Hi there.

I just wanted to point out something not related to the recent patch.

ANet has started implementing a mechanic that prevents you from accidentally using skills that require a target e.g. Flame Burst on staff Ele or the blast gyro tag on scrapper (just to name 2)

Now many skills that have a similar nature don’t have this attached yet and I wanted to ask if it’s possible to “fix that” and if not why.

Such skills include:

  • almost every offensive signet
  • “On my Mark!”
  • Utility Goggles toolbelt
  • Technobabble

That would be cool
Cheers

It would be nice that “on my mark” gives either the error “no legit target” or functions with auto-targeting

The thing with warrior skills is, that this class is the archetype for accessibility, that’s why most of the skills have a secondary effect that does something useful even if the skill doesn’t land. Shouts fall into that category too (heal for example).
And on topic of failsafe target-requiring-skills: i personally dont like to see more of that, as i think skill does not mean pressing the buttons that are available (as it’s already the case for a few classes), but knowing when and why to do that. So if you fail to land an ability, yes, you fail to land that ability and you can get better by trying not to do that. If things like this do continue to get implemented, there’s nothing stopping people from wanting out-of-range attacks to also not be castable like in other mmos.. Some things make the GW combat unique and that’s good and means not having (many of) those failsafe implementations (for now..).

I would agree if targetting wasn’t such a pain in the posterior organ. I mean, how often have I selected a target only to completely and without intent lose the target. I don’t know why it is, even if I have the target marked, and press T to select that target, I lose focus in less than 5 seconds. This is usually not a problem on the warrior, though. But sometimes I choose a target, and then leap to death because by the time I use rush, I’ve lost focus, or I waste a shout by calling “on my mark” when I lost focus again.

Don’t tell me you’ve never rushed into the lava behind the Grawl Shaman, because you call a target and can hardly do anything without losing focus.

Addendum: I think the problem is camera position. As a warrior I’m constantly moving, and attacking, and turning, and strafing. I have my mouse to move my camera, and repositioning the camera removes targetting 95% of the time

yes, i also fell into that lava. And i agree; it’s a targeting problem. So it would be more productive for Anet to work on that instead of trying to fix things by altering the skills in a way that kind of works against their design philosophy.

A lot of skill have side effects (traited or not) that make it have sense for you to use them without a target,

Also, that would be a step back, if you use a skill when theres not target its your fault, you should pay more atention, its a very small but important point that make the skill check for not spamming skills senselless.

Not to sure if I like that, I now and then use rocket charge as and Waterfield as a get away of harms way with a little heal. If it was required I wouldn’t be able to do that, it is bad enough that I forget about auto target sometimes.

It peeves me how you can use the mesmer greatsword auto-attack without a target (it does nothing), while the druid staff auto-attack requires a target and just spams the screen with big red text. Some consistency across similar skills would be appreciated.
