They call it a red panda mini when it looks nothing like a panda. Why? It looks like a fox or re-textured low res raccoon.

Was that mini made in china? It would explain the low quality and calling it a panda when it’s not :P

I hope that my sarcasm detector is still functionnal.

As an avid mini collector that couldn’t get the raccoon I’m really disappointed the red panda turned out to be a badly made copy. So much cuteness in its movements like a real red panda but such bad graphics I could have been awesome.

I’m going to echo the people saying that the quality on this thing is below the normal quality of the other mini-pets. I think “sub-standard” is the right term to use here.

Not only is this disappointing, but it worries me that this is the new standard of quality that they’re allowing for HoT development. Yes, we’ve seen some already, and yes it was pretty. But if we start seeing stuff like this in there as well, it will bring the whole thing down.

I’m going to seriously, SERIOUSLY hope that this was a mistake, and we got the wrong version somehow. So they can patch it out in a day or two, and give us the finished version.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

I wanted to get one and when I saw it I changed my mind. It’s very poorly done. Especially the legs, they are too thin and too short. The general shape of the body and especially the running looks like a badger’s not like a red panda’s. The red panda has longer legs, much thicker, the hind legs are slightly longer than the front ones, and the legs appearance is a little bow-legged. The real red panda’s run is very different than that of the mini, it doesn’t look like the belly is almost touching the ground and it doesn’t “slither” like a badger the way the mini does. On the red panda you can actually see every step, it has a little bit of a spring in the step when it walks/runs the way a fox or coyote has.

That is even before talking about the coloring, that shows some poor attempt to a gradient, and the lighter hue of the gradient on the mini is on the back, instead of being on the sides like the real animal looks like. Also the stripes on the tail as well as the spots on the head are not contrasted enough. This video is of red pandas – the mini is some kind of animal with vague similarities to a red panda.

There’re are a lot of cutesy mini pets that don’t exist in-game outside of their minipetation form… which is why I made this a while back c.c https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Anyone-think-we-need-more-ambient-critters

In other news~ I’ve never heard of a red pands and never imagined it wouldn’t look like a panda. So GW2 has given me a TIL moment. I saw it back when it was datamined though.

Kudos for the word “minipetation”. Anyway, as a bit of trivia, the red panda is actually what you see in the icon of Mozilla Firefox. It’s not a fox. “Firefox” is actually a nickname for the red panda. Other names include “red bear-cat”, and “fire cat”. They are not related to the panda bears, but to the weasel, raccoon and skunk.

I think I have every right so say, that the quality is below the average, or how some would call it, to complain. It’s like giving a review of a book, I share my thoughts and usually, this is very welcome.
So why should anyone complain about people that give feedback?
I don’t regret buying the red panda, it’s still adorable and since I don’t buy a lot of minis, it’s a nice addition to my little collection.
But still I think that the quality is poor and yes, I can say this because I bought it, because I was able to observe it and not just looking at some pictures. And no one here was ranting or wanting their gems back. What I read are concerns about a drop in quality and a hope that the panda will be reworked, or at least, be the only mini of such quality.
What I do with my gems it entirely up to me and giving feedback, positive or negative, is an essential part of quality assurance.
(I hope you get what I mean, my english is not that good.)

I was wanting to preview this mini but was surprised when I couldn’t.

This is why it’s good to follow people who datamine stuff. That_shaman posted the previewable mini item code about a week ago, I totally knew what I was buying. If you care for spoilers though, you gotta be careful about the information, but he’s always kind enough to post spoiler tags. http://www.reddit.com/user/that_shaman/submitted/

Some minis are in the shop only for some time, so I wanted it no matter the crappy texture.

I agree completely that its not good quality at all.
It would be really nice if a mod replied to our concerns, maybe letting us know if it will be updated.
They have done it in the past with the mining tool animations so it’s not unheard of.

Seriously people, if you want quality items STOP BUYING THINGS.

Every time you say “well this isn’t very good, but I bought it anyway!” the only thing Anet sees is that you bought it.

They would sell you an untextured box as a mini so long as you bought it (and I wouldn’t put it past them to try it!).

No preview in game? Or at least not when I checked 3 hours ago.

Anyway.

Glad I came across this thread.
Was about to buy it when I get home, but not after seeing those screenies.

When the goth-hawk hairstyle came out I was excited and bought a hair kit for it, only to find out in game it looked kind of cruddy and pixellated. I filed a ticket with anet and told them the preview didnt match the in game appearance and they refunded me the hairkit. If anyone is really unhappy with the red panda i suggest taking it up with anet and seeing if you can get your gems back.

Although I have yet to actually run around with one of these minis I would like to voice my opinion by agreeing with many others stating in this thread that both these newly released minis are:

  • Low res in appearance
  • Moose lacks features as opposed to Red Panda in regards to fur sticking up/out
  • Seem to be ripped straight out of a beta version, transformed into a mini without testing

If there is anything positive I have regarding these minis it’s probably the subtle animations they give off:

  • Both ears flickering/moving about is cute
  • Red Panda’s tail has a smooth animation

That’s about it. I feel this duo has the potential to be irresistibly adorable if only ANet had put more effort into the model textures/skins.

I don’t know, have people estranged from nature so much, that they don’t know how mooses are running.

I saw this kind of incorret things from moose minipet:

  • Minipet moose is running like deer and it have short legs
  • Mooses can trot and run wild
  • Mooses can not be jumpy
  • Mooses have long legs.

This only makes me think, that designer who have implement this mini moose ever seen real moose.

Here is link where moose is running in water:

I put this comment in here, because I didn’t want to start new thread.

Okay, it seems like the quality of texture was corrected BUT!

1. If you teleport to another location with the mini out, the quality will decrease randomly and it takes a while for the better textures to load. Hide/show the mini will fix immediately, but it’s annoying to do.
2. In HoM and home instances, the better textures don’t load up at all, switching on/off is required.
3. There’s still something odd about red panda’s eyes, it’s like they’re hollow.

This is not settings change between two first images, just my textures loading up slow as hell. However, in instances like home or HoM, for some reason, they sometimes don’t load up at all. I have a dual core, so I can’t check changes with “high-res character textures” option.

I love my red panda as it is.
Sure, it doesn’t look 100% exactly like a red panda, the head could be a bit more realistic (more flat – the nose is a bit too long imo – with minimal bigger ears), but all the rest is absolutely fine and personally I think its the most cutest minipet of all so far
