Greetings,

I’ve been playing mmos since Ultima. I’ve RP’d since pencil and paper D&D and done so in just about every game aside from this one which I just started playing in November of last year.

I really enjoy RP in many of its contexts, however, I generally stay away since it takes a lot of effort to get into a good story and maintain a decent part in it. That’s only fair.

However, I hang out in the Royal Terrace most of the time to do my business in GW2. I consider most of my characters to be of certain birth and place in Divinity’s Reach. I also have Norn and Asuran characters. I put some thought into them. However, I usually end up playing them solo and just having a good time.

I have over the last eight months tried with no success to insinuate myself into the PUBLIC discourse of /emotes that I can see on my chat screen a number of times.

First of all, I realize I can just turn them OFF. However, that can limit my game elsewhere. So, I leave it ON.

I see these really great /emote conversations while I’m doing my banking and trading on the Royal Terrace, and they are coming from an adjacent zone of the city. Yes, we all know that /emotes carry a long way.

I can’t help but be enticed into the conversation because I am not just a mechanical player. I enjoy a certain RP element as well.

I got my RT permanent pass last late Winter. Since then, I have tried a number of times to get myself into the PUBLIC /emote conversations of players being VERY polite, very subtle, very creative, very rude, very aggressive, very silly and a number of other things on a number of toons.

I have received hardly any responses. Just recently when I tried to politely “talk” as a human Krytan wearing the Ornate Silk Clothing tonic trying to blend into groups in the that bar area where /emotes can be heard from the Royal Terrace, I was frankly ignored by two of them. I got /laughs from one or two and two whispers.

One whisper said, "Hang in there “bro.” The other whisper said, “not sure you’re gonna fly here, bro.”

Not sure about all this BRO BS since they were all female…and I mean ALL of them female with one or two males standing about. IS this RP in GW2 about a bunch of guys wanting to ERP with each other as women?

I tried again this evening, but I did it as a really aggressive and feisty Asura. I sat and watched the /emote convos for about twenty minutes, then I created a line or two that I thought would be appropriate to enter the story line.

I got a whisper, “What are you trying to do with my character?”

Then I get, “You need to go away, or we’re going to report you…”

AND they did. I mean I didn’t break the TOS, but I got reported for trying to sincerely RP with other RP gamers.

Does one really have to APPLY now to RP? Have people become so really insane…as in more than I am…and believe me, I have issues which take me out of reality sometimes but not in a bad way…in order to RP with what seems to be the same people?

I can see elitism being a thing in a PVP or RAID context because it takes certain manual ant twitchy skill which as an older gamer, I no longer have. However, I can write a story line for just about any scenario in a few minutes and insert dialogue.

Are we down to that now? Or are these just some kitten players?

I mean I wouldn’t say this if I had not been experiencing this for a while. I’ve only been playing GW2 since last November which makes me just over a noob. but I am no noob to RP.

I think it’s cool if groups do NOT want people included in their story. It so, then put the story into a PARTY OR SQUAD context. Use a guild chat for it if the story needs a tag which my lord, that must be a large RP group. If it’s larger, then, MEH, get a TAG for it.

I am simply over walking into this same bar in a number of different guises seeing PUBLIC /emotes and /say convos going on and being excluded regardless of whatever I do. AND NO, “Hang in there, Bro…” is not an appropriate response.

Yeah, this is rant. It’s a big rant since it’s been building up since last Spring for me at least. What I would like is some simple advice on how to deal with this. If one must apply with RP background, Social Security Number, Games Played, your GW2 player background with player Name, Race, Profession and complete choices in the Personal Story to Zhaitan’s end….then well, KITTEN me.

That’s how I feel RP is in GW2 as I’ve tried to experience it in the last six to eight months. Your positive feedback would be appreciated.

I would love to RP with you. I would also like to write a long detailed reply, but I am on a bus going to town. Please, contact me if you would like to play sometime.

I just need to comment on the ‘bro’ thing as it has both amused and slightly irritated me. Being called bro is great when I play one of my male characters. But I am a woman and when my character is also a female, it makes me both chuckle and sigh. For some reason many people still seem to think players are male.

When you get off the bus, feel free to give a detailed response if you like. LOL. It’s NOT a huge issue, but it is another another part of the this game which I feel is important to a lot of players, and I would enjoy being a part of it without having to undergo the same scrutiny as members of an elite PVP or Raid guild would undergo. I have underwent both and passed a long time ago. Not keen on doing it with my RP skills which are in all honesty are better than any of the above ever were. I just don’t want to mess up peoples’ stories…but at the same time…if they are PUBLIC with their /emotes…then aren’t they inviting others to participate? That’s my deal mainly. :-)

I wouldn’t say they are public per se. I think of these /emote conversations as private, no matter where they take place. Think of it as having a conversation with a group of friends at a restaurant/bar; sure, the conversation is taking place in public, but would you want some random stranger to just cut in? Some people welcome it, others don’t.

I think your best bet would be to look for RP-oriented guilds, to be honest, or to at least ask ( whisper ) one of the participants in these public RPs if it’s okay to join in, possibly with the hint that you are actively looking for other RPers.

I like to RP by myself but I also understand that many people are not into it..I just don’t care…
My thief asura when is caught into the ratasum prisons has always to create an escape plan ending with a “SMOKEBOMB!” to escape…it just makes everything more fun for me XD
And that happens for all the other characters…my norn do not like water…my necro is a dervish from gw1 that remained alive with necromancy, so he knows everything about the old lore..
I wish there was a way to connect with the other RP players in a server RP only…that would feel amazing XD.
If you want you can conact me ingame to chat, RP only!

Hi there,

I find this an odd post and something that deserves a little bit of attention. RP’ers are supposed to be the best of the community and not just shun people who know what they’re doing for the heck of it. However I would love a bit more information on how you tried to bring yourself forward in the RP. What sort of emotes did your character do? What did you say? It’s all a bit vague.

You must understand that the RP community, albeit rather small, is divided in what style of RP they want to do. If you go outside of the style of that particlair group, which I don’t think you have since you’ve observed before joining, then you do run the risk of being “One of them…” and not “One of us.”. Not good, for sure.

But yeah, give me some more information. I’ve often joined in with a character with no guild tag, and without anyone knowing the character. I’ve found that it was easy and that I was welcome. So I’d like to know exactly what you did that made people react that way.

If it helps, you can also join the community on www.guildwars2roleplayers.com. There you can find likeminded people and perhaps even join a community.

In my opinion, MMOs aren’t the best format for roleplaying. Having said that, there are likely some guilds somewhere in GW2 that exist for that purpose. You should try to find one, because trying to find roleplayers by randomly bumping into them is going to get you a lot of those types of responses.

If you really want a more RP-focused experience in an online game, however, I recommend checking out some of the old text-based games from the 90s. Some of them are still around and still have hundreds of simultaneous players. Due to their small size and rules that encourage or even enforce RP, the staff in these games are able to truly include player characters in unique storylines. Just as it was in the days of small groups with pen and paper, you can BE the story again!

I like this game a lot, but I don’t come here (or any other MMO) for RP. If I want that, text games are where it’s at for me. The downside is that, well, obviously it’s text. Expect detailed worlds that require your imagination to bring life to them, and gameplay that no amount of imagination is going to bring life to!

MMOs are greay to roleplay, you can actually SEE the character you want to create and act its emotes and everything, unlike text games.
I dont rp much lately, but i did enjoy it in GW2, its very nice what can be done.

I’ve tried numerous times to get into a good roleplay too, only to be ignored. I did happen to get into a rp, but it was leading into areas I felt uncomfortable with. There are too many cliques – but it’s not just here, it’s everywhere you go.
So…I stopped worrying about ‘fitting in’ and wound up making a new legendary!

If you can get the right person/guild to RP with it can be fun. For example, the cardinal rules in the RP guild I am in are about respecting others rather than ‘how to RP’.

As to people assuming there are not women in games part of that is stereotypes on the net and part of that is cultural. For example, my gaming ID to the left I think looks very feminine (many English women’s names end in a soft ‘a’ sound) but a lot of people that do not know me assume the opposite.

Hi Op,

I just wanted to let you know that no, not all role players are like the ones you experienced. Not all of us are into ERP as most people would have you believe.

Also, not every role player just hangs out in a tavern and chats. Just last night my some of my guild mates and I role played a scenario where two of our characters were kidnapped by the Inquest, and the rest of us followed clues across several maps to find and rescue them.

Many times, when I just want to relax, I’ll take my Priory character, go to the Priory, and greet people in /say, welcoming them to the Priory. Most of the time I’m ignored, sometimes I get trolls who spam skills on me, but once in a while I get actual interaction, and even a “Well done!” in a private message.

My point is, don’t be discouraged, keep at it!

Where are you from, people? EU or NA?

I would love to form/join a new RP guild without rep, just for fun and silly dialogue.

I haven’t tried yet to mix into existing RP groups, mostly because I don’t see them often, and my time is quite limited, but I hang on these forums a lot, so if the idea grows from here, it could be easier for me.

Also, for any of you that want to SERIOUSLY RP, you should visit http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/ They really have it all, even an in-world newspaper, and orderly ways to apply into RP centered guilds and events.

Unless the CS Team contacted you and actioned your account, there is no way to know you were reported. Other players claiming you were reported means less than nothing. I’d not worry about it, if there was no breaking of the ToS rules.

Good luck.

Roleplaying is something of a personal affair. It’s generally best to ask in whisper first to join. And even if they were first to respond, they could have been much more polite about it and told you it’s a private scene. (lol, private even though the /emote range is stupidly ridiculous. All of Rata Sum can hear your lame barfly chatter…)

The guild I’m with, when we used to be heavier in to RP, we’d be glad to roll with a scene if someone interested game by or if someone wanted to watch/shade us for the scene. We haven’t in a while, but I do suggest following the earlier links to find good and pleasant RP guilds.

OP, the people you’ve run into are likely rather self-important and crave the public RP in order to be seen doing it, trying to make their 3edgy5u scenes some display of drama.

I think it’s cool if groups do NOT want people included in their story. It so, then put the story into a PARTY OR SQUAD context. Use a guild chat for it if the story needs a tag which my lord, that must be a large RP group. If it’s larger, then, MEH, get a TAG for it.

That’s how I feel RP is in GW2 as I’ve tried to experience it in the last six to eight months. Your positive feedback would be appreciated.

Bolded part, PLEASE. If you’re not open to public participation, don’t make your RP public.

Many alts; handle it!

Despite playing the game since near launch, it’s only recently that I thought I’d try my hand at RPing in this game. There was definitely a bit of adjustment to getting started, but I found that if you get the right group of people, it can be a very fun experience for all.

I can’t tell too much from your description about how you tried to join in, or why they reacted that way, but the advice I’d offer you is to ask them through a whisper if it was OK to hop in. Personally, if I’m RPing somewhere in the world, I’ll accept anyone who just happens to come by. Of course, the key there is that you need to actually be there in person, and not try to RP from one district over.

In any case, like a few other people, add me to your friends list and give me a whisper if you see me online. I’m an altaholic, so there’s never a shortage of RP to be had with me.

If you haven’t already done so, I recommend joining guildwars2roleplayers.com – there’s a directory there for both NA and EU Rpers to help you find fellow RP friends and even find guild dedicated tot he type of RP you want to look for.
