Role-playing is assuming the role of a character and acting it through.

There are people who make lots of money for their ability to RP. George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, etc.

If you have the ability to visualize characters, and possibly even write in first person, you have all the makings of a fantastic RPer. Such examples might include H.P. Lovecraft, J.D. Sallinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

If you’ve ever seen a kid play cops and robbers, pretend to be a princess, had tea with imaginary friends, they’ve cut right to the core – the purest essence – of roleplaying. Doing it for the sheer enjoyment of doing it.

Roleplaying isn’t about winning. It isn’t about getting stats. It’s about letting your imagination run and running with it. If you’ve ever been absorbed into a great book that you can’t put down, if you’ve watched a movie and been so shocked or had your heartstrings pulled by the main characters, you have all the makings of a RPer… just put yourselves in their shoes.

Try it. It’s fun.

One of the best moments on Aurora Glade, is running into an RP group, and sending them on a quest to investigate the case of a missing necromancer colleague. It’s so enjoyable when content we create for ourselves blends with the game. That is why I roleplay all the time. The game is just full of more surprises that way.

So a couple of “unofficial servers” are RPing and that why I see none on Henge Of Denvari? And I find it hard to believe there is a big group of RPers. and yes SWG was best game of all time for ANYTHING not just RP. RIP SWG

From what I can tell most RPers do it in their guilds only to not disturb other people or something. While it is polite it’s not necessary

I just roleplay in what ever zone I’m in. Sure, there’s sometimes someone yelling something obscene, but those players are easy to ignore.

But quite often the reactions are quite positive. A lot of players on my server seem to enjoy seeing random in-character banter from players in an outpost.

And back when we did Hobo’s Valentine event on Aurora Glade, a lot of people had a big laugh when we started doing a dating quiz, because the answers were just so funny. Not all RP has to be strictly serious. In fact, jokes about my character wearing a wig have become a running-gag on my server.

There are many published authors that use RP to get into their character’s heads before sitting down to write them into stories. It helps to solidify them in the author’s mind and RP helps to bring the character to life.

RP is very much like acting on a stage. You do research for a role, then you play out that role. The fun of RP, to me, is in portraying things I would never experience on a real level, and it is also about “the feels”. How often do you read a good book or see a really good movie where you cry at the end, or feel the romantic tension / charisma between the leads, feel the adrenaline of a fight scene, or want to hide your eyes when a zombie horde traps the main characters?

That is essentially what RP is: It’s another form of “enactment” and “entertainment”, much like watching TV and reading, but the difference is -you’re living the part-. That’s where the fun is. And the brilliant thing about it is when I step back out of my character’s head, all of that is over and I’m back to my “real life”.

As far as GW2 goes for RPing in, the world is gorgeous, it has a realism that makes it easy to immerse into the setting, and the Living Story enhances player’s own character stories. That is the biggest benefit to RPing in GW2 right now. There is a wide array of armor that when pared and toned down, appear as street clothing. Combine that with the limited town clothes we were given, a character can be made to appear as anything from commoner, pirate, captain, noble, magician-type, fighter, Seraph, Lionguard, etc.

I rarely use game emotes, preferring to use custom emotes, so the lack of /smile, /curtsy and such doesn’t phase me much. Although a simple /smile would have been nice for casual RP settings.

Anet has pretty much alienated the RPer player base, though. I can’t quite figure that one out, especially since most RPers will spend a bucket-load of cash on appearance items. They’ve removed all town clothes and probably won’t be adding more, ignored our concentrated efforts to get RP tags and other requests, messed up emote range distances so they can be seen half-way across a zone now and won’t fix it. Housing was supposed to be a feature after release, but placed on a “we’re not sure when” back-burner.

Another issue that makes RPing difficult with others is those that follow the lore are a bit messed up with what the lore exactly is since Anet’s current writing team doesn’t seem to be double-checking their work, or they seem to have too many writers not checking their work against each other… or something.

There’s lots of things that are frustrating to RPers in GW2, but all a RPer needs is a text box and one other person, and they’re good to go. But yeah, GW2 isn’t the “friendliest” out there for RPers, but it gets done.

I want to make a good story in gw2 lore, I roleplay in gw2. I’m glad you admit we are free to do what we want. But honestly, whether you meant offense or not saying that it is stupid and/or weird is still offensive to people who genuinely enjoy it. So… Yeah.

I have played pen and paper Roleplaying games since the days of AD&D.

Never really tried it in pc games really, apart form the story I always make for all of my characters and the fact that I have a running story in my head wherever I go.
Which is incidentally why I have so many characters- they are all distinct people to me

Here and there I have run into some RPers in GW2 and it always makes me so happy.
RPers have a lot of fun- because they really live in the world.

More tools would be cool- but all you really need is your imagination.

It really really bugs me however that we have all these tables/ pubs and chairs in game and we can’t sit on them or even interact with the food and the drinks

Isn’t that what everyone is doing in a sense? Buying the game.. pretending to be fantasy characters? You’ve pretty much choked on your own words there.

RP is like a form of acting. If you think acting is stupid and weird, I’m guessing you dislike films too.

Still waiting for the things I love about GW1.
