Why the hell does adding a Rune of Sigil to an item make it SOULBOUND?

I made an exotic zerker set for my necro on my ele (as it has maxed its crafting disciplines). I bought the runes and applied them and for some idiotic reason they’re SOULbound??? WHY NOT ACCOUNT BOUND?

You can’t believe how frustrating this is. I wasted a LOT of money on this, for nothing!!! I just don’t see the logic of making it soulbound….

Inb4: kitten you should of read the description. Not the point here… The point is why adding a kitten rune or sigil makes it SOULBOUND if you never wore it…

Because pretty much all exotic equipment in the game is soulbound once you bind it (ie. by customizing it with an upgrade). That’s how it is. It’s unfortunate that you didn’t know about it ahead of time, but yeah. I don’t see it changing. Ascended gear remains account bound, even after you put in an upgrade (as do legendary weapons).

On the plus side you can do this to asc gear and they are WAY more expensive.

?? I know with ascended gear at least it remains account-bound when applying runes or sigils. What runes did you use?

Also lol, exotic set is nowhere near a lot of money.

Well with a black lion chest you can salvage the runes. The rest grind some Cof/Arah/CoE for zerk gear and/or money.

Derigar, I would STRONGLY recommend that you do NOTHING with this armor, and open up a support ticket and see if there is any way they can help you.

My personal experience with CS has been that for the most part, they are more than willing to help people who have made mistakes or not understood some aspect of the game.

Best of luck!

Not very good guild mates then. Of course, they could have told you as an exotic it was going to soul bind….

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

AGAIN. Complete a support ticket. Explain that you didn’t realize that you could do a support ticket to MAYBE solve the issue.

What’s the worst that can happen, they say no? And you’re right where you are now? But potentially they could restore the armor to the pre-bound state for you.

It’s worth a shot.

For all the folks who are saying “an exotic set isn’t much money”, please try to remember it’s all about perspective.

A slice of bread might not be much in the way of ‘food’ to you, but it’s a day’s meal to a starving child.

Similarly, we have no idea of the net worth of the OPs account, and minimalizing the impact this has on him is unfair.

If he says it’s a lot of money to him, accept him at his word.

Also don’t overlook the fact that when you applied the rune to the armor, it popped up a warning that it would soulbind and you had to click “Yes” to continue.

Man, tough break. I remember when my account was new and I wasn’t raking in much gold. Sorry you didn’t know about the soulbinding protocol ahead of time.

Maybe your guildies can pool some resources together so you can make some more sets? Gossamer isn’t too expensive, and if you have laurels, you can get T6 crafting bags to make up for the ones you lost.

What gear set were you making?

Yep. There is a warning that pops up when you upgrade exotics that this will make it soulbound. Whites, greens, and iirc rares, the warning says account bound.

That said, it’s easy to blow past that warning when you are used to seeing the account bound warning. I did it with a set of rare armor I was making for a guildie after launch.

Be careful what you ask for

WvW and Karma armor is a SURE way to loose any runes. You even loose the ability to salvage the rune/sigil back if you ever do change armor.

Sorry, but when you attempted to apply the rune it gave you a popup that specifically told you that adding the rune would soulbind it to the character. That was your chance to say, “Oh, I should transfer these first and apply them after.”

Instead you said fine, then got upset because you didn’t read the warning that popped up. It’s not ANet’s fault that you didn’t read the warning. You can only blame yourself for that.

Then I also made all the Exotic weapons a Necromancer can wear. I got most runes and sigils when I salvaged, so that’s not the issue. The problem is those pesky globs of ecto and vials of blood.

I crafted exotic assassin armor for my new engi while I was on my thief and just for kicks tried to add the runes and it asked me to confirm that doing so will make it soulbound.

I know you said about reading the description however did you read the popup that you got when you tried to apply the rune? And if you did then why did you apply it?

The game is way better now than when it came out. When it came out everything was souldbound. If you want to get dungeon armor for a specific character then you had to do the dungeon on that character since the tokens were soulbound.

OP, people muck up all the the time. It’s no consolation but I do something similar nearly every time I ding 80 late at night and, instead of knowing I should be logging off before starting, I begin the get gear together for my newbie 80. The stuff ups I’ve done…

Maybe, maybe not. For a long time applying upgrades didn’t actually soulbind, just account bound although the warnings have always been the same. It’s also a lot more reasonable to make it “Soulbound on Equip, Account Bound”.
