Role Playing Server
There are two unofficial RP servers currently; Tarnished Coast for the US and Piken Square for the EU. Ya’ll find many ah role player on TC I know for certain, many of em very good people ta play with.
I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.
why do you need enforced rules for everything? Roleplay if you like, wear town clothes, do not run in towns, name your characters “properly”, it is as easy as that. I rather not see anet waste resources to police things roleplayers may be “offended” by.
Im an RPer and have always played on an RP server
Saying that I have to say no, we dont need an RP server, Tarnished Coast is doing just fine…great place to play! you should try it out but one thing…leave any god modding at the door, no one wants it or likes it
Also, you might want to add your voice to this thread in the suggestions forum.
Personally, I prefer unofficial RP servers. I don’t role play myself, but I do enjoy the RPer community. If my guild wasn’t on a different server I’d have switched to Tarnished Coast in a heartbeat.

See this is why official rule sets don’t work. People have very different view on what constitutes a roleplay basic! For me I only agree with one of the three rules you suggested all the others seem limiting and would restricted roleplay rather than encourage it.
Personally I have found the unofficial servers to work very well.
RP-er from Piken Square here, and I have to say that it works great to RP without those rules.
- Wear town clothes in town | What if you are role playing a soldier, coming in from the field with dire news? He won’t have the time to stop and change clothes.
- Don’t run in town | Same as above, for example. Also, you have to be tolerant that people do not want to RP all the time and might want to run around doing other stuff as well.
- Naming convention | It does feel great seeing people with IN-character names and all that. But since the RP servers are unofficial, one has to be tolerant to non-RPers.
From my experience, it works great being on one of the unofficial RP-servers and finding groups to roleplay with. Have not felt the need to have an official one. I remember in WoW, on the official RP-servers. A lot of people had off-names and fooled around everywhere. All you could do was to just ignore them. And also, it probably is a lot of extra job for the devs to keep poking every person on the server who has a name that does not fit.

Both super points and to add ta them:
- Town Clothes: My default TCs are awful and nothing my Character would ever wear! But I’m a Thief so I got some great options in good looking medium armor; alot of it looks jus’ like clothing. (same goes for allota light armor) So forcin’ TC in cities is jus’ silly.
- Running: Really? Nobody runs in cities? For no reason? I’m a Thief, I got plenty ah reason to run in a city ; Guarde players also got plenty ah reason to run … sometimes after me. An’ I lived in a city for years, people run in cities tall the time for all sorts ah reasons. Not ta mention, like Xerc said, I don’ always wanna walk around town – I like ta rp, but that doesn’t mean I wanna take twice as long ta get where I’m goin’ when not doing IC stuff.

ArenaNet (thankfully) does not support creating official Roleplay servers. And, just as a thought exercise, if we did have a server which enforced walking in towns and wearing town clothes, I’d flee from that server and never look back.
There’s this bizarre stereotype roleplayers keep perpetuating that RP is what happens in towns, in town clothes, inside taverns or in your home instance. It just isn’t true. I’ve been roleplaying since pre-release, and the very best roleplay I’ve ever found has always been out in the field, in the world at large, not walking laps around Divinity’s Reach or slouching over a bar in the Busted Flagon listening to roleplayers take passive-aggressive jabs at you in /emotes.
Go outside. Tyria is vast, dangerous and beautiful.
