Rifle / Shotgun identity crisis
The only other profession that uses a rifle is the warrior, and they indeed use them like a rifle.
Range all round is 1200, with skill 3 being a rapid fire attack similar to assault rifles, skills 2 and 4 does cripple and cracked conditions similar to precision shots at weakspots, and skill 1 bleeds.
All round the Warrior handles the Rifle true to its namesake.
I play a warrior and I tend to call it the “shotgun” in chat. I’m not a gun specialist but to me it looks like a shotgun, and I like to use it on Orr’s zombies just for style.

Engineers get less range by default (again making me wonder if it’s really a rifle) but I’m not complaining about that. I understand the Engineer’s playground is primarily mid-range.
Engineer rifle is more like a shotgun or an old 1853 2 band Enfield rifle using buck and ball than a modern rifle I’ll agree to that but I"m fine with that as well .
You know I have a feeling that whoever created the Engineer class was a fan of Call of Duty 3. The Engineers (medic?) there also had shotguns and that is pretty much what they are here for Engi’s.
I roll Engi as my main and I do also have a Warriror and I must say that the Warrior does seem more like a “marksman” than an Engi does, especially when they go down on their knee to fire that powerful shot with the F key.
I harldy ever use my rifle on my Engi now so I guess I don’t care anymore.
Ya i always felt confused by that why are the engis, who have less armor and defense than warriors, given the shotgun style skills when we would probably be the type of class that sat back a little dropping turrets and packs on our allies in front of us while randomly booning as well.
I don’t know kinda feels like they didn’t think it out or maybe they did and felt that the warrior would of been to powerful with a ranged weapon that used mostly close range skills(even though that would make perfect sense as a warrior is all about getting in your face).

I smell troll but I’ll bite. Many of the ideas are from the Team Fortress 2 engineer. That engineer also had a shotgun but he also had turrets, a wrench that also repaired, and a healing dispenser. The flamethrower airblast also exists in TF2. The jump shot is also kinda sorta like rocket jumping.
Given the shotgun-like nature of the Engineer’s rifle, there is a further distinction that can be made. A shotgun within it’s range and for its intended purpose is every bit as ‘powerful’ as a rifle. Considering its purpose you could say, when used appropriately, it is more ‘powerful’ than a rifle. Not so the engineer’s shotgun. My engi is quite envious of my warrior’s rifle. I tell him that even if he could equip it, it wouldn’t do him a bit of good. Perhaps this has to do with balancing a profession that has a variety of ordnance not available to a warrior. Whatever, the rifle feels relatively weak in the hands of an engineer.

Never played that but thanks for the info. Also I don’t troll, I’m not some immature kid thank you very much.
The engineer is so disappointing. I was hoping the engineer could construct more things to give the team aids

Things like ladders or bridges would be cool for WvW, just imagine it – “Engi needed to build a ladder for this tower wall!”

I do LoL at “Aimed Shot” (the cripple), it’s the only skill fired from the hip. Worst aim ever.
Fun Fact: Originally the Engineer class was supposed to have its very own weapon set (perhaps it went with other classes too) called Shotguns (hence the skill set of the engineer). This idea, however, was scrapped and replaced with the subset Rifle. This is why some rifles look like shotguns (such as the gear rifle) and others look like…rifles.
Not too confusing since irl you can get shotshells for rifle and slugs for a shotgun. Or is that more confusing? hehe
recopied from another engineer forum
Our Rifle does it’s best damage up close, but that fact rings true for nearly every profession. Since we we’re designed with only 3 weapon combinations total, they needed all three to be rewarding when shifted into the close combat quarters. Thus why Blowtorch, Jump Shot, and Blunderbuss are the way they are.
The rifles in the game are not modern rifles, they are infact flintlock muskets. That is why they function as both a shotgun esq weapon and as a rifle.

In game terms it simply means they are not “loaded” with shot, daub and powder because this would be to time consuming and crappy mechanics for every shot.

That’s simply not true. There are sniper rifles, laser rifles, plant-rifles(who knows what these are), and regular rifles as well. There’s actually a rather low amount of muskets/blunderbusses.

They are mostly in the rare line rather than in the exotic.

That’s overpowered.
