Stop playing glass cannon or knight armor and go regen bunker. Against sword thieves save the dodges/evade for larcenous strike (the stab), and against backstab D/P punish with bonfire and monarch’s leap while they’re stealthed so it’s hard for them to land a backstab.
You won’t kill a thief that doesn’t want to die because they’re a cheap class that exploits a broken mechanic (stealth), but at least you shouldn’t be dying to them if you pay attention.
lol a cheap class that exploits a broken mechanic
FranBunnyFFXII go onto the thief or ranger forum for more information.

We won’t be stealthing if we don’t have the durability of a wet tissue.

You do realize that the equip you’re wearing gives you stats too, right? That you went 30 point into the traitline that gives toughness doesn’t mean that you can’t be a glasscannon. You could still be wearing berserker or rampager gear and thus be very fragile.
Edit: Wait, you’re talking about sPvP. Well, then it’s the amulet. What kind of amulet are you wearing?
Traited signets does wonders (Signet of Stone). Thief burst = 0, 0, 0, 0, 0.
I don’t mind 1v1 vs a thief. Often the fights for me are close but if we both go down, I win.
First … absolutely first thing to do is to target the thief and F1 the pet so it will stay on target no matter what. I run LB and Sword/Torch and keep a trap equipped. When it is time to fight the thief, it is time for melee mode. With the sword evades and regular dodge, just keep moving. Torch gives you and additional AOE to the trap as well as a short range attack. Pet will instantly re-engage when thief pops back up. When I down a thief, I often just let the pet finish it off while I move on to something else.
There are a lot of ways to approach a thief as a ranger, so I wont go into them all.
One word though; “Traps.” A properly played trap ranger is a very, very real threat to any class including thieves.

Every glass cannon has the durability of this wet tissue; you’re not special. Spec acrobatics and toughness/vit with shadow arts and your wet tissue durability is gone plus sword evade.
You’re the one class besides mesmer that can afford to spec glass cannon and farm every other glass cannon in the game except mesmers, and even in your GC spec you’re able to threaten bunkers.
