Last night I discovered that a member of my guild withdrew ~100-200 g worth of items from the guild bank intended for common use by guild members. This player then promptly left the guild and blocked myself and other guild leaders. He’s been on rocky terms with the guild due to his attitude and I’m not surprised he left. However, the fact he intentionally withdrew a fairly substantial sum of materials feels, to me, as though he stole from the guild. Should I try and report the player, is there an option for this? I am willing to accept the losses, but don’t think such behavior should go unrecognized.

Anet does not get involved in guild issues. You allowed the guild member access to your bank so technically he didn’t steal from your guild. It is a bummer the person did that but there really isn’t anything you can do.

As stated above, you gave them access to the bank to withdraw things. You can’t cry fowl now that they’ve withdrawn things. ANet has no way of knowing what was really happening or why, so they will not get involved.

Sorry.

You could report the player to support, but there won’t be much they can/will do.

Sorry. While what he did was pretty scummy it also doesn’t cross TOS. When you gave him permission to withdraw items from the guild storage that means he can, up to every copper in the guild bank and every item in storage.

The only way to minimize member “theft” is to limit removal of items to officers only or restrict to the first vault and be prepared to occasionally lose all in it.

Reporting him to support will do nothing but waste support’s time for them to tell you that there is nothing they can do.

Another reason why new or bottom of the list guild members shouldn’t be allowed to withdraw from the guild bank.

There are plenty of these players out there that will join guilds that allow any rank to withdraw from the guild bank, take everything or almost everything then leave.

Also theft in GW2 is look at as a player deceiving or lying to get something like gold or an item.

It isn’t look at as theft when a guild allows low ranking members unlimited access to the guild bank, that’s look at as a bad judgment call on whoever set up the different rank permissions.

Sorry.

That’s different from my understanding of ANet’s policy.

ANet won’t act to replace the missing gold. But they will make note of your report. If the player never does anything scummy again, then no, they won’t get punished. On the other hand, if there is another report about another occasion during which that same player does something inappropriate, their past infractions usually matter.

Most of the time, ANet can’t be expected to know or research the background. But in this case, it’s easy for them to see when they took the items from the guild bank, when they quit (but were not kicked from) the guild, and when they blocked the GLs.

It’s not enough to cause ANet to act today. But I believe that it will matter later, if that player falls into similar patterns in their dealings with others.

tl;dr I think it’s worth taking the time to document and report, sticking to the bare facts, i.e. don’t offer your opinion about why. Just provide times/dates and screens. Don’t expect ANet to act (or to tell you if they have), but know that this makes it slightly more likely that your ex-guildie won’t get away with similar behavior down the road.

PS I’m sorry this happened to your guild, OP. In the best case, someone rage-quitting a guild is unpleasant for everyone. It’s all the more horrible when they leave with guild assets (even if they were the primary provider of those items).

PPS Good luck going forward and in the future, consider restricting access more aggressively to those who don’t participate as often or aren’t fully supportive of your community.

Thanks all. I wasn’t expecting much to happen; was mainly just venting my frustration. The bank access permits have been revised now, which is too bad because most of the materials in there were placed by me with the intention of letting other guildies use them when needed. It’s a shame that one person can ruin it for many others.

It’s a shame, but consider it a lesson learned. Karma will get him later. And not the good kind.

I was in one guild once with terrible permissions. As I understand what happened, they had it set up so that every officer could admin the ranks. What that means is they were leaders in fact, if not name. One member emailed an officer and and told him that he was a new officer who had accidentally kicked himself down to member. Instead of checking the story, he promoted him. The guy promptly kicked the leader, the officers and then the members and kept the guild for himself. ANet could do nothing because the guy was promoted by an officer and he did have the permissions to do what he did.

That guild tried to remake itself but fell apart later.
