There is a trend where some players are calling that skins give you prestige. That its true, but only to a certain degree: It depends on to what the skin is related. For example, is it related to gold/gems/time?, is it related to skill? or maybe just simple luck?

While all 3 are important, in my opinion a game should focus on the skill far more than the others:

Being awesome at jumpong puzzles, a great leader in WvW, an epic PvP player, defeating some complicated boss/dungeon/fractal/whatever …doing activities that need skill, creativity or whatever thing that its not just repeating something eternally or having tons of time or money.

Why?

1) Because developing a skill -unless you are a prodigy- still needs time and its FAR more FUN.

2) Because it serves as “tangible” rewards that you can show and enjoy

3) Because scarcity for scarcity sake only has sense in a economical way of thought, unrelated to the emotions or desires of players: A weapon that is really ugly can be sold for more because its super-ultra rare, but most of the players wouldnt care. On the same way, a weapon that is awesome looking will be desired by most players for its looks FAR more than for its rarity.

Now, how it relates to the actual game ?

In my opinion those 3 ways to find skins/titles/things are not balanced at all, with tons of things time/gold gated, some things skill gated and well about “having luck” I know people that ruined their accounts to get a precursor.

Lets be clear: Im not against having things locked behind money as A-Net deserves to make EXTRA bucks, but it certainly demotes the worth of what I payed for the expansion when 95% of the skins (the rewards that the game gives you for being awesome) are behind money/gold/time instead of ability. Even with some improvements (like the new ranked PvP, or legendarys) the core game in general was FAR better balanced about giving you skins or “tangible” things (titles, home minerals, minis etc…) just for playing…

… but hell, maybe Im completly wrong and the new patches-season will cover that, what do you think?

Agreed. That’s why everyone can get a twilight with gold bought by gems but not everyone can get the fractal backpiece or legendary one now, or fractal weapons, or the liadri mini for the gauntlet.

Prestige should definitely be earned. Glad they have the right idea for legendary armor now if they can just balance the raids to its quite doable by pugs but still challenging enough to fail if group isn’t coordinated well.
