Why is this not max level equipment btw?

On my alt account my highest level char is in its 20s. I get level 80 exotics when I get that chest.

It should be max level equipment if you’re max level when you open it. I believe in all the ones I’ve found so far, the resulting item has been level 80.

If I’ve just been lucky, and you can sometimes get level 77 or 78 items out of it, that happens with exotic drops as well. The item can still be salvaged or used in the Mystic Forge to get something of value from it even if you won’t use it.

Wut seriously? I only get 79 even if I open it with a level 80 char.

I’ve gotten named L80 Exotics each time. Must be luck of the draw. /shrug

It’s random. I believe the range is either 76 or 77 to level 80.

A good rule of thumb is if it’s named, it will be level 80. E.g. Crystalline Blade or Devona’s Helm.

That being said, how high the level is doesn’t usually have a large effect on price. Keep an eye out on the rune or sigils and always check the upgrade cost and compare it to the cost of the piece of gear. Often I’ll salvage the exotic gear anyway with a BL salvage kit because I often get about 2 ectos and a few globs of dark matter too. If it’s an untradeable piece of gear (accountbound) I will always salvage it because I’m unlikely to have a use for it.

Of course, a level 77 piece of equipment might be a bit frustrating if you’re freshly gearing your characters. I’m pretty sure that a level 77 exotic will have better stats than a level 80 rare though.
