Try them all for a few levels and see which you personally prefer. Perhaps by practising in the PvP Lobby with the profession NPCs there. There are pros and cons to all of them.

Long story short – cross thief off the list. With that done,

Engineer – better team play and versatility then the ranger.
Ranger – better ranged combat and stronger condition damage then Engi, better survivor when solo.

I plus+’d your post for the thief part, HOWEVER…

Ranger has more condi? Not even a REMOTE chance. Better ranged combat? Not if you are good with grenades. Better PvE solo survivor than the Engi sure, thats likely true.

Well here are my reasons for my statement.

1. Ranger – longbow arrows fly way faster then grenades and it’s aimed at target, not ground. Arrows too slow? Read the wind. Problem gone.

Engi? Nothing makes his ‘nades fly faster. Yeah you have to be reaaaaaally good to hit a moving target with them if it’s not already immobilized/frozen or pinned in place by something else.

Condi damage – engi has tons of them, but just like profession itself, he’s jack of all trades, master of none. Getting 25 bleeds on engi will probably require doing 3 backflips in air and landing with a telemark. Ranger can pull off 25 fast rather easily if he wants and also has reasonable access to poison and burning. Only confusion is missing – that’s engi’s ace in the hole. But i wouldn’t say engi is far better at condis then ranger.

Bottom line is that engi is far more versatile and can do more – but he’ll have to work for it. Ranger on the other hand has simple, tried and fast ways to get the job done, given he’s able to do it at all.

Ranger is fastest condi nuker in game if looking purely at damaging conditions, if considering vuln, weakness, chill, cripple then necro. Engi is quick, but ranger is in a league of its own atm.

Current record when bleedstackin is 22 stacks in 4, 5 seconds

I think the best way to sum it all up is by saying that engi can do almost anything and everything, many of things that ranger can’t. But almost everything he does requires setup, that includes in-combat situations. A good engi has to be 2 steps ahead of events if he wants to achieve his desired results.

Ranger is the simpler, out of the box, immediate reaction to situation profession. What he does, he does well or great, what he doesn’t, he just doesn’t.

ranger is strong, but gets a little boring as it’s very simple to play. I dislike engineer, but that’s more personal preference (feels way too clunky for my tastes). Thief is massive loads of fun. super mobile, very strong and can easily annihilate in pvp, though doesn’t have much utility in pve at 80 outside stealth shroud for content skipping and backstab

Thieves are hard to play and incredibly fragile, but they hit like a truck in melee range.
Their ranged weapons suck tbh, pistols are just weak while bow doesnt have very high single target dps, but is great for aoe dps and utility.

Engineers are very versatile, but at least for my taste they depend too much on gimmicks and their direct/weapon dps is somewhat low.
I personally also dont like being forced to use kits (especially grenades and bombs) for a good performance most of the time because all weapon are weird/weak.

Rangers can be played very casually and are probably the only class with a truly good ranged weapon that doesnt make any compromise for either range or damage.
They are also quite mobile, especially with their melee weapons.
The only downside is that they dont offer much utility for groups. Most of the time you’ll use spotter and (frost?!?) spirit because the other spirits arent great.
Ranger is somewhat easy to play too.

Thieves are possibly the most difficult class in the game to master due to their Initiative system an how ridiculously fragile they are, but they are a lot of fun and potent if you can manage to not die, and they bring a few unique thing to the table.

Rangers are easy mode for leveling especially due to the pet and their great ranged damage and downed skills. For serious content they hold their own but are not great at min/maxing. They can get boring, unless you just really love collecting and experimenting with pets.

Engineers are just fun as hell and have tons of utility and build options. They aren’t quite as easy as Rangers but a lot easier than Thieves.

Spirit of Stone is pretty kitten good – protection doesn’t just walk anyday on the sidewalk…unless you’re a ranger with stone spirit.

But then again irl if your pro zerker stack died standing flat in three aoe damage circles that’s probs that noob ranger damage being too low;)

once you learn to play engineer its a very powerfull class.

it does req a lot of effort and planning. that’s why most bad players avoid it.

also with the right builds engies have high dmg and a lot of CC available to them. it just reqs understanding how to use the engie.

also engies are not “gimmicky”. kits and turrets are a class mechanic and work very well.

combine the skills of kits + weapons u can apply condies at an alarming rate and keep them refreshed with little to no effort.

also using grenades in melee range is 99% hit rate when using them in PVP, its what shortbow thiefs calls “shotgunning” using short bow 2 at melee range and detonating it before it lands.

Obviously you have a fetish for leather, I’d get that checked out.

Secondly play all right now and don’t decide to gear any until you see the class specifications for engineer and thief.

Staff Druid, Hammer ________ (engineer), or whatever the thief will get may change how every class plays radically.

You just have to play all three a little bit and see what suits your style.

As for me, I can’t get the hang of Thief, get bored with Rangers, but love Engineers. Engineers have a uniqueness to them, while Thieves and Rangers are rather generic.

But, who knows how specializations will change things.

If you’re looking for social acceptance, you would probably be better off with Thief….

There is still a giant stigma about Engineers and Rangers when it comes to Dungeons and Fractals. If you’re looking to play by yourself most of the time, I would suggest Ranger as you do have a Pet to help tank for you. Granted, the pet is rather clunky on terms of mechanics but it is a lot better then it use to be.

PvP wise, It really comes down how you like to play
If you like to bunk but still do decent damage, you will be better off with Engineer.
If you like to snipe and skirmish you will be better of with a Ranger.

WvW wise you’re in a similar circumstance,
If you like to zerg, you would be better off with Engineer with Kits.
If you like to roam and take camps/sentrys/mercenaries you will be better off as a Ranger.

They both have their pros and cons and both are a ton of fun.

I would personally do what a couple others have suggested and try playing them both

To be honest: if you want a ranged character, make a Ranger.

Thief is mostly melee and Engineers will be melee most of the time as well for better grenade accuracy, bombs or properly using their rifle (which is effectively a melee weapon)

I would like to add, I have played all 3, but especially Engie as a main. Engie you need to read up on rotations, when you see what you can accomplish when you aren’t purely using flamethrower, it will surprise you. Bombs and Grenades are pretty good, and acid bomb on elixer gun is amazing.

All the classes need time to feel them out, but Engie even more so as its one of the more complex classes.

I would vote Engie. Then, in some months, do another, nothing is stopping you having all, you can still main one and mess around on the others.
