Returning Player Questions
Living World Season 1 is currently not available. It may become available in some form some day. For now, though, it is history that passed while you were somewhere else.
Season 2 you can experience. You can either pay 200 gems/episode or you can ask someone who has the chapters open to take you along. The latter lets you see and participate in the story, but you cannot get the achievements.
There are also the new areas added with the progression of the LS. They are open to anyone of level 80. Well, I suppose one can go before 80, but it would be hard.
Stay tuned on some big announcement on the 24th.
The most recent chapter in Living Story will be available to you permanently when you log in, but any previous chapters in Season 2 will be locked if you didn’t log in when they were the most recent; it will cost 200 gems to unlock each chapter. Any chapter can be played and replayed if it’s unlocked.
That aside, you’ll still be able to access any open world content in Dry Top and Silverwastes regardless of whether you’ve got the Story chapters unlocked.
If you have any characters that you created before the April 2014 patch, please resist the urge to delete them, for your own sake. Any new characters you create will have all their major traits locked until that character performs a task specific to a trait, or the character pays to unlock it for a number of skillpoints and some money. The trade-off of this is that you can freely relocate trait points, so any “grandfathered” characters (pre-April 2012) get the best of both worlds.

Bob, not exactly sure what you mean – My characters would be from back in 2012 (if they are still there. I use a game save manager and IIRC it shows a GW2 save but I had to re- download the game last pm and haven’t fired it up yet. I understand about LW season 1 and 2 now but do have a question – will that content (from this point forward ) still be available to me as long as I log in when I finally get to it story/plot wise?
Character creation – not sure exactly what you mean by traits are locked – (well I understand but what does this serve and/or what sort of traits are locked and what is required to unlock them). Also how do I benefit by keeping my current characters? My characters are only like level 15 -20 or so IIRC. Perhaps I will keep mine and also start a new one or two and see what I like best.
Game saves – like profiles for single player games?
GW2 is an online game.. you don’t (need to) store account details locally. If you do, it’d just be username/password.
The stuff you downloaded is the games client (or a couple of years worth of patches at least).
Edit:
Gives this a read to refresh your memory on how to play (and probably surpass the average player)

All the current content will be available. Any Living World chapters (Season Two) for which you did not log in will require 200 gems to unlock, after which they will be fully available to your account forever. Meanwhile you can experience the (Season Two) story with anyone willing to start an instance for you even if you have not unlocked it yourself, but you won’t get the rewards or be able to do the achieves or interact with objects, and the instance starter will control dialogue choices and speed of reading them.
Characters created before last April’s trait change are “grandfathered” in. To open traits you will only need to apply trait points you get through leveling, as in the old system. Newer characters must either go out in the world to do tasks to unlock the traits, or pay in gold + skill points. Many of the tasks to open a trait require you to be 20 levels higher than when you first get access to it, so a ton of new alts just aren’t getting more than the minimum necessary traits if any. That’s why people are telling you not to delete the older alts.
The fall damage trait for necromancers requires doing the PvP JP, by the way. I spent gold and skill points on that. Because no, just no.
I know my client was not on my HDD and that along with dozens of GB was d/l last night but aren’t alt profiles saved localy as well as on Arenanet servers – if not then perhaps all my save entails is username/password. Either way I should have access to my old alts. Unless there is a cap to how many I can have I will keep them all.
Thanks to all of you for the help. Do you know if there are still a lot of newbs populating the early part of the game? It would be great not having to do all by myself cause nobody appropriate is around.
anet doesnt store account data locally. It’d be way to easy to hack, and give yourself 5000000 eternity’s (or whatever).
All that’ll save locally is username/password (which doesn’t sound too great from a security perspective).
If you have multiple accounts (assuming thats what you mean by “old alts”) then you will still be able to log in (unless they got perma’d).
There is still plenty of fresh players in the game to do stuff with.

It doesn’t actually need to store the password either…

Gee, if only there were some one-way conversion you could do on a password to check it without storing the actual string… hmm
And then how does he enter the password into gw2 after say— applying a hash function?
GG smart kitten .
Though this isn’t the reason I’d hesitate to trust it.. I don’t trust 3rd party applications with passwords in general.

Well quite some people are returning, and of course there is the megaserver
You’ll like the concept, even though you do not know what I’m talking about.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
FWIW I use game save manager to store saves on my NAS or 2nd SSD and not have to keep the game always on hand (when re-installed GSM will recognize the new game location and restore saves appropriately. This way I am not screwed if Steam craps out and loses a cloud save or drive crash. Perhaps all GSM recorded was the log-in screen who knows. All I know is that it is listed in my save profile folder(s) and on GSM site as a supported game. As far as password saving , there are plenty of programs with heavy encryption that allow you to save username and passwords – programs such as keepass do a great job.
Thanks for all the help everyone- hopefully I can fire it back up tonight and see for myself what I still have and how the game appeals to me in its current state.
