There is a myriad of awesome, unobtainable items in the game that can not longer be acquired, even beyond the means of old skins on the Trade post. Giving players another chance at these, would really show a lot of character and support for the community who happened to miss out on these items. For example : I was out of town when the Halo and Horns tonic was released a ways back, and missed out on giving my character a Halo, which would suit her so nicely. But this goes beyond that, this is not me saying “GIVE me these items”. Its me saying “Give us a chance to EARN these lost items.”

Guild wars 2 has holidays throughout quite a few months every year, and there is no reason not to take advantage of this to give players a chance to earn old rewards!. For example. Halloween is nearly upon us, Why not allow players a chance to get The Thoughtful and Thoughtless tonics as a reward for 50 Candy corn cobs. Or have the 2012 Halloween Skins as a possible reward for players doing Meta event where you fight the mad king. The only players out there, who do not want others to get the Chainsaw greatsword, or the Scythe staff, are those who already have it. There is no reason not to allow players to have access to lost skins!

It doesn’t have to stop there, It never did, Take things that the economy desperately needs to have filtered from it, like globs of ecto and then in for a list of very old back skin items that don’t exist anymore.
Want that Jet-pack backpack for Halloween? 250 Ecto and 250 Watchwork sprockets at this ghostly Dredge NPC vendor and its yours.
Missed Tequatl’s Meta event where you could get his wings? Step right up, another 250 Ecto and 250 piles of putrid Essence of from this mysterious Ghostly npc that is only around for halloween.
Did you miss out on those Shatterer wings from 2 years back during the Dragon bash? Cough up 250 Ecto and 100 Stabilizing matrix’s to help balance the economy and give players back what they want!

Ultimately there is no reason not to re-introduce these items to the game for players who are desperate to get their hands on them. In fact, you have already basically done this in the form of the Laurel vendor with S1 items. The fact that his Laurel list is so limited, is the only real downfall that it truly has. Out there, is a wealth of lost items, that never see the light of day, items some people may have even salvaged before the wardrobe was released. Help us to share the wealth of history the game has, even if it means pumping more laurels or even spirit shards into a vendor to get them back in players hands, where they belong.

I encourage anyone out there, who has an item which is no longer obtainable to write it on below this post, to share with the community what you want to see back. We got the Legacy pvp armors back, so don’t think this is impossible if we have loud enough voices.

My examples are.

Decorative Molten Jetpack
Wings of the Sunless
Halloween 2012 Skins (there are a lot of them)
Selfless & Thoughtless Potions.
Holographic Shattered Dragon Wing Cover

Why not, the main skin I can think of that is missing now from the gemstore cycles.

Sport Sunglasses from the gemstore.

The Selfless and Thoughtless Potions were (are) available from the Mordrem Researcher (in the Durmand Priory).

These items were offered, again, at a later date; not just once. Perhaps others, in the future, will be as well.

Good luck.

There’s also a bunch of PVP weapon skins that slipped between the cracks and were never properly implemented in PVE (also some armor skins: most of Heavy Scale, parts of Marauder and Studded, and most of the original guild armors).

As far as I’m aware, literally no one in the game has ever had a Destroyer Scythe, for example.

Don’t forget the old LWS1 rewards that we can only “earn” through paying laurels. I would love a way to actually earn those rewards. I want to do something for them, not just gather a login reward every day for 15 days

I’d have to disagree with this idea due to the fact that you’re missing out on a whole other perspective. I.e players who have earned these skins or have had the money to afford them feel a level of prestige amongst the community. Some skins signify ones hard work or even just basic participation in events that took place before newer players started to arrive. Please stop pushing for the idea of “everything for everyone” because that’s not how mmos should work. If I played gw2 at launch and got an exclusive skin during a one time event it means I invested time to obtain this item and would be degrading if it was just handed out to new players. It’s just a matter of loss of prestige.

This is also coming from a player who never had any fancy back wings or jet packs or horn tonics or whatever. I just belive people are entitled to exclusive skins because there is sentimental value behind them.

Some skins should remain exclusive, but not many. Andof the ones that do it should be the ones that required a significant amount of work involved. If it was easy to obtain, or if anyone could get it through shear grind then I don’t think it needs to remain exclusive. Unlike any skins earned through playing the beta weekend, these skins weren’t introduced as “legacy” skins that would show other players how long you have been playing.

And regarding LWS1 rewards in particular. They are already available for laurels. I just want a way to actually earn them in game. I want to work for them like everyone else did and I’m just not given the chance to do so

We are talking about virtual items. It’s really sad if some people “feel a level of prestige” just because they own certain pixels in a video game… In my opinion, every player should have a fair chance to get rare items, at least once a year during events or whatever.

I like that there are some items that are exclusive based on skill, preferred game mode, and loyalty — the last category including rewards for longevity (birthdays), timing (one time event rewards), and purchases (gem shop exclusives the mini some got for buying gems, etc).

As long as these remain a tiny fraction of all skins, I think it’s “fair” in a larger sense, even if it means there are some things I won’t ever get.

From the OP’s list, I think most of things fall into the “acceptable” category, but ANet could return a few to the active reward tables while still maintaining the idea of loyalty or longevity rewards.

In particular:

  • Decorative Molten Jetpack — maybe as a rare drop from relevant fractals
  • Wings of the Sunless — seems better as a right time + right place reward.
  • Halloween 2012 Skins (there are a lot of them) — these were returned as lotto rewards in another Halloween. Seems as if they could do that every year.
  • Selfless & Thoughtless Potions. — also a right time + place reward (to me), although it’s been brought back.
Holographic Shattered Dragon Wing Cover — also a right time + place.

Full disclosure: I don’t have any of the tradeable items on the list above and I don’t have the potions (I do have the two back covers, but I never use them).

There are barely any unobtainable items in the game. There are over 4100 skins in the game and maybe 100 of them who cannot be obtained anymore.
If anything we need more hard and exclusive items to get that become unobtainable forever after a 2-4 week period of time.

The Guild Wars 2 community needs to let go of the “everything for everyone” mentality, in all game types.

bit harsh.. and the reverse is also true. Anyone who believes they’re “gud” because they got something once upon a time needs to get over it.

I’m sure something in-between would suit both anet’s financial model and the communities desire to have stuff that isn’t currently available.

people need to let go of the GW2 equivalent of communism
cosmetics are the GW2 endgame, since stat progression basically does not exist, so naturally there needs to be various difficulties of obtaining said looks from easy (common drops, karma items, gem shop) to legendaries to impossibiles (items you could only get for being there at the right time)

As someone who played all the betas and was present for Halloween 2012, Fire and Frost, and Southsun I can attest that it did not take time or effort to obtain these “exclusive” skins. It took RNG. I played the heck out of the first Halloween because I enjoyed it, but never got one of the Halloween skins. Half of my guild mates got precursors during Southsun, but I did not. And I farmed the Molten dungeon like nobody’s business but still never got the molten backpack. Getting these items does not mean you played longer or better than anyone else, only that the die came up for you. Furthermore, since many of these skins are purchasable on the trading post, there isn’t even any prestige involved. So what, exactly, is the point of denying people the ability to earn these in game?

I accept that this is your opinion, but please don’t presume to speak for everyone who has one or more of these exclusive skins. I’ve got quite a few (for example celebration hat, holographic shattered wings, tequatl wings, mini Mr Sparkles and others) and I’d love to see them available for other players to earn.

I actually like it when I see other people using the same skins I do. And I feel really bad when someone asks me how they can get an item and I have to tell them they can’t. I don’t see why they should miss out on the oppertunity to earn it just because it might make someone else feel special that they happened to be playing when it was available.

Ideally I’d like to see Season 1 and all the other tempoary content come back as permanent content so everyone can play it and get the rewards that way, but if that’s not going to happen I’d like to see them added to new content.

The Mordrem Bloom event was a start, but that had the same problem as the original methods in that it was tempoary, and on top of that the events were full of bugs so even people who did participate couldn’t get the rewards they wanted.
