how it will be though.
I actually believe something was said about there being guild cities and expanded “guild halls” a couple of years prior to launch. I’ll try to find the article later tonight, but I definitely remember hearing that.
The raiding thing makes me very curious.
I don’t understand how they are going to make large raids interesting in a game that doesn’t have tanks and aggro mechanics. You can’t really make large raid encounters interesting without any kind of control or structure.
I’m not saying that raids can’t work for Guild Wars 2, I just don’t understand how they’re going to make it work without letting every boss encounter degenerate into “zergs” with a couple of red circles to dodge and where there’s no point to have anyone that isn’t in berserker gear.
I’m very interested.
i mean you could have a huge WvW like area that is filled with houses only. would be cool actually. gives you something to do besides kill things

And I fail to see how having a tank hold the boss in one place is interesting.
I mean you may as well dig a hole and put the boss in it and let everyone “do their rotation” for all the interest a tank brings.
I bet all the furniture will be ONLY available from gem store, pass no thanks, brah. Never raided in any game so i’ll try that and hopefully it’ll be fun for more than 2-3 runs.
I wouldnt mind if the furniture was only avial in gem store. cosmetic, gemstore..as it should be.
what I dont want are gates to content. They’ve walked a fine line thus far, and wavered a bit with guild missions. Lets see how they do with this.
Make or break for me.
Furniture is NOT only cosmetic, it’s part of the game so do not belong in the gem-store. This is a B2P game remember. They are supposed to make the money with the sales of the games and expansions. Not the gem-store. But for some extra money they can put some special looking chairs and stuff in there. That would mate is a special skin for the furniture and that would be oke. Just a few area’s in the current maps and many area’s in some new maps. In that way it is part of the big world. Much more fun an you will have more activity on the maps. If it’s not part of the normals maps it all become such separate parts. Just like WvW is now. I do like WvW but I would have preferred if it in one way was more part of the normal map. It’s now just like a separate game.

But it would be interesting is they required all classes. I think it was a good idea from ArenaNet to stop with the holy trinity but it failed because you do not need everything ending up in we need warriors and guardians all full berserker and less tactics. They have to focus on in stead of only needing a healer, a tank and dps on having more professions in stead of not requiring any. So you need the skills of a thief, and a ranger and a necro and so on.. now with 5 man dungeons that is a problem that is hard but with a raid instance they can introduce that. You need at least 2 of all professions to really be able to do the dungeon because they all have something you need.

I hope they add housing but without a crafted economy I worry about how much content it will add to the game.

Who said they’re not supposed to make money in the gem store. Where did you get that idea?
If they were only cosmetic that wouldn’t really be an issue.
If I liked and wanted that cosmetic then I would want it to be attainable in a way that wasn’t completely unenjoyable for me.
So, I reiterate- it will only be a problem for me if the items are only available via raiding. As long as they are available anywhere else as well, I can’t see there being any issue.
The issue with it being available everywhere else is that people like me won’t find any meaning in it if you can obtain it without raiding.
You’re saying that I should be able to obtain Arah gear by means not in the manner of which entail actually doing Arah itself if I so choose.
That’s goofy.
If I do the Super Ninja Jet Bomber raid, I want people to look at the Giant hexabarrel 800mm cannon that I got from that and say “Man he must have trudged through thousands of 400 ft tall Man Eating Bee’s to get that thing”
And I’m not saying I want more powerful gear, but not having specialized gear even if it’s just cosmetic, is a bad thing.
meh
I don’t care for raids at all, that is why I’m here.
I have no problem with raids rewarding cosmetic awards but the moment you add stats to it, the midden will hit the fan and there will be a reckoning with a huge amount of the players.
Remember, remember the 15th of November..
As for Guild housing- I realize many many people want this and that is great for them- for me not so much.
Personally, I want personal housing with a craft system tied to it.
I would kill for this.

Completely and totally THIS. The raid thing can work if the rewards are not material to finishing the game/playing the content/being included in groups (who wants the GS nightmare repeated here?).
But personal housing with crafting? OH PLEASE YES I’LL EVEN BEG OKAY
And I fail to see how having a tank hold the boss in one place is interesting.

Who said anything about holding a boss in a corner and zerging it? In fact this game doesn’t have tanks and of all MMOs I’ve played (I’ve played a lot) it’s easily the one that is the most guilty of having zergs encounters in its endgame PvE.
Obviously, if you put tanks to hold aggro and leave the encounters as they are it’s going to be worse. Instead of having a chaotic fight you’ll have a boring fight…
The reason why having tanks and aggro mechanics is better is because it gives the raid some form of control over the boss, and with this kind of control the developers could design far more interesting encounters mechanics than those we have right now. Having unique encounter mechanics is how you break the “zergs” in encounters, and tanks allow encounter designers to build a lot of original boss mechanics.
And that’s what we want: unique encounters where you don’t zerg and where not everyone is better as a damage-dealer in berserker gear.
This game’s group mechanic was supposed to be DPS-control-support. Except that it doesn’t have it at all, instead it’s DPS, period, and a lot of players are unhappy about this, especially those who prefer more defense-oriented roles and get asked to get decked in berserker gear to do dungeons. You may wonder why I bring this up? Well, what is tanking? It’s control, in fact it’s the ultimate form of control, where one (or more) player is entirely dedicated to controlling the creature(s). If there was tanking, there would be control, and I think that this game’s endgame PvE would be a lot more popular than it is right now. (Wouldn’t have to be healers by the way, the tank would have his blocks and dodges to stay alive, so no it wouldn’t be the trinity, it would be DPS-control.)
That said I’m not trying to get tanks into Guild Wars 2. I’m not saying that it can’t be done without tanks, and even less that Guild Wars 2’s raids are going to be a flop without them. I just don’t understand how they will do it so that their encounters are not zergs. I don’t think we need to tell them that zergs are a no-no, most likely they figured that out 10 months ago. But how are they doing it, and how successful are they going to be at breaking zergs? That’s what I want to know.
Raids are coming to GW2…
Ascended armour/weapons are planned at some point during 2013…
Join the dots…
I can see the rewards for raids being a new form of token which when you have enough you exchange for ascended armour/weapons…the reward for raids has to be something very, very good so it makes sense.

Why?
Rewards from the dungeons are not better than rewards from the open world.
IF they add ascended armor and weapons to the raids it is extremely unlikely that they won’t add other ways to get it as well (such as Laurels/WvW/Crafting).

Aren’t there currently ascended items that you can only get by one playstyle/activity in ge?

Well, last year fractals was the only way to get ascended gear for a considerable period of time…
Its possible this time, that as well as being the main reward for raids, they introduce them as a very, very expensive laurel purchase…
You have NO CHANCE whatsoever of them being available by crafting or WvW…that’s not the way Anet do things judging from there history…
Aren’t there currently ascended items that you can only get by one playstyle/activity in ge?
Nope, there is currently not a single piece that can only be obtained by doing one activity. (Or well, one might argue that Back items might require Fractals since the only other item that can be Ascended without Fractal stuff can no longer be obtained).
But other than everything is obtainable in several different ways.
And they are quite clearly working on making stuff obtainable in more ways.

Yeah, and they also made is very clear that it was a mistake and it is highly unlikely that they would repeat that.
Yep, which would erase the problem of only having access to them by only doing one specific activity.
Most Ascended Item is currently very much obtainable in WvW.

Well, the back piece is exactly what I was thinking of. I dont currently have the backpiece. If I was to log into the game right now, I would only have one way to earn it, right? I personally don’t care as I dont want ascended gear, but that alone makes me think thakittens wrong to assume all future ascended gear will have multiple channels to obtain said gear. The karka backpiece was a pretty recent addition into the game. Did they deciee between then and now that they want to have more than one way of earning each piece of gear, or did they say that before the karka event?

They made it quite clear back when they added Fractals and the kittenstorm began that they made a mistake with making Ascended Gear obtainable only in Fractals, so it is quite unlikely that any new kind of Ascended gear will be locked into a single obtainable method.
The reason for why the back piece is currently unobtainable outside Fractals is as far as I know unknown, but I would assume it is because they are trying to find a way to balance it between the different modes.

Yes. Instead they made them locked in to one or two modes, with one always strongly preferred. Also, there is no single mode that allows you to get all of the ascended eq, and the mode that allows the most is heavily time-gated to discourage people from using it.
So, it’s entirely possible that raids will come with ascended armor, with the same armor accessible through laurels for 50+ laurels (and 100 ecto) per piece.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
If they did make a raid in gw2 it would be intereting for gear so long as they keep the token system. so even if people aren’t able to finish it so long as they can do part of it they will make progress. just much slower.
Yeah true I read the translation but then again. Now with Wildstar (even that there housing is not that great) and Archeage around the corner they can not really stay behind. Might be the stuff that needs to be put in the first expansion.
I don’t think that housing would fit in with GW2, because it would serve no purpose. I mean look at how Dragon’s Prophet did it – their PvP is for territories where players with their guilds can build houses and impose taxes upon each other. That makes everyone want to win and get territories for their guilds.
GW2 doesn’t have flying platforms that we could compete for (hell we don’t have anything to fly on, so flying territory to fight for is out of the question), the only open spaces on the Tyria map are probably zones already reserved for something so we couldn’t compete for those, that would mean that if GW2 did introduce player housing it would be an instanced place that only you and your friends could see (like Runescape), which is boring.
housing in games always reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x_QkGPCL18. Real life also reminds me of that but games even more so.

Would’ve been much better if all the furniture/trophies and whatever you’ll be decorating your house with would drop/come from dungeon chests. I really enjoyed this in PSU and no way in hell im exchanging gold for gems at these absolutely stupid prices (its what? 30gems for 1g? wtf…). At the end, if furniture is only available in the gem store i will ignore it completely.
Heh, if it was available only in dungeons I would ignore it completely.
Seems that no matter what they do, someone will ignore them completely.
I repeat myself but i again say, they should make it like in Everquest 2 where you had a Crafter that could make very much furniture of course, and then there were Items you could get from Quest, Mobs and also Dungeons of course.
So a lot of stuff to get for each playstyle.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Why would they add housing? It is such a silly concept and usually its purpose is to act as a gold/time sink.
A more interesting concept would be guild buildings, where members of a guild could congregate, but I still find it rather silly.
Housing! I am super hyped for housing, I’m just afraid that it will end up badly and/or the gem store will be heavily involved.

Many many people have been asking for housing since the game launched- just the fact that we have a home instance sort of implies that it occurred to Anet as well.
Sure it is a gold and a time sink- that is bad how?
It can also be a boost to crafting, a way for people to connect to their characters, fun, a break from constant battle, a way to show off your achievements etc.
Guild Halls serve a different purpose and the way Guild Content is now- I fully expect it to be gated behind lots and lots of influence and commendations i.e for big guilds only.
This is great for those guilds and it is needed but Player housing is also needed.

Well, that is a rather big reason you named, don’t you think?

Think I should also add that housing will cater to the players that are more into a roleplaying aspect of the game (like me). Gold/time sinks aren’t necessarily bad, either, and if the system is done well you won’t miss out on anything for not investing in housing.

Simple, don’t design a raid where everyone zergs onto a single mob…like 95% of all raid encounters out there.

Actually I completely forgot about the home instance system of this game (that should tell you what sort of impression it left me with). If housing involves the entirety of the home instance then I admit it sounds a lot more interesting to me.
Edit: Thinking more about it, it has a lot of potential. The question is can Anet make the housing system something more than just play at house? Hmmm.
(edited by Pradton.8576)
i mean you could have a huge WvW like area that is filled with houses only. would be cool actually. gives you something to do besides kill things
I would probably never visit such a place. To me it would be a graveyard full of monuments to the vanity of nameless players I don’t know or care about. Housing is just an underwhelming concept to me. It reminds me of Fable 2 and 3. They promoted the idea of bringing a friend in to your unique world to see it’s uniqueness, but who the hell really did that? Who really cared what their friend did in their Fable game world? Customizing your armor is one thing, dragging people to your own personal alternate reality is not only full of vanity, but is drenched in narcissism.
But whatever, I don’t have to see your house so it wouldn’t really bother me if they added housing or not. It’s just not for me.
Having played both GW1 and WoW I think playing GW2 feels alot more like playing WoW then it does feel like GW1.
The deciding factor for me is that WoW and GW2 are MMOs with a complete shared, persistant open world that attempted to crearte a server identity (both failed imo and WoW has long given up on that, not sure where the GW2 dev stands, we’ll see with the lfg feature).
GW1 on the other hand is a multiplayer Coop/pvp game where players only share the game lobbies and can freely move between the districts.
About loot, cosmetic only rewards are a big thing in WoW too in addition to their +gooder stat grind. Mounts and Minis are largely cosmetic because just for travel you only need 1 flying and 1 ground mount at best, yet the game throws unique mount skins at you for every step you take. Same with minis.
I am fine with cosmetic only loot. Matter of fact I prefer it. By now as we close in on the first anniversary I just feel that Anet has failed in this regard and has not delivered what they promised a year ago regarding updates to the live game.
I bet all the furniture will be ONLY available from gem store, pass no thanks, brah. Never raided in any game so i’ll try that and hopefully it’ll be fun for more than 2-3 runs.

Not making money and having it as an extra is something else. And where I got the idea from that the gem-store is more like an extra but the main money should come from game sales and expansions is because it was launched as a B2P game not as a F2P game. Thats why I am interested in the game in the first place. Don’t like F2P games because of there shop focus.
And yes if they would have yearly expansions those sales should be enough to keep the game running. F2P games run on only the shop money so B2P game should easily be able to run on box sales and expansions with maybe a little extra from the shop but without the need to focus on the shop.

You can have a sofa available in many places but the skins can be differed depending on the place. Just like your Arah example. Armor is available almost everywhere in the game but the specific Arah skin only in the Arah dungeon. (Will you need to farm tokens :S but anyway, that happens using the Arah dungeon).
meh
I don’t care for raids at all, that is why I’m here.
I have no problem with raids rewarding cosmetic awards but the moment you add stats to it, the midden will hit the fan and there will be a reckoning with a huge amount of the players.
Remember, remember the 15th of November..As for Guild housing- I realize many many people want this and that is great for them- for me not so much.
Personally, I want personal housing with a craft system tied to it.
I would kill for this.
As long as those stats are also available to get with other methods like WvW or dungeons or PvE bosses and so on that should not be a problem. With the 15th November patch they added a new type of gear (I think that is what you are referring to) and thats something else.
God, player housing…. I’ve been wanting this since release. It would be sooo cool to decorate a house with rewards from the game for completing certain things or achievements. Having it tied into crafting or your guild would be awesome as well. Hopefully they give us some sort of official declaration on what they’re up to!

Really hope it’s a karma sink really…. Lord knows I have too much of it.
Now they just need to add mounts.
Now they just need to add mounts.
If its profitable, they will. I don’t mind either. If done right, mounts could be awesome. I don’t want anything like WoW has though. I just want something to collect.

After nearly 1.5 years I honestly don’t understand why you keep bothering with him. He was already whining (not the same as complaining) before the game’s release date was announce.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
For example, I think most people who like instances in most MMOs would probably have enjoyed Fissure of Woe, The Underworld, Domain of Anguish, The Deep, Urgoz’s Warren and Slaver’s Exile.
They wouldn’t.
The goal of “instances in most MMOs” (aka raids) is to get more powerful gear. None of your examples provides more powerful gear. Ergo, raiders would have hated them.
In fact, adding raids to Guild Wars 2 without giving them more powerful gear would only make raiders complain about how they wouldn’t be properly rewarded for their “work”.
Although I’m sure ArenaNet knows about this. I will be surprised if the GW2 “raids” aren’t when we will see the introduction of Ascended weapons and armors.
I don’t believe you should make the generalization that all “raiders” would only “raid” for more powerful gear. In fact, in multiple threads, it has been said that larger parties in more difficult dungeons would suffice.
I consider myself a “raider” (in that I raided in WoW and enjoyed it) and I can tell you that all I would really like to see are raids that offer a challenge to a larger group of people with distinctive comestic rewards similar to the current dungeons in place… a unique set of armor and unique weapons.
As a side note, because I love to suggest this everywhere it’s remotely related, I’d love to see dungeons scale in difficulty based on party size (and have parties be able to be larger… 20 people or so?) so you can do dungeons with 2 people or 20. That would be nice… being able to run instances with everyone on in my guild that wants to go instead of just a few.. or if it’s a slow night, still be able to run with just a guild party of 3. While I’m at it, I’d love to see random drops from the chest that are unique to the dungeon/raid as well (certain weapons and armor) on top of the tokens.. just to spice things up… I was pretty excited when my fractal sword dropped, would love to see that everywhere (not the fractal sword, random unique cosmetic rewards.. maybe not too random.. just doesn’t drop all the time)
I bet all the furniture will be ONLY available from gem store, pass no thanks, brah.
More RNG in gamblewars 2? No thank you.
What good will raids do when boss mechanics are so dull and predictable.
I 150% agree. When was it that they said they are working on dungeon boss mechanics? February? And we have had ONE dungeon revamped, that hardly anyone runs anymore?
They give us temporary fluff BS hello-kitty party content instead of making these dungeons better.

You didn’t like the Flame and Frost dungeon? Or this new Aetherblade one? I thought they were both pretty well done as far as mechanics, story and reward go… In fact, I don’t really have any complaints about either of them :-/
From http://www.guildwars2hub.com/features/editorials/chris-whiteside-living-story-tyria
“Q: Could we see more Guild focused content on Living Story?
A: Yes. You know we’ve been focused on Guild Missions. While we can’t go into detail. We do intend to bring up a LARGE number of people into events. Encounters where lots of people can play and have fun.
The raiding is very exciting but we don’t want to speak into too much detail for stuff that is too far off. We are working on gameplay that involves guilds and lots of players.”
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…

Played PSO 2 at all yet? They seem to have a the nearly perfect formula for the housing mechanic based on obtaining decor and designing the rooms. Normal foes drop most common furniture, the rest is a RNG lottery or cash shop or bought from other players, but the lottery (fun and cash shop scratch offs) is even tame compared to the RNG here. But the only problem with PSO 2 is that housing is premium only atm and your renting that room for 30, 60, or 90 days based on how much of a length of premium you paid for. If you are playing for free, a tinier room will be out on July 17th and its permanent or you can fun scratch for a 3 day pass to housing.
Hopefully GW 2 will make it easy to get decor, and such but no renting with gems for a limited time. How decor will be gotten I purpose, will be a combination of common, uncommon, rare, and exotic drops ( or like mini packs)+ crafting and dungeon rewards and gem store and some RNG. Have over 5 ways to get furniture and stuff.
Also there must be way to store furniture not used. Also have for minis to be set up on things in the housing environment such as shelving, tables, etc.
