Ruby Orbs vs. Superior Rune of Strength

http://gw2buildcraft.com/ you can mess around with builds using that website. On the buff tab you can put in the avg amount of might you exact to have at any given time.

Platinum Scout: 300% MF
Just a warning when clicking on the Thief part of the calculator it brought me to an unsafe site. Tried it again & it worked but I wouldn’t recommend that site.

The current “meta” which is followed by dungeon speed clearing guilds is
Scholar Runes>Ruby Orbs
Ruby orbs being the poor mans choice. So Strength runes are out of the question since speed clearing guilds keep a constant stack of might during fights.
Superior Rune of Strength
(1): +25 Power
(2): +20% Might Duration
(3): +40 Power
(4): 3% chance to gain Might for 20s when hit. (Cooldown: 5s)
(5): +90 Power
(6): +5% damage while under the effects of Might.Bugs:
The 3rd bonus actually gives +50 Power like other power runes.
The 6th bonus does not apply.
The bonus 5% damage is good with Forceful Greatsword (Warrior Trait that keeps Might up). I think it’s good alternative for Scholar Runes if you can’t keep your health 90%+ but it’s bugged as the wiki says.
Rune of strength does not work, otherwise it might have been used.

I actually switched scholar runes for ruby orbs for my mesmer.
I get quite a lot of power from ruby orbs as well + a lot of precision and 12% of critical damage, that’s a lot. I think it’s more usefull then scholar’s +10% damage while above 90% health, because how often are you above 90% while in combat? I guess it depends on your build and playstyle, but being berseker (who usually will use such runes) your health will mostly stay about 40%-80%, unless again, you’re staying in the back with your greatsword.
At least that’s my experience so far.
You’re just bad at dodging and/or blocking, or running with a low DPS party (which gives the boss more time to strike and bring any party member below 90%).
In terms of optimization and total efficiency,
Scholar > Ranger > Ruby Orbs, if I’m not mistaken.

Ruby is better for mesmer just because phantasms don’t benefit from the 10% bonus dmg.
Mesmer is literally the most survivable class in melee range. If you are struggling to stay above 90% on a Mesmer you won’t be able to do it on any class.

This is truth.
instead of orbs and such, I suggest going for boon duration. Sure, you lose out on a little power, but you can keep your might up much longer if you rune it right. (up to 50% increase) In my experience might that lasts half again as long is worth more than 100 power. You end up hitting the diminishing returns less often since you’ll undoubtedly hit it with the might on it’s own anyway, and your other boons will last longer as well (regen, stability, etc).
Its now how fast you kill it, but how long you can keep killing everything.

Please enlighten me, mr. pro, maybe record a dungeon run where you use for example sword+focus in berseker gear and can stay above 90% health at least 70% of the time in combat.
I use ruby orbs, because it fits my playstyle, i won’t be bothered to use necessary utilites and skills to keep myself above 90% just so i can have that 10% bonus if it doesn’t fit my preffered playstyle.
If you can keep yourself above 90% that doesn’t mean you’re doing more damage overall then other mesmer below 90%.

Here we go again. This won’t end well.

You’re quite condescending. But i’ll be nice and answer you politely instead of engaging in your lame polemic.
1. Where is this 70% number from? Scholar runes are better if you are there for 24% of the time. That’s not too crazy. So if you’re going to use some number, why not use the real one?
2. Special utilities? You have 2 dodges, vigor on crit, Distortion, and Blurred Frenzy. This is part of every mesmer sword build. If your “playstyle” doesn’t include using these things optimally, your playstyle needs to change.

Well there is a difference between survivable and “staying above 90% health”.
I still think ruby is better for mesmer because phantasms don’t get the 10% bonus.
And that video showed the mesmer dipping below 90% often, invulns don’t sustain your health lol.
ya. the mesmer in that video is not really taking advantage of the (6) bonus from scholar runes.
on some fights, yes, he hardly takes any damage. but on others, he spends most of it below 90%.

Sorry, didn’t mean to be rude there, but anyway, from your video, yes, “you’re there” for at least 24% time above 90%, if that’s what it takes for runes to be worth it, i don’t know, i haven’t done the math. Still, this is orginized dunegon run, you guys are even on voice chat. I mainly play with pugs atm, so there are not always boons flying around properly at the right time and people are not that coordinated. It’s pretty easy to stay at full health and clear the dungeons in minutes if you have good team,a t least one guard is very helpfull, i’ve done such runs myself, but playing with pugs that happens maybe 1 run out of 10.
And there is also other content aside from dungeons, roaming, taking on multiple enemies by your own. Will you be able to stay above 90% in Orr most of the time?
But, if you’re saying you gotta be there 24% of the time, then it’s not such a big deal, i think most of mesmer can stay above 90% for 24% of the time.
To be honest, 24% is a bad number too. At that point Scholars are about equal with Ruby Orbs . There’s no point paying much more gold for extremely marginal (0.1% or even less) gain. Even at 33% upkeep you aren’t gaining much.
50%-75% is something you should try to achieve to really get something out of them.
I see.
“Provide evidence.”
OK, done.
“You’re evidence is accurate but I still don’t like the conclusion.”
Gotcha. No need for me to continue this conversation then.

There are 3 boss fights.
Troll: over 90% the whole fight.
Frost magic guy: Over 90% about half the time
Ginva: Over 90% most of the fight.

It might be the video quality, but doesnt look that way to me. To me, it seems like he has 17582 health. 90% of that is 15823.
