This isn’t a thread about being able to hide your name or take yourself off of the leaderboards. This is a thread about intentionally not staying on the leaderboards or following them, because the “work” involved in staying on them takes away from your enjoyment of the game.

Probably, if I hadn’t been on the leaderboards accidentally when they came out, this wouldn’t be a problem…but I was 972…in the top 1000. Since then I’ve gone up to top 400.

And you know, I see achievements all the time in dailies that I dont’ really enjoy, but I’ve been doing them to keep my achievement score up…and I think I’m going to stop.

I don’t see any reason to put pressure on myself to play the game differently than I’d normally play it. In fact, I enjoyed the game more before the leaderboards came out. And I intend to enjoy the game again.

So I’m going to stop thinking about/focusing on achievements. I’ll let myself slip quietly off the boards, and go back to just having fun.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes. I asked for leaderboards from the beginning. Got to 28k via salvaging and was happy to have them wiped ’cause it felt like they were finally going to fix the system to make achievements based on actual achievement.

Instead dailies make up 65% of the available points (and counting) so I’m forced to log on daily (to the point I feel anxious that I’ll get sick and not be able to log on, planning out redundancy plans involving getting other people to log on for me). Luckily I’m able to stop myself before I get in to full blown psychotic overplanning and have skipped a few days when I’m tired of the BS, but being forced to play daily to compete just isn’t fun, and I know that the people I’m competing against are in the exact same boat.

I don’t want to be the king of the frustrated, or compete against attrition: he who last quits wins. They (for me anyway) have created a system where winning feels even more empty than normal, and that’s difficult when dealing with imaginary internet points.

I feel your pain. I don’t get sick if I don’t log in, because I play enough where I get the dailies anyway. It’s the “extra” dailies that are making it harder to stay on top. I already do the regular and PvP daily every day. Then I do all the dailies except crab toss, and the WvW dailies (some of which I do sometimes).

But you know…I had more fun just goofing off and doing what I wanted. I want to play and enjoy the game.

People keep saying there’s no required grind in this game, and they’re right…as long as you change your mind set. That’s why I’m going to change mine.

Lol. When that first came out, checked and I was in the top 90%. (Percentile?) And it was meaningless. Did Ascalon dungeon twice. Did fractals a few times because guildies needed more people (at level 2 now iirc). Did the ending story dungeon twice, again because of guildies needing help. And that’s it. No WvW. No PvP. Just a bunch of points from leveling 8 professions in the low level areas and playing a lot of hours. I do try to get as many achievement points each daily that I reasonably can, but I have no idea why.

Imo, if someone like me can be way up there and have done so little, the Leaderboards don’t show anything really more than time played.

I have looked at the leaderboards only once… the day they were published because I was curious to see how they had done the web site. I had left one post about that time saying I believe that inclusion on the leaderboard ought to be optional.

Since then, other than an occasional post by someone, I have totally forgotten they exist. Vayne, your thread is the first time in months I have actually remembered they are there.

So, no, their existence does not affect me at all, my play or my enjoyment (or not) of the game.

I don’t play to achievements. I don’t play for achievements. Or numbers or rankings. I have no need. I play for myself and I play for my guild. Nothing matters more than that.

For those that enjoy them, in whatever way works for you: fantastic. Happy gaming!

BG: 52 alts, 29 lvl 80’s. They all look good, so I am done with the game: Oct 2014

I want to be on goldenwing’s side!

I don’t even understand the point of achievement points let alone why they need a leader board.

Fire up the Hyperbowl ma, we’re going to town!

When you think about it, what do you earn from doing a daily? 5 silver (big whoop) a jug of karma (essentially useless if you aren’t getting a Legendary) a mystic coin (ok if you use them, otherwise not so much. I have a full stack and ~90 more) and a laurel (if you want what the karma sellers buy then useful, otherwise not) and a few more points on a meaningless Leaderboard.

I suggested one time to the group I play with that we stop doing the daily, but they want to chase the carrot in front of their noses. I guess it gives structure to the game, that may be the big attraction.

I never once even looked at the Leader Boards. I know I’m not at the bottom, but I also know I am not very high up either. I like getting achievements done, but it is a slow process. I also can skip those that are not fun at all to me like Crab Toss.

The addition of those boards made me sad, because I predicted it would bring on more elitism. Thankfully it has not been as bad as I feared. Still, just yesterday I read that to be successful one needs to have over 6k achievement points. So I am falling a little short on that standard, apparently. I am not letting it ruin my fun, though it did feel slightly unpleasant.

I’ll still continue to play when I feel like it, do what i feel like doing. I love to get my daily and monthly done, but I don’t care about the ‘extra’ options. I use the daily and montly mainly to level my youngest character.

Similar to what goldenwing said here. I’ve actually only ever seen the leaderbords once after they were published. Ever since then, I only remember that they exist somewhere when they are mentioned at the forum. Maybe I should look at them again, just out of curiosity (not because I really care on which rank I am or something). But to be honest, I would first have to check the wiki, so I know where to find them. And if it’s not in the wiki, then I’ll have to search, haha.

The only useful thing about the achievement leaderboards is that they provide an easy way to determine when someone was last online. Other than that, they’re pointless. You know there’s something wrong with them when you see people complaining about crab toss with the excuse they’re forced to do it to stay on top.

Companies in general are taking achievements way too far, for example with the next xbox rewarding achievements for watching tv. Once they were used to identify true accomplishments for going the extra mile, but now they’re just used as tricks to provide a feeling of being rewarded to appease the masses. They’re very cheap to make after all.

There’s too many daily options out there right now. Having a lot of options is nice, but rewarding every option means we have to do every or most of the options to get rewarded as much as possible.

I wish they’d limit the amount of achievement points you can get per day. Like maybe 5-6 from both pve and pvp achievements combined. It gets boring doing all of the dailies just because if you don’t do them you’ll miss out on achiv points that you’ll never be able to get.

We’ll still log on every day to not miss daily AP, but we won’t have to spend so much time on them and do things we like to do. Some days I don’t want to do any pve, I just want to pvp, or the other way around, but then I’ll miss AP if I don’t do both.

Huh? looky there. I never knew that existed more or less attempted to find it. I mean I had always read about it here on the forums but the thought of lookin’ for it never seem to cross my mind. Quite depressing really.

As for how I feel about it, I really don’t have an opinion on it. The only Cheevos I cared about was the ones on my Xbox 360 account and God knows I stopped trying to achieve any of those things anymore.

Top 200 player here…. and I share your sentiment.

Today I logged on, and just didn’t feel like completing all the extra categories associated with the daily.

While I don’t feel that this is something that warrants a thread on the forums, I do want you to know that you are not alone.

I went through a ‘chasing achievement points’ phase…

Then I realised I was doing stuff that I didn’t enjoy…

So I stopped, now just do whatever I want, far, far more enjoyable…

Nothing against leaderboards, for those that want them…but I am not interested…

Well this is the first day in a long time I didn’t do the PvP daily, or even finish my daily, so we’ll see how it goes. Mind you, I’m not feeling all that well, so I’m not doing much of anything.

Glad to see I’m not alone anyway.

What is a leaderboard?

if you know the answer, you have way too much free time.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

I think everyone goes through a period where they get distracted by some shiny goal that causes them to pursue things that aren’t fun.

It’s a real shame because this game can be fun in many different ways, but, at least for me, only if you don’t actively pursue any goal other than doing what you feel like, right now.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

LMAO! It’s http://leaderboards.guildwars2.com

Lol. Is this URL linked somewhere? I mean, if you don’t know the URL, you can pretty much only find it if you get the idea to try exactly this URL, or if you google it. I’m having a hard time thinking that they’ve intended the leaderboards to be a “hidden feature”, so I think they have to be linked somewhere… I just never found out where, haha.

So, when I read stuff like “there are too many options for the daily achievements because I need to do all of them to get all the achievement points possible”… then I really start thinking that some people should go see a doctor. And that’s NOT meant in an offensive way; more in a honestly concerned way. o.o

The amount of choices for the daily is good, because now you can chose which ones to do if you want to do the daily. IF you want to do the daily… yeah I know, for people who feel forced to complete all the options it sounds unbelievable that someone wouldn’t even complete the daily every day.

Imo, the system is fine as it is. And having a higher rank in the leaderboards just means that you’ve spent more time in the game and have completed more achievements… and that’s it. You don’t get anything from it. It doesn’t make you a better, or more skilled player. It just means you’ve spent more time doing stuff in GW2 than those with a lower rank. It can be interesting to see (just to get a general idea of how much other people have done, or how many achievement points the players on the top have), but that’s about it. You’ll get more achievement points as you play, as you do things you like to do. You don’t HAVE TO do everything possible. Especially not if it’s not fun for you to do so (hence the complaining about “having to do it”). Again; you might want to think about some things if you feel forced to get all the achievement points possible.
