Release names
There are plenty of names still available. Names can have spaces, you know.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
I have to disagree. What if a new interesting content comes out and those people decided to log in again?
I don’t think ANet should force people to give up names just because someone hasn’t logged in.
What if the person was in the military serving their country and didn’t have access to the game? What if they were too busy with life or school in 2014, but lost their job and now have time to play?
ANet has said several times that permabanned accounts lose the char names permanently as part of the punishment and they have no plans to change this.
As to accounts that have been gone for a long time, they want no barriers to those people returning. It would be a strong disincentive to return if you logged and all your chars had lost their names You pay for your account, and it and the names on it are good until the game closes down.
Guild Wars 1 has been on for 10 years now and they have never released names, no matter how long it was since the person last played, and they are keeping to this policy.
Military. Jobs. School. IRL. There are plenty of reasons for someone to take extended breaks from the game. For the first year my little sister wasn’t able to get on because her laptop broke and it took her a year to get a new one; now she usually only plays when we both have a day off and she’s in the mood for GW2. I am not in favor of ever releasing names.
If someone’s account is banned, should their character names be released as well? I don’t think so. The offenders could make new accounts and use the same names if they desired. Maybe someone gets a reused name and finds that quite a few people already hate him/her because they don’t know it’s a different person. Maybe it’s the same offender using the same name as a statement of defiance to the game’s ability to reprimand offenders.
ANet should never ever punish people by taking away their names for being offline for any period of time, and they should never allow the opportunity for names of permabanned offenders to be placed back into the environment. These are my opinions on the matter.

Thank you, Donari. It’s really helpful to see those posts, and I appreciate your taking the time to find them so that Ryuga can understand our policy about names.
