So I’ve read various things in numerous places on this topic, including these forums, but as there is no single clear summary anywhere I can find and I find the results of my searching to be questionable at best, I’m hoping somehow can bring me up to speed.

I know this is probably seen by many as a dead horse, but for those of us who have been out of the loop…is it the case that someone like myself who paid 80$ for the Digital Deluxe version before release, will have to pay another 50$ for the Expansion, which for those doing so now who had not bought the full game previously, puts them where I would be, but at a savings of 80$…for coming late to the party and not supporting things before initial release?

I’ve read that people who already owned the full game would be compensated om some way, but my research seems to indicate this is limited to an additional character slot, which is valued at far less than 80$. Is this accurate or have I missed something important?

I pre-purchased the original game because I thought it deserved being supported and I was considering doing the same for the expansion, but unless I am missing something the math just doesn’t work out. Can someone please summarize what the situation is in this regard? I’ve searched the News section but I don’t see anything on this topic.

Thank-you kindly in advance!

If you want to play HoT content you need to pay the $50. No matter what version of the base game you purchased or when, if you want to play HoT you need to pay.

The character slot was equal to the 10$ the game have been on sale for the last two or three times in its life time over the years.
So its not what you paid 3 years ago its the value they had for their product close to news of expansion is coming.

In all fairness if they had announced the game ftp before they could have avoided giving us even that.

You cant have searched much since its still on the first page on heart of thorns section

The short answer to your question is yes: you have summarized the situation correctly. However there are other ways of looking at it.

You paid for the deluxe version. They are not including deluxe version, only the base game. So really it’s only 50 dollars of original content.

The price of gw2 has been falling for years. Last December it was around 10 bucks. At that time did you feel like you were being cheated out of 70 bucks? And given the 10 dollar current price tag for gw2, a free character slot IS actually fair compensation.

You should really be glad they’re giving the base game away free with the expansion. This removes hoops new players have to jump through and should in theory keep the game alive and vibrant over the years to come.

Oh and fyi, they have also stated that for future xpacs they plan on giving all PAST xpacs AND the core game to new players free of charge along with the NEW xpac. So you can really either jump on the bandwagon now, or wait 5 years and get a hundred dollars in savings with a bunch of xpacs but miss out on 5 years of play.

on the bright side, that game you bought for $80 three years ago, its still populated and you can still play it free of charge….imo wasn’t all that bad of a deal in hindsight.

but yeah if you want all the new stuff its going to be $50

Thank-you for the responses, though they don’t answer my main question – which is whether the character slot is the only difference for those who already own the full game.

Valuing the game at 10$ given the amount of time it has been out does make sense in that light, but if they chose to reward ‘early adopters’ in some additional way it would also make sense, hence my question. If they haven’t done so, then that’s the way it is, just wanted to make sure it was the case so I can make a properly informed decision.

Linken – I did find that 135 page thread, but did not wade through the thousands of posts there, no. A stickied post where the important information was not thusly buried is what I was looking for. Thanks for saving me from sorting through all that though, much appreciated!

Their new expansion business model is that with each succeeding expansion, the old expansion(s) and the core game is folded in it for free for the benefit of people who are buying the game for the first time.

This has the benefit of not creating a paywall that new players can’t easily overcome, especially as more expansions come out. Too high a paywall and new players will refuse to even try the game leading to a declining population as old players leave and few new players start.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Agreed. I’d forgotten how long it had been out, it does make sense given that fact. Thank-you for making sure I had the facts straight!

It’ll probably be a mute point in any case, it appears my characters may be missing…though I’m hoping my account has simply become desynched from the various out-of-game tools since it’s been so long since I last played. Will know soon enough once the download finishes.

Thanks-you again all for the information.

Yes indeed, it makes perfect sense in that respect. I’ll have to do more reading on what HoT will bring to the table.

This: “The short answer to your question is yes: you have summarized the situation correctly.”

Was the kind of clarity I was looking for, and it was posted after I’d already written the response you’re referring to. It’s quite clear now, thank-you again.

But we did answeryour question, if you would have been able to get more we would have said so.
