So I Pre purchased GW2 and I was overly hyped up about it, played all the beta weekends and a few of the stress tests, but when the game launched i played maybe 3-4 days and I just wasn’t having much fun. I have since not played it at all and I am just getting around to re-installing it after a PC upgrade. Is there anything new I should know about and what can I do to motivate myself/ make the game fun again ? thanks in advance

Dunno, what was your major disappointment? What do you think is fun?

Too bad you missed the Halloween event though.

I just didn’t seem as engrossed in the game as I thought I would be. Don’t get me wrong I love MMO’s but I just felt that GW2 was a bit lackluster, however I want to play it if that makes sense.

The game has always been fun for me from the pre 3 days head start.
tbh if you did not have fun back then, then you prob wont have fun now.

Also once you get past lvl 20 it gets a lot better,as you have unlocked most skills besides the elite ones.

Dunno. Did you let yourself get overhyped? That is always a giant buzzkill. But I can’t really help with getting you “engrossed” in the game without knowing what you like to do in games that make you want to come back

Before halloween I never played for more than an hour at a time, because I always got bored after an hour or so, but found the game entertaining enough to play casually

The halloween event has recaptured my interest though and it also helps that I’ve finally got the hang of playing my elementalist effectively

From what I can gather it seems the game becomes more fun the longer you play it . Too bad I missed what seemed like a fun Halloween event :/ . but I’m about 40% downloaded just now so I’ll wait till its done and then ill give it a blast before I go to sleep and then in the morning I’ll pick up where I left off. Anyone got preferences on which class is the most fun to play, personally I picked and engineer and it was quite good. Only others I’ve played are thief and warrior.

tbh you play what you like best.

I like the ranger for wvw,but since the nerf he’s not so good in pve imo.
I like my guardian for farming mats.

Also i’v just started a mes,and tbh i hated the mes in gw,but in gw 2 i’m finding her real fun.
you have to think fast on ya toes with a mes.
but tbh it all boils down to what class you fancy playing, everyone will have there own opinion.

Nothing really new since you left except a Halloween event. But just log in and play and see what you think.

I will say first that I do really like GW2, and have no regrets about buying it.

That said, doowak, I will say that I kind of did the same thing. I played during the beta but until recently had not really started to enjoy myself. I think one of the reasons why I was struggling was because I am used to a much more “directed” style of play.

The MMO’s I’ve played in the past have always had a clear-cut “quest” approach where you are told “Go here, kill that, talk to the NPC for your reward, and repeat”. I’m not knocking this. I’m actually very comfortable with this style of play. It feels like an old, broken-in slipper. But GW2 is an entirely different animal. When I first started I felt kind of lost. It was a bit overwhelming. It felt like there was too much going on all at once, and I was sort of paralyzed into not knowing what to do first.

Recently I just decided to stop worrying about what I should be doing and just start exploring. I look at where I am on the map, and wherever I see the closest undiscovered waypoint, vista, point of interest, or heart is where I head. Along the way I encounter dynamic events and participate in those, too. And of course I hit every gathering node I can between me and my closest objective. I haven’t even bothered doing much of my personal story missions. I was frustrated by them earlier on, so I decided to leave them for now and come back to them later.

Obviously, this style of play isn’t going to be for everyone. But it is working for me. It helps me to filter out the “option overkill” that makes me feel frustrated.

Note that my issues are not criticisms of the game. There is nothing wrong with the way GW2 is set up. The things that frustrated me are just issues personal to ME, and not the fault of the game. I just had to find my own way to approach things that allowed me to work within the framework the designers had set down and still have fun in my own way.

Hopefully you’ll experiment and find what works for you. There’s a lot to like in GW2.

@ OP- tbh Nothing has changed; so far now there are more DEs in the game compare to during launch…. and that’s about all that’s been added. A few things have been modded as well, but if you’ve only played a week of GW2 then that wouldn’t really matter to you I think.

It’s still the same old " you finish a content, you move on". “Maybe revisit it sometimes in the future when you have no more content to play”. But I’m pretty sure most players who quit quit because they got sick of the combat mechanics; I’m not sure if that’s the case for you (OP) as well, but if it is then I think you’d find yourself lose interest in about a few weeks again. If not, then I’m really glad that you came back to join us! (Upcoming Nov 15 patch will release a lot more new “contents” into the game!).
