[Request] Option to block people below X AP
I think this is a poor idea to solve spam. Also, it would be easily abused for other purposes.
What other purposes are you referring to?
I like the idea of a system like that. This way Gold sellers would be completely kittened up.
Although it might cause trouble with new players, but for that you could add something like an option for new players (below lets say 200/300 AP) to send a request to people they want to chat with. If that person accepts the request of the new player he can speak freely. But if the player sees that the request is of a player called “xhxhfjjhhj fkkdo” with 17 AP he knows that he better not accept it
Having this kind of chat-block as an OPTION for people to decide what they want would be great so people who absolutely dont want this stpid gold-seller spam can live a peaceful life without having 5-10 whispers per hour standing in LA or Hotm.

This would be an excellent addition. Preserving the friendly community we’ve come to love while shutting out the gold sellers for good.
Also if I was a new player to any game I would not have a problem with such a system since it prevents chat abuse by gold-sellers and I would only benefit from this after playing a few hours .

I’d like to see an option to close Whisper to anyone not on my Friends list or in 1 of the Guilds I belong to, anyone else would go directly to game mail, which I’ve proven I can ignore for weeks on end
i made the mistake of walking into Divinity Reach on Wednesday night. Bam gold seller straight away followed by several more. Same again last night gold sellers bombarding me.
Blocked and reported even though are always from the same source.
You guys really get that many? I had one gold seller PM the other night, none since, and think I see maybe 2 a week. I do visit LA, DR, and HotM regularly.
If an account is hacked and used by gold sellers, then this won’t help. Personally, I see it more of a problem than a solution. Isn’t there enough elitism BS already?
This is such a good idea. Make it a reward for reaching 500 ap to be able to whisper…
The Heart of the Mists (PvP Lobby) is just constantly filled with gold sellers.
If you initiate a whisper conversation with a <500 ap character, they should be able to respond. (AKA your neighbor friend finally downloads guildwars2, and you can whisper back and forth)
Also, ban the typical websites from map chat, resulting in an immediate chat suppression, automatic reporting, or just not posting at all (things like gw2bank.com or whatever)
Every gold seller I have ever received a spam from in the last 3 years had 17AP. Set the minimum for whispers to 25 or 30 AP. Maybe requiring the completion of the personal story to level 10, people would still be able to “say” and “map” chat if they need help. Maybe it won’t get them all but at least the majority.
This wouldn’t work. Gold sellers would just get AP the cheapest most efficient way possible until they barely beat the cap.
if they can’t whisper enough people they’ll just switch to map and say chat. I personally don’t see it as an improvement if map or say chat is filled with gold seller spam that right now is going out to individual people. You’ll have to block all of them each time you go to an area where they are, not just the ones that directly whisper you.
ANet may give it to you.

Honest question here,
Can you see the map and say chat of someone youve blocked? I havent really used the block function enough to know.

IF you block someone, you can’t see any chat they say, doesn’t matter what channel it’s in.
So, if a gold spammer below the AP threshold wouldnt gain mutch by switching to map or say chat.
I would definitely want a way to opt out of a system like this. I tend to like helpfing new players and would rather have to manually block gold spammers than miss a new player’s call for assistance.
My guess is, based on how many times in a row you’ll get hit by gold seller whispers when you’re in the mists, is that they are using stolen credit cards and they buy multiple accounts with each one. What I think they do to avoid chat suppression is rotate quickly between accounts when messaging. So if a gold seller has 3 accounts, he’ll whisper on accounts 1, then 2 then 3 then back to 1.
So (made up numbers here to illustrate a possible problem with blocking all whispers) If you have 1, 2, or 3 gold sellers in the PvP lobby, each with 3 accounts and they’re whispering individual people, each gold seller is only reaching one person at a time. Block all whispers on low AP accounts so they switch to map chat and now you have 3 or 6 or 9 accounts all spamming map chat right after each other. To clean up map chat so you can’t see gold seller spam you’ll need to block all those accounts each time you go to that area and each time they get new accounts. imo, it will be a lot more annoying to do that than to block the whispers that reach you.

I think that I am missing something. I thought the idea was that all of those gold seller messages, regardless of channel, would be blocked automatically? Sure I would see it if I opted out of the autoblock function, but then it would be my choice. Then again, it seems possible that there would be less spam if they know that most players, by default, couldnt see the messages.
I think the idea has potential, but would need to be handled very carefully.
im from gandara eu…and in the last 3 years i recieved a total of 3 mails and about 10ish whispers… and all that was around at the same time.
last time i recieved those was aages ago

True, but I was thinking that the OP was suggesting a new, optional whisper block only on low AP accounts to block gold sellers but allow new people to still ask questions in map or say chat and to be seen by accounts that auto block.

At least it wont distract me during pvp matches. Half my gold seller spam is while I am in a pvp match.
“Give us an option to ignore all whispers/mails sent by people above a certain AP threshold.”
:)
Gold sellers typically steal accounts, so an ap threshold will not help you. Where are you getting all this gold seller spam? I get some ….. about 1/1000 of the spamming for guilds though.

The goldsellers I get whispered by are all fresh throwaway accounts with less than 50 AP.
There is no simple solution to this problem. Your idea wouldn’t solve the issue since those who are cheating within the system likely will find a way around your clever behavior.

I made a key runner the other week and checked the human starter instance. I found 2 of them standing off to the side in there. Presumably whispering to accounts.
Edit: Malediktus has a theory that the whispering accounts are hiding in the starter instances and that accounts (with more normal names?) hang out in the Mists. Those in the Mists collect names and send them to the hiding accounts to whisper to players.
