Revitalize GW2 with Consoles
Hehehe- I just moved my PC and bigscreen to the coffee table- and kick back on my couch-no console required!
I have a pet- I am a Ranger.
I have Avatar of Balthazar- I am a Dervish.
They looked at it, and decided before launch it was a no go. Any patch on a console has to be checked my Microsoft/Sony before it is shipped. Apparently they also charge for every patch on consoles(don’t know if this is true, it’s something I read on the forum).
This would also involve a lot of work to code the game to work on consoles. Money and time they don’t have given the current lack of content, this would be a really bad idea.

Take PC.
Connect to TV near a sofa of your choice.
Sorted.

I thought about doing that but convenience and lack of clutter won out…plus I can see my dogs just wrecking my wires unless I go all wireless. My wife is a gamer so she’s very supportive of my gaming hobby…but I throw the flatscreen, tower, and accessories on the coffee table and I will get the “are you kitten serious” look real quick.
not to say I don’t envy your creativity
Seeing mmo’s like DCUO, NW, and FFXIV being played on consoles, recent cross-network play enthusiasm/opportunity, and my personal experience on the X1ESO, I hope Anet crunches some numbers to see if this is worthwhile for Guild Wars.

A lot has changed in technology, management, direction, growth (success), and vision for GW2 and the industry since 2012. X1 wasn’t even in the market yet.
and when you compare the pc success of GW2 in comparison to the other mmo’s that did move to console/cross network well it’s pretty safe to say (assume) if DC Universe and ESO can do it financially/technical, I believe it’s well within Anet possibility and gain.

But, you have to realize from a business point of view:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
The PC version works just fine for now, no need for upgrades to a market that is getting more than enough business from other gaming labels.
(Move the love seat to the PC, it’s smaller- Lazy Boy is having a sale right now!)

There is a difference between being made to go on consoles, and being ported to consoles. Some are done well, other are horrible.

From a business perspective more customers the better, always. I haven’t been on GW2 in some months, but when I left I wouldn’t exactly call it healthy either. Sure a bump from HoT, and recent news/marketing from Anet.
GW2 is still a 4yr old mmo in a bloated pc only market, an offset of console/cross network players for WvW and filling shards for meta’s is a win. Add that to the f2p option, “esport”, and a whole new demographic to purchase xpacs/cash shop support minimizes the investment needed to pursue this.

Yup, I agree.
No need to sit at a desk to play this, I play from a sofa. All you need is a spare sofa and a coffee table. I place my keyboard on my knee and my mouse works perfectly fine next to me on the sofa.
As for taking this to the consoles. It would be nice but probably not worth it in the long run. Maybe when virtual reality gaming is a thing Anet could look at taking it there…..

I wonder what makes it worth it for the games that have been successful doing this? What is taken in consideration for a large decision like porting a pc game to console, especially for the mmo’s that didn’t even come close to GW2 brand, and financial success in the first few years.
It’s easy to say “if studios like Daybreak and Zenimax can put in the financial and technical resources to do it, and gain, why not Anet?” but I’m sure there’s more to it.

Well in the cases of Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasy both franchises came from console history. Well sure Elder Scrolls started on PC but they have def had exp in the console market. Final Fantasy, there is no argument there that Squaresoft are well and truly experienced at making games for consoles, they are true masters.
As far as Anet and the GW franchise goes I just don’t kid myself on that front. Let’s face it even GW2 was new ground for them. Being it’s their first true MMO and even then when you look at the map/world it is still sort of instanced, it is not truly “open”.
They are still behind the ball with having the game up to scratch at this point. Ever since launch they have been scrambling and making revisions to get it to where they would like it, always catching up. This is evident with the recent pulling of resources from legendaries to current game/live as well as the next expansion.
My reply simply comes down to the fact it seems their resources are stretched to the limit as it is right now. Sure there is def money to be made from the console market and new players could indeed be obtained. Just right now with how the game is and the state in which their resources are stretched, I just can’t see it being viable atm. Don’t get me wrong I am not against it as I am a console player myself and do have the Elder Scrolls games and FF14. I am just being a realist here.

I don’t know about other console MMOs but Elder Scrolls Online was built from the ground up to be compatible with consoles. Even though it ended up launching on PC over a year ahead of consoles they were planning it from the start so they built the game to be compatible.
And even then the results were mixed according to some people, some decisions such as the absence of text chat on consoles were very controversial. And consoles have to wait a few weeks to get updates because they have to be approved by Microsoft and Sony.
It’s often very obvious when a game was built for one format and then ported over to another as an after-thought because a lot of things (usually the UI) just don’t work well. It’s a matter of doing the best you can with what you’ve got to work with rather than building a system that makes sense with the technology and control system you’ve got.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Consoles are just cheap AMD PC’s and GW2 runs pretty “eh” at best on anything cheap and AMD. Doubt it will happen.
Yeah, not only would GW2 not run at all on consoles but you can just plug your PC into your TV and be good to go. There’s no reason to ask for console compatibility.

How in blue blazes do people play sprawled on a couch with a precariously balanced keyboard and a mouse on an uneven surface without killing their backs or necks? Or both? I’m boggled.
I need a solid surface, an ergonomic chair, padded foam or gel under my wrists, and a monitor close enough to see through reading glasses (darn eye doctor telling me “congrats, you grew up, now you need different glasses for different distances, one pair won’t cut it unless it’s graduated”) — I seriously cannot imagine effective PC game play without good back and arm support.
People want to play with controllers. I don’t get it either
You can also get a table to put the KB/M on which works all right. I like a normal desk, personally, and don’t get how someone could use a controller with this game.

I was thinking of an ingame console (command line) for some reason. Dumb me.
I hope it stays on PC. Coming from FF14, it was terrible. NPCs had to be moved on some things had to be changed to keep the performance up. Or in short: Consoles sucked so bad they literally had to place NPCs in a different location to keep acceptable framerates on the PS3. Also, the chat is usually dead, because nobody want to plug in a keyboard (“else they would’ve bought a PC/play at the PC”). In FF14 it worked somewhat, mostly because that game is slow and awkward when it comes to combat. You wait 2.5 seconds for a black mage skill, yes, meanwhile you can turn your tank, pardon, your player character around and stuff, but switching trough different layers of skillbars just because of limited buttons was kinda hard. I tried it myself. GW2 is much better when it comes to combat. I need my mouse to move the camera fast and to aim my grenades. Analog stick madness – no thanks.

I sit my keyboard on my lap on top of a cushion, I have another cushion on my left side so my left elbow can rest on it so my arm is level with my keyboard. As for my mouse hand, my sofa is level/flat enough so I have no issues there. As for neck/back, no difference than sitting at a desk imo. It’ all comes down to length of time playing that is what is important I think, as well as getting up and stretching, walking about etc.
Fact is some people may spend their work day at a desk and so may want a break from a desk on their off/leisure time.

If you change, “always,” to, “often,” or even, “usually,” this would be accurate. As is, it is not.

Pretty moot as you can always plug both mouse and keyboards into a console these days. I played ff14 on the first release and had no issues with the keyboard and chatting. But you are right, the combat there is very different and that game is more combat friendly when it comes to chatting.
No
I don’t really see it “revitalizing” much, but it would be fun to be able to play it on the PS4.. as for the X-BONE I’m 100% for porting it there… I might actually have a reason to turn on the oversized paper weight
Sometimes when I log into GW2, I reach for my controller and then remember…

Good insight, thanks.
As for the other posts on not using a keyboard…well I don’t miss it one bit. The mmo I’m playing now also has a limited action set similar to GW2 and combat moves well. As for chatting all I have to do is enter a zone/city/guild chat channel ingame on the headset for anything I need.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m sure this discussion is nothing new and exciting for Anet.

Honestly, I’m not sure how well it would transfer. In PVP you need to simultaneously move your character, move your camera, and move a cursor to use ground targeted abilities in order to be competitive. Looking at most controllers, I’m not sure how you could accomplish that without fixing the camera or rooting yourself.
I understand GW2 works on a steam machine, though not without it’s own unique issues. If that’s a platform you want to pursue then it’s possible to have a “console port” of any PC game that steam will run.
Personally I’d prefer the development team stick with PC-only rather than divide resources to accommodate another platform, but I don’t mind them considering consoles when they draft up plans for GW3.

Presumably you aim by putting the position you throw things at the center of the screen then just look around with the camera, just like it is with the current action camera.
Controllers are, in general, far inferior to KB/M when you need to move a camera around/aim accurately or you have a large number of actions to do, both of which describe GW2, so they’re really not a great choice for the game.

I have been playing on the couch with my laptop and the new Steam Controller. Takes some getting used to but with some creativity I’ve been able to geta really functional setup on the controller
Steam also has a wireless connector which will hook your pc up to your TV. Don’t know how well it works though.
I know that the PS3 version of FFXIV is limiting the PC and PS4 versions. (They might discontinue the PS3 version at some point though)
So in some way it’s good that they haven’t made PS3/XBOX360 versions. But I’m not sure how PS4/XBONE version would limit the PC version. But then again imagine how awful the inventory management would be on console. Salvaging, urght!
I have a Ps3 and Ps4 guess how much i use them… Never, i haven’t even played one game on my Ps4, not even sure why i bought it tbh..
I hate controllers personally.
Just that.
Stopped playing GW2 sometime back for two reasons,
-lack of effort/resources into WvW
-I’m too kitten old to spend my leisure time at the computer desk…(my problem)After years in school, and now working behind a computer making up around 60% of my work week I can’t bring myself to sit at my desk anymore than necessary..I can assume others (some/little) feel the same?
So I moved on to X1 ESO, and wow what a great experience that has been! Always populated in every zone and time of day. Now this is not to say ESO>GW2, as I find both to be equally great mmo’s…just different.
With xplatform (console=pc) communities, GW2 limited action bar, my couch…and a better future/opportunity for Anet, GW2, and players I can’t foresee this not being a win?
my 2cents, and no you can’t have my “stuff”, already gave it away.
Wont happen. Ever. Consoles would be REQUIRED to be separate from PC servers, and updates would be few and far between because of the vetting process they’d have to go through to get updates through. That poses problems with crucial bugfixes that need to go out within hours of a larger patch being released.
Guild Wars 2 wouldn’t put out 10 fps on a console. Terrible engine. Forget about this.
“We can’t do X because it won’t work well on the console version.” …. yeah definitely not a win.
Well ESO have DX12 in progress, so that’s hude advantage in my personal opinion.
But you can also play GW2 from your bed/couch or whatever … just get wireless keyboard and mouse + connect your PC to TV. Problem solved!
Or just buy USB extenders and you don’t have to waste more than 10$.
