Rebuild Lions Arch

It is time for us to rebuild our fallen city. Join the captains council in rebuilding lions arch. Donate resources, manpower and even defend stock piles from opportunistic thieves.

Council commendations

With the previous success of rebuilding the lighthouse after the Karka invasion, the captains council has reestablished council commendations as compensation for various donations of resources for the effort of rebuilding lions arch. These commendations can be exchanged for old and new rewards.

Manpower Needed

Although stock piles of resources are needed to rebuild, refining those stock piles into proper building supplies is a massive undertaking when you are rebuilding a whole city. The captains council needs you to help refine materials, logs into planks, planks into boards, metals into ingots, ingots into nails and tools, even cloth needs to be dyed and cut.

Defending stock piles

With such large stockpile of supplies being made for the recreation of the city, opportunistic thieves are trying to take a cut, protect our resources or lions arch may never be rebuilt.

The wall of recognition

The captains council is commissioning the creation of a wall of recognition, the names of the top 25 singular donator’s and top 25 guild donator’s. These people will be forever memorialized on this wall for future generations to pay homage to.

!!!Now comes the exciting bit!!!!

Choose your design

After combing through hundreds of applicants the captains council has chosen the top three applicants to design the new lions arch. When donating resources, helping refine those resources or defending stock piles you will be rewarded with chits (tickets) to cast your vote for the lions arch design you want.

OR

The more the better

Depending on how many resources are donated certain parts of lions arch will be upgraded, upon reaching certain levels of resources small things such as memorials to previous events taking place in lions arch will be built, at higher levels a stadium will be built for the return of Moa racing to lions arch. At ludicrous levels (millions of resources) excess resources will be sold off to the Arcane Council for a complete redesign of the local way-point system to allow greater efficiency of travel around lions arch.

Rebuilding lions arch overview

The main aim of this update/event is allow the community to help create something for the world they live in. Helping recreate the capitol is a chance for the community and developers together to create (hopefully) permanent content for the game that we can enjoy and be proud of together.

Since this update revolves around the recreation/redesign of the whole map of lions arch i have done my best to recycle old events in a new form so most of the development time can be spent towards the recreation/redesign of the city.

The update has four main components the first three being recycled events in a new form and the last one being a choice of two events that dramatically effect the new lions arch.

Component 1 – Donation and Council commendations.

This is a recycled event from the start of the Karka invasion involving the rebuilding of the lions arch lighthouse. The player base donated resources in exchange for various amounts of council commendations and exchanged these commendations for various rewards. This served multiple purposes, firstly being a drain on the massive amounts of resources in the economy and a gold sink. The rewards were simple tools and disassembler kits which were a godsend to newer players and veterans alike, it also allowed an access to the lionguard weapons that did not involve karma. I think this should be the same but with new rewards added, like a back peice or mini to commemorate the rebuilding of lions arch, maybe even access to different cultural weapon skins (since this is a city for all the five races) as a way to get the skins for newer characters that does not involve massive amounts of karma.

Component 2 – Refinement of materials.
One of the two major events taking place in lions arch. This one can just be simple tasks or more complex ones depending on what dev’s are willing or able to do. Here are a few ideas from me.

Foreman Gnashblade
Evon Gnashblade has organized workmen to refine simple materials into tools and items to rebuild lions arch but his aide forgot to organize labor to move materials from the stock piles to the workmen. Evon Gnashblade will call out for various materials to be delivered to various workstations, it will be upto the players to ensure that the materials get to the workforce in time.

This event could be as simple or as complex as you want, you could have one stockpile of “resources” and one workplace to deliver to or you could have multiple stock piles of different resources and multiple workstations. This is basically a rework of the Crimson Wurm mechanic, The players run over the “resource pile” then towards the proper “resource receiver” then you have basic amounts shouted out by Gnasblade depending on the scaling of the event e.g 50/100/150

Clearing the rubble
This is a simple event based on the mechanic of the Cobalt Wurm, there are certain areas that need to be blown up and cleared away, go the the various piles of explosives grab a barrel and pace it in the right spot, this can also be scaled from 50/100/150 barrels then then you can have the rubble destroyed (and reappear before the event starts again) a-la tequatals entrance to sparkfly fen. This opens up an option to show progress throughout the event. maybe at the end of each day (or few days) some of the rubble and debris around lions arch disappears permanantly, you could even have rubble events in a certain place one day and then after a few days that rubble disappears and new rubble must be cleared at other areas. With rubble disappearing it give a sense of progression but i do understand some of the rubble serves a purpose, such as allow access to jp’s and vistas. That would stay, but other rubble is there just for looks, that can be removed.

Automated Refinement.
Our asura friends have supplied automated refinement machines to convert resources into tools and building materials, but we need your help to fill those machines. This is event based on the inside Amber Wurm mechanic. There are three large machines one for wood, one for metal, one for textiles. Players have to grab the right “Material transport rifle” and shoot the material into the right machine. Each machine requires a certain amount of materials to succeed, this can be scaled for larger amounts e.g 50/100/150

The reason i re-use the mechanics from the Wurms as new events is to hopefully teach new or inexperienced players those mechanics so they would be more confident when facing the Wurm mega-boss. Nothing would please me more then people thinking “Hey this Cobalt Wurm phase is just like that Evon Gnashblade event i did when we were rebuilding lions arch.” teaching the basic mechanics for mega bosses in this less stressful environment would be a benefit to new player and ones that are afraid of screwing up a run because they might not know the mechanics.

Component 3 – Protect the stock piles

This is a blatant ripoff of the Candidate Trials from the cutthroat politics content, as stated before these events are not the main focus of rebuilding of lions arch but are put in for another activity to do for players. More content like this provides more challenges and varied options for character with different play styles to enjoy, that is never a bad thing.

Component 4 – A new lion’s arch

This is it folks, the biggest part of the patch, a lot of work for the dev’s and a new map for us that we get to shape, as a community. I basically have two different ideas for this part, the first will be very intensive work for the community and the dev’s but has the biggest payoff. The second is the lazy option, but still a bit of work and allows the community input into the lion arch that is to be built so we can all enjoy and feel that we had an influence on the development of the map.

The Voting choice
This could be amazing if the dev’s at Anet pull it off. It would be a lot of work, but i think it would make the community very happy. With this option people would receive tickets (chits) on completing events or donating to the rebuild and with these chits they can vote, much like the cutthroat politics voting, for a new design to rebuild lions arch. There would only be three choices to choose from, the first would be rebuilding lions arch like it was. The second choice would be another design made by the dev’s (who i am sure are already thinking or even planning a new lions arch) the third design would be a community submitted design.

I know, i know, a community submitted design would be a very hard thing to pull off. Many people would submit unthinkable designs, designs too extravagant or too simplistic to use. we could use the forums as an area to submit designs (with maybe a reward for the best) and then the dev’s can look them over and pick 3 that are great, and that they are able to make within a reasonable time frame without going mad. Then you could have the community vote on those three to be the last design choice for the in game vote.

The community based idea does have some definite drawbacks though. Map makers would have to design at least two new lions arch’s and only be able to use one. Also what if people choose the old lions arch design? That means they have designed two maps that they cant use. This would very much land in the category of wasted time for dev’s and that is never a good thing from a business point of view. I guess that would have to be weighed against the good will and interest in the game created by such and ambitious event outcome.

The stretch goals

Taking a kickstarter-ish approach to the problem. The map itself would be one made by the dev’s with a certain amount of lumber, textiles and metals to create lions arch itself. After which the community can keep on donating resources for extra benefits and different things to be made in lions arch. These stretch goals would take many forms, one idea is to have small stretch goals, like getting 10,000 extra lumber/textiles/metal will sponsor the making of a small memorial statue to remember the defeat of scarlet and her minions in the form of a statue showing the destruction of the Breachmaker. This could evolve to much larger goals, such as donating 100,000 lumber/textiles/metal would garner the construction of new bridges to make travel easer around the city. These goals could be anything the dev’s and community desire, the devs could even open up a forum for people to make suggestions.

If i was to make a suggestion it would be if we reach a certain number of gold ore/gold ingot’s and gemstones we would get out beloved lion statue back anew and in working order, but if we reach a stretch goal of say 100,000 gold ore/gold ingot’s and gemstones we get a pimped out version of the lion statue, encrusted with gemstones and lots of golden embellishments.

Depending on the dev’s we could track an overall amount of resources for larger or fantastic goals and track each resource individually for different smaller rewards and upgrades to the city.

In the end you could set ludicrous goals as well, like millions of resources donated could sponser the creation of a new stadium to return moa racing to lions arch. Crazy stuff that may never be reached, but if the community set their minds to reach it, i think they should be rewarded for it.

The benefit of this method of restoring lions arch is that any map the dev’s want could be used, with allowance for certain improvements upon reaching goals. Also the restoration of lions arch could take place then the extra goals could be constructed and implemented in the coming months.

man this needs a TL:DR version =(

In any case i know in the end this is just a suggestion and a pretty wild one at that, if anything it might give a dev’s an idea or two they could use in the future. Id be happy with that at least. I would also enjoy any ideas or constructive criticism you have.

Have a good one

p.s sorry for the poor grammar and spelling, its late… ill go through it and edit it when i get up tomorrow morning, i just had the idea and wanted to write it out while it was in my head

First we need a scrap legion from the char to break down all that metal in the water and on land. Then a huge sink for building materials must be set in place. Afterthat we put a working force of Quaggans to the task.
