Hello. I was wondering if there was any chance that the effect of this item could be either changed to a unique skin or tied to an infusion like some of the other effects. Currently it uses a generic skin and the effect is tied to the item only.

Mostly my concern comes from accidentally salvaging the mask. Based on the number of presents I needed to open to get this item, it seems pretty rare. Not so rare like Winter’s Heart Infusion, but I had to open about 10,000 gifts to get it I believe (~600g worth of gifts).

I am asking for this change as it is the only item I believe I have with an effect like this and I don’t want to lose it due to a moment of carelessness (like right-click mass salvaging or otherwise).

You could contact the CS Team and ask about getting it replaced. They are pretty good about things like accidentally salvaging rare items.

You should be able to regain the item back following the above steps.
In the unlikely event you don’t, don’t buy gifts hoping for it, wait for Wintersday and do the PvP reward track, it’s guaranteed from the final reward.

Thank you for the responses. I was unaware it was available via PvP reward track. I was aware the CS team at times would replace items accidentally destroyed, but I would be very highly reluctant to contact them over a mistake like that. A unique skin seems like a reasonable request, particularly given the availability of ascended breathers now via LS3 – A Crack In The Ice (Wegloop breathers). It would be great having this skin available for high level fractal water levels. Without a skin you need to swap equipment for Level 3/4 fractals and keep an otherwise somewhat rarely used item in inventory and hope you never salvage it by mistake. Why make such a cool item so darn difficult? Thank you again for your responses. Until something changes, I will just be really careful with it if/when I ever open the Ancient Mariner’s Oilcloth Bag.

The support team is there, in part, to help address irrevocable mistakes, whether causes by awkward game mechanics or simple player mistakes. You should contact them exactly as often as you encounter something with which they might help.

It would be nice if we could transmute the effect to other aquabreathers.

Since the effect is not attached to the skin – which is the common Aquabreather skin – it is not possible to transfer the effect to other items.

It just uses the default aquabreather skins instead of having its own unique skin. So when you go to transmute a different breather, there’s no special skin to transmute to.

This also means that the icon used by the wiki will never appear ingame, as the icon of the skin is always prioritized ingame.

It would be nice if they gave it a unique skin that looked like the icon on the wiki, or something similar. Especially since it has a limited selection of stats, as well as being exotic rarity.

Indeed, they are very accommodating whenever they can be. =)

You can reskin the breather and it does keep the effect.

Mass Salvage only goes up to “All Rares”, so since the Breather is Exotic it should be safe from that fate atleast. Should all go wrong and you accidentally salvage it anyway, I’ve always had a good experience with ANet’s Support they can restore certain rare items that have been destroyed out of carelessness (atleast if you can prove you once owned it/them).
The effect will remain on the item even if you transmute it into another look, but you can’t transfer the effect to another item. It would indeed be nice if it was an infusion or something so I could get an Ascended breather on my char that uses this..
