To all fans of GW2;
Like a lot of people, i bought the game when it came out supper hyped about a new MMO that isn’t like all others, enjoyed the kitten out of leveling, thought it was amazing. But i soon became very lost and overwhelmed on what i should do now that i’m 80 to progress my character. Maybe why im lost is i need this question answered, what is progression in GW2? Since its not a typical MMO progression system, or alteast one im use too. I just want to know that im using my time correctly or wisely. Now what type of feed back do i want, i want the PvE side of feed back, im not really crazy about the PvP quite yet, maybe later, but if i could get some guidance and reasons i should be doing “X”.

Thank you for your time!

Well, the special thing about GW2 is that you can reach the max equip quite easy.
Well okay, there’s still ascended equip, but it costs 50 times the amount of exotic equipment and exotics are good enough for most game contents.

So after you reached Lv80 and got your exotics, there’s not much progression left. Of course you can get better by trying different builds and so on, but that’s just no real progression per se.

The only progression after that I can think of are fractal stuff (fractal level -> 50, infusions, agony resistance) but that’s only for fractals and not needed for everything else.

The real “end game content” is collecting skins and achievements (or skins that you get for completing achievements, lol) via dungeons, end game maps (dry top: weapons, silverwastes: armor) and so on, so only cosmetic changes.

However, the xpack Heart of Maguuma will bring a new kind of progression, a horizontal one: the masteries. Basically you can “train” different abilities like gliding, precursor crafting, using jungle mushrooms for your benefit and so on. This way, new content doesn’t make your old equipment useless – you can simply train a new mastery to get access to new abilities (like in Metroid or Zelda games)

This is not so easy to answer, as everyone wants different things. But I’ll tell you what I’d put on the ‘do list’ for a new lvl 80 character.

  • Gear exotic, consider Ascended jewellery if enough laurels.
  • Finish story if not yet done.
  • Explore the World.
  • Take part in the current activities (for now Dry Top and Silverwastes)
  • Check if there are collections or achievements that can be done.
  • Do dungeons if the opportunity knocks.
  • Try to save up some gold…

I have already maxed all crafts, so I am not doing that. But for someone who hasn’t that is something to do. Especially if Ascended gear is wanted.

Thanks all for the directions. I need to work on my mindset and expectations, then i can enjoy the journey more.

Hope I’m not too late, but in my personal opinion regarding character progression is rather personal goals.

Think of something you wish to acquire, and work on it.

Want map completion, do it part of your character progression. It works if you place yourself personal timers, lets say, if a “big” map it took you an hour to complete, now to complete a “big” map in less than the hour.

While I did the ascended armor, I gave myself the goal to do it in a month crafting. It did help a lot to get a high goal, knowing there is a “turn in date”, and constantly trying to improve my way to get the materials/farming them.

Think it works, but can’t prove it, to work on more than a thing at a time but that they give synergy between themselves. Currently testing it doing PvP. I want to achieve dragon rank. But it sounds like a big goal, so I ended up dividing it in small task. Currently is-> get full Arah armour via PvP for my ele that I’m leveling. It sounds more plausible and it directly impacts my main goal. This last idea I place is a beast of itself and it would required an entire entry by itself. So I’m placing the basic concept.

Hope this helps you out. Your end game and character progression is dictated by you and your times. Enjoy the game and have fun.

Thanks ELBuenDavs.
I think my current goal is to finish the personal story. Then i think its to do some map completions. Then i think its to get back in to the dungeons to buy the armor. Then and maybe at the same time do some crafting.

Yep, like others have said just find something you want and go for it. It might feel a little weird not having an answer as to why you want that thing, but pursuing it does give you something to do. Here are some suggestions:

- Full exotic gear, with runes and sigils supporting your play-style
- Full ascended gear after that
- 100% map completion
- Legendary weapon (new ones coming in the expansion!)
- Lots and lots of achievements

When the expansion comes, they will be trying to add even more long-term goals for players to pursue both while leveling and after hitting the cap. Keep your eyes open for anything that interests you, and once you see something you want, go for it!

I would also add joining a guild that suits you, if you don’t have one already. There’s much more content to be enjoyed with a group friends in addition to the individual goals.

Live, learn, level up.
