On a more serious note, I’ve been leveling an alt and I haven’t been playing my level 80 character, so I wouldn’t know. However, knowing ArenaNet and the lengths they went to in order to encourage people to use the cash shop, nothing surprises me anymore.

How many items have you salvaged? Do you think it has been a statistically relevant mass? I am not defending anet per se as I do not have the numbers myself, but accusations need some foundation. And it seems unlikely that a single player has salvaged enough rares to come up with a reliable count.

Well, as a paid-up member of the guild of chronic cynics, there’s only one explanation for it. GW2 may have sold 2 million copies and may even sell a million more before the end of the year. GW2 is expensive to buy, so they’ve made an absolute fortune. BUT! There’s no subscription, and much of that money will go straight to investors, to the taxman and to making expansions.
What’s left over to pay for the servers? Nothing, or not much. They NEED to make money from that gem store and without selling power they are going to have to push and prod you to use it in other ways. If that means completely kittening your ability to make money without spending money in the gem store first, they’ll do it.
You guys know that if they’re trying to make us buy gems, the price of gems will drop.
It’s REALLY low now like much lower than it should be.
Anyone who has a clue to get money can get anything they want from the cash shop easily with gold now.

It most definitely has changed (not necessarily for worse), and I talk from my experience as well as many others I have talked to. Most people have noticed a difference applied yesterday specifically. There are other means to make money either way, and selling the rares is a much more stable income. This has nothing to do with gem store, doh.

i used to make all my gold from buying yellows and salvaging them into ectoplasm so i’ll share my view.
back when i started doing this on average i would get 2+ per yellow i salvaged, reliably, i did this for a couple hundred yellow weapons btw.
then i noticed a nerf a while back where i would get around 1.4 ectos per yellow i salvaged again i did this hundreds of times.
now i find it hard to get ectos from them at all and not only that but ectos prices have to started to rise again up to 3 – 4s what they were worth a little while back indicating it’s now harder to get them.
Oh no! You can’t get ectos easily! Anet is clearly making you buy gems in order to make money now!! Because you know selling orricalchum anything or any of the super fancy lv 400 crafting matts wont make you ANY money at all!!
Seriously, stop screaming that the skys falling because they fixed the drops on Ectos, the fact they were dropping so awesome just screamed “Not working as intended” especially if you take the first games ectos into consideration…

So you are assuming that it was not working as intended before? On what base? I tend to fall on the side that experianced the content (ectos) from the start to this very point where it seems evident a nerf has occured.
I mean, they ninja’s us with their ‘anti-bot’ mechanism that screws over normal players who want to farm.

The fact i was getting 2 ectos from a rare/exotic and matts and the best gear craftable (which is supposed to be something special and blah blah blah that sort of thing) costing 10… That’s just me though, I personally wouldn’t care if they dropped 2 at a time because it’d mean i get my sparkly weapons and armor sooner then later, but hey whatcha gonna do?
Yeah, i think the whole point of the anti-bot mechanisim is to also screw over people trying to farm the same event over and over again… i just kinda roam around the map killing everything and jumping into any nearby DE as well as waypointing around like a madman and still manage to make a good 10 silver or so in an hour… so god knows what someone whose goal is to make money and not use 10 waypoints in an hour can make…

I just salvaged 5 rares between level 73 and 76 with a fine (blue) kit and got 1, 1, 1, 0, 2 from the 5 rares, the 2 was from the 76 rare, the others were 75 and below.

or it means more people are getting their crafting skills to 400 and actually have demand for ectoplasm.

I thought that was kinda implied… you can just go push one of the chains in Orr and roll around in all the karma and gold it throws at you, it’s pretty crazy…

Why do you even need gold? Once you have a good set of exotics you’re pretty much set for gear, anything more is just cosmetic.
