I had a friend ask me what he would have to do to get up to speed if he retruned to GW2. He started laughing after I told him what he had to do.

Back Piece – run fractals to get a vial of mist essence
Rings – run fractals to get pristine fragments (10 days, average 2 per day)
Amulets – do dailies for laurels (20 to 30 days)
Accessories – do dailies for laurels (60 to 80 days), run guild missions

Even if you wanted to catch up; just looking at what you’d have to do would make you want to quit before even starting. If you multiplied this by the amount of characters you wanted to gear up; you’d go insane.

Catch up to what? You can do anything in exotics that you can do with all of that. The stat difference is minimal.

He doesn’t have to do a single one of those things.

Just stop.

Tell him that if he is ok with full exotics, this game is one of the best MMOs on the market.

However, if he wants a full ascended set…don’t even start trying. It’s absolutely ridiculous atm. They say that they’ll add more methods of attaining them, but as of right now STAY AWAY.

The rest of the game is good. The ascended gear acquisition is asinine.

just ignore ascended. i only picked up my amulet because I had the laurels, but now that I see how ridiculous the accessories and back is going to be (tbh I think the rings are fairly attainable) I am giving up until we have actual easy ways to obtain them.

If you try going for a full set right now, it will make you quit. And I’m serious…as much as I love the game, these new currencies are putting me off in a big way.

It matters in WvW. The rings did not matter that much at first, but with each addition, the gap between a full set of exotics vs a full set of ascended gets wider.

Whoops…nevermind….just saw your last paragraph after this posted. Yeah, I get that. If you’re going to make another tier, at least make them reasonable. I agree with that.

WvW. And the fact that BiS gear is not supposed to take 2-3 months of continuous play to achieve…on one character.

Especially in this game.

He can use rare first then run dungeon to get descent gears which are exotic items then rum fractals or 20daily for ascended..

Tell him how he needs to slave himself to a big guild.

All these people saying that the stats on Ascended don’t matter will be the first ones to complain when the new dungeons come out requiring Agony resistance on a full set of ascended to even SEE the new content. They’ve already said it’s coming.

As it’s been said before, he doesn’t NEED any of that stuff to play the game. I went in to WvW last weekend on a level 12 elementalist and still racked up a bunch of kills.

You got nothing to fear, unless you wish to fear it. I had friends who went on month long hiatus of games, and they come back just fine. You could “grind” for Ascended, so you could just go “I don’t care about ascended” and get it slowly without really worrying about it. It’s up to how you approach it.

And no, ascended is not needed in WvW. WvW is too dynamic to be affected the amount of stats ascended gives.

Today was by far the busiest day I have seen on GW2 in forever. On my server (Blackgate) zones were constantly in overflow because so many people were on.

It’s pretty obvious that a lot of people have returned or are playing a lot more then they used to. I think the fact that they finally eased the loot restrictions a little have motivated people to play again.

Guild Wars 2 was mad busy today. Plenty of people playing. Only a small percentage of them feel they MUST have ascended gear. So basically you lied to your friend. Good job. lol

I’m a returning player and yea, I completely understand your friend not wanting to come back. I didn’t really look into what was currently going on and what people “need” to do to get better stuff but it’s nothing if not disheartening to find out.

Even starting a second character feels like a waste because after the slog to 80 you’re just forced to re-do everything again for weeks on end.

Catch up to whom? No one has the Accessories not too many have the amulets. As for rings and back items they are not hard to get at this point in the game its more of a factor of time. What is the rush to catch up to these ppl who what are getting all that loot because they have gear that not even a full rarity level stronger (greens vs yellow vs exotic each one we can call a rarity level)? Only in one event in this game ppl asked gear that fractal and that more about AR (you could have all ascended trikes and it could all be max MF for all that it maders in high level fractal.) Ecto are falling in price to a point so back items are going to become very easy to get soon.
So come back you got something to work for and try to enjoy it there are ppl here that want to play and do events with you.

Don’t be naive. Its starting to get noticable. Even with a +5 stat differential. We now have 2 rings, amulet, 2 accessories available. Its mounting up. Soon, you’ll have an entire gearest. Multiple whatever the differential is by how many pieces and I garuntee you my critical chance, power, toughness will be way higher than yours.

To the OP: Yeah, theres a lot to do. Im TRYING to ignore the innate human need to stay on top of the curve. Its hard. Maybe I can maybe I can’t ignore it. Either way, I know this isnt the game I wanted to buy. Its changed into every other MMO out there. Its a great game, but its no longer a unique snowflake.

I just started playing and I have no idea what any of that means….

Ascended items are a long-term goal to slowly work towards while you have fun playing the game.

If your friend is not having fun actually playing the game, and if getting ascended items is the only satisfaction he is going to get from the game at all, then he is right not to play.

Sounds like your friend was bored of the overall game in the first place which means he might not be able to ever come back to guild wars 2. I’m in the same boat at the moment i want this game to become something as enjoyable as the souls games or Wow was having me playing whenever i have free time with no end to the fun in sight. So I’m on these forums talking and offering suggestions but unfortunately i can’t seem to get into any of the updates. Hopefully the WvW one will get me involved again as most of the PvE content has been pretty lackluster in my eyes. Of course i don’t run fractals/dungeons and Spvp died within the first month because my team left so i guess I’m limited on how i experience content at the moment.

Until then I will take that statement like I take all statements on the internet.

I’ve also just joined the game (well two days ago), as I needed a break from the hardcore gear grind that is WoW.

I like the idea of working towards an end game top tier armor/weapon set. I enjoy knowing that I can take my time working towards the set(s) and yet without them, still be competitive ingame.

Having a blast so far in game, and loving my Guardian something fierce. Although I am still getting used to actually having to pay attention in game. Dodging and being aware of the surroundings is something that doesn’t happen often in WoW.
