Is an app that captures and/or analyzes the screen allowed for player use? It won’t function like a macroing program. It will function like an overlay, and other functions of the app will be based on the screen itself.

Screen capture software is alright. What do you mean by analyzes the screen?
What exactly is it analyzing?

For example, it will detect when a PvP match ends or close to an end, and then it will take a screen capture of the scoreboard, then from that screen capture, it will extract data and record the details of the match in a database.

heh… hax…..tester…. lol. I can think of a thousand sinister things a screen capture app could do to break the game and the eula… better submit the code to anet and let them look it over or somethin… sounds fishy, and highly bannable to me… but its just my opinion.

as a side note… screen capture is also a way simple auto targeting hacks work… give you an advantage in pvp too… I would say no.

Screen capture is not bannable… I use Nvidia’s Shadowplay to record ingame footage with screen capture and nothing happened to me…

not saying any and all screen capture is bannable, just saying for the purpose of PvP I have seen screen capture used to auto target say…. mesmers after decoys are placed etc… clearly giving an advantage etc… like i said, submit the code for parousal so they know nothing nefarious is being used. I dont have first hand knowledge of any wrong doing, all I know is that it has been used in FPS’s specifically to auto target players, it can be used here for the same purpose.

Ah yes that would be cheating.

ANet isn’t going to peruse the code and give a yea/nay on it. They do not police mods, they simply refuse them and make them bannable except for API stuff such as Overwulf. They’ve made this stance clear over the years. They simply won’t give a go ahead on a currently ok mod only to have it tweaked until it does violate the rules, they aren’t going to keep monitoring mods. Just assume any mod is bad unless you find a lot of evidence supporting it as legit.

As long as a program is not touching the client or reading private data from the client in any way, it’s fine. To capture and analyze the screen is to simply take a screenshot and process it.

I have seen screen capture used to auto target say…. mesmers after decoys are placed etc…

Targeting is a separate function that has nothing to do with screen capturing. To add target functionality is to automate input, which is against the rules.

better submit the code to anet and let them look it over or somethin

ArenaNet does not vet 3rd party programs.

if it is just a capture then I dont see any issue, but if you are running a seperate prog to analyze and then lock cursor or clicks to it, then yes it becomes a hack/cheat… as an indirect result of using a capture app. Especially one not made by a reputable company like nvidia or overwolf etc… I stand by my original statement… I wouldnt do it.

wasnt clear on what anet approved or not, so did not mention it, thanks for the info on that.

OP,

Your best bet would be to create a program yourself or find one that can analyze the data and organize it accordingly, and manually take the screen shots.

Then you can point the program to automatically grab any new files added to a specific folder (i.e. the screen shot save folder) and analyze them.

Or, manually take the screen shots, Just bind the screen shot button to something you can hit quickly and easily, and analyze and organize the data yourself at a later time.

Either way, it would have to be something that doesn’t in any way interact with the game, nor automate any function of the game (i.e. automatic screen shots).

OK thanks for all the input guys (and assurance). I’ll go on ahead with my little side project. I’ll submit it to anet if it’s possible like CorrynnStarr said just to be on the safe side. ^^;;
