Soooooo this is probably gonna sound really dumb, and probably wont get a lot of supports which im totally okay with, but i thought it would be cool maybe, as a ranger if out in the wild, randomly, and very very rarely you’d find like a SPECIAL juvenile!

By that i mean, no special attacks, no buffs, NO battle enhancement, just maybe like a different color, reskin, or maybe add a few little details to them, maybe call them “Unique Juvenile” or some silly thing like that.

AND yes i totally took the idea from Pokemon, and a few other games that do this kinda search n find ordeal. I just feel like, as a ranger, once you got em, you got em, the search is over, which im sure thats how its designed! Nothing wrong with that, but it’d be fun to just stumble across a hella rare, different looking Smokescale, for example, maybe his fur could be red(ish) with like flaming horns or something (or whatever those things are on its face!) Maybe A sexy Wyvern made of Ice like scales, and mean cobalt colored wings, and breathes Icy flames of DEATH !

I dunno, just some silly shower thoughts, i thought would be a little fun to do
So go easy on me with the “That’s a stupid idea” comments :P

Just thought I would add why this more than likely won’t be added in: In those given games you were talking about, monster/Pokemon collecting is the entire point of the game. You collect, to then train, and battle those monsters/Pokemon/etc you caught, while someone else has all the chances to get said monster as well. If you add this for just rangers with their Juveniles, it will add a small biased to one profession over all the others for no other reason than to get a pet skin that no other profession in the game can use or acquire. Maybe if they did this for Minis, that would be cool, but doing it for one profession only is a waste of time, resources, and is biased.

I don’t think that it’s biased so much as just a waste of time.

But when they DO get time:

What could possibly be more simple is to add one pet that doesn’t have a designated spot on any map but would move around to random, rarely visited spots in the whole of Tyria. Kind of like a “where’s waldo” but far more difficult to locate on purpose.

Or they go do a black moa GW1 approach where it’s a scavenger hunt to eventually get the egg and hatch it. Plus it would go with every other achievement out there which basically consists of that same game mode. And now that I’ve said that, “where’s waldo” sounds way more fun.

Honestly, i don’t play ranger at all, and me personally even if it were to be applied, it wouldnt encourage me to play the class. But thats just me personally! But i feel like you saying people would feel a little biased towards Rangers because of a fun little thing to have in the spare time, would also need to be said towards Classes not being able to use certain weapons, or ect. As a thief player, i wold LOVE the Kudzu Legendary, but knowing i can’t wield it doesnt make me want to go out and make me a ranger, guard, ect. Adding something like a rare find to a juvenile creature, i feel, wouldnt really make much a difference in the grand scheme of things ^.^, only to just have something to go do when you’re bored. Maybe give some of the collector side of the community something to chase for! But all in all i can see where you’re coming from, and thats why, if hypothetically speaking it were to pop up in the game, there would be absolutely no benefit, no special power or ability, but to just look different and stand out. This is Fashion Wars 2 after all, and who freaking WOULDN’T wanna sick Icy wyvern next to their ice inspired ranger!? Lol, and tho i don’t play ranger, heck i’d love to just see others have em

But of course this is WAY out of the ball park, and totally just shots in the dark. I’m totally aware this wouldn’t happen, but it sure would be awesome!

What if there was a quest put in to unlock a flashy but balanced pet (say, a firebird that is basically an Eagle, but with a burn instead of a blind skill). You do the quest/collection, and one appears in your home instance for you to tame. And it ALSO unlocks a mini of the pet, so even non-ranger players get something out of it.

Do you think that would be a good idea and use of dev time?

The Hall of Monuments offer reskins of existing pets. I think it would be okay to also offer reskins of other, existing pets. And yeah, if they do that, it would be interesting if acquisition wasn’t as easy as “look up location in /wiki, go there, press [f]”. (without being too annoying)

What about a way to get your pet to “grow up”? They really shouldn’t stay a juvenile forever. Could do it by how much actually game play that pet gets or by some type of training manual. It’s just always bugged me that I have pets that I’ve had for a year+ and they are still a juvinille.

There already are some reskinned pets in the game – the Hall of Monuments pets are all straight re-skins (no skills or stats diffferent) and most pets within a family have identical stats, with only 1 skill different.

However I do like the idea, although I’m not sure what would be a good way of getting them. If they’re guaranteed to appear under specific circumstances then there will be a guide online in a few days at most and IMO that takes a lot of the fun out of it. Even if you don’t use the guide yourself it means you can’t have conversations with friends about how to get them because the only answer you’ll get is “use the wiki/some fan site”.

But if it’s random then some people will end up spending huge amounts of time trying to get them, doing everything right and still never get one, while others will get them right away, and that’s no fun.

What if there was a quest put in to unlock a flashy but balanced pet (say, a firebird that is basically an Eagle, but with a burn instead of a blind skill). I think this could be a better way of doing it.

They could do it like the black moa quest in GW1, or maybe the black moa chick scavenger hunt (which would make sense as a collection). So everyone can participate in the activity – themed around finding a mysterious animal that’s been seen – and unlock the mini pet at the end, but rangers also have the opportunity to tame the animal when you find it.

(The only problem is the animal would have to be permanent, or added to your home instance account wide, so that if someone completes it on a non-ranger they don’t lose their only chance to get the pet.)

People would end up exploiting map taxis just to check different map instances to see whether a shiny had spawned. It’s a novel idea but wouldn’t work because juveniles are in fixed locations.

Yeah, that’s what I’m picturing, added to the home instance account wide. Or maybe only one of the five home instances.

Let’s say that they do this, and it turns out to be popular, so they do it a few more times. We could end up with special versions of canine, feline, bird, bear, and (the oddly popular choice of) pig. Each one could appear in just one of the home instances, so we don’t get them too cluttered with animals we’ve tracked down. If the canine was a blooming flower version of a fern hound, it would be natural to find it in The Grove’s home instance, for example.

Disclaimer: That idea is only good if the home instances can be made to work that way, naturally.

They’d have to completely change the way pets work in the game so that you could actually tame multiple copies of the same pet, rather than the way it works now where “taming” a pet basically just unlocks it for use.

Which would require an actual database for pets, and judging by the fact that they won’t even devote a simple database to keeping your pets names stored… yeah, not going to happen.

i like the idea
if not for a pet, just for items in general. I rarely rarely rarely do any pve since mobs (speed bumps) really don’t drop anything of value or anything unique thus no incentive to even visit 95% of the maps.
but if there were rare random items laying around it may be something to do if wvw is queued up.

Super pets that require you to DO stuff? Anet tried that with HoT. You used to have to finish a boss event to tame a tiger. A tiger, which, is just a “shiny” jungle stalker, granting fury in stead of might.

Then the community cried so hard about it that they decided rangers shouldn’t have to do stuff to get pets. Even pets that aren’t particularly exciting.

I could see minipet collection/battle being a thing, they already started on the system in EOTN with the polymock game. Polymock would be a better addition than minipet battles simply because minipets are a major cash shop items for GW2, and polymock is based on statues, which would be earnable completely ingame in stead.

Wow i actually love ALL these ideas!

All very very awesome, especially this one:

I would take it even a step further. Legendary pets. And pet decoratons like hats or collars.

Legendary pets, heck ya! At least THEN there would be a reason to give them stat/fighting buffs! And im sure many will disagree, but remember this is all just fun and games, i’m sure none of this is sticking to the walls of Anet! But Costuming pets, having legends, why the heck not right? But i know that would give rangers “more legendary power” which would be unfair, yatta yatta, well then DONT add buffs, just make them hella awesome to look at! Having more items, or pets in this case, in the game to be really proud of and word hard for is ALWAYS a good thing. Plus its non tradeable obviously, so you would have to work for it. And maybe even get players to try out ranger, for ones that have never tried the class out, like myself.

Ok, going to play devil’s advocate here and think up some negatives to this interesting idea. I’m curious to see responses.

1. The biggest problem I see with this idea is that it only benefits Rangers. That means that less than 1/9th of characters would benefit from this (but of course, more than 1/9th of the playerbase would benefit because people don’t tend to stick with just one character).

Think how the legendary journeys got scrapped, because of how much dev time they required and how little impact it would have on players proportionately. In one of the recent polls I seem to remember around 1/10th of the playerbase actually owns a legendary (who engaged in the poll) and of course that means an even smaller percentage would go on to complete one of the legendary journeys. So if this pet idea was more than a simple colour edit or added top-hat, would it really be worth the dev’s time?

2. How could it be introduced fairly?

There has to be some scarcity otherwise there would be little interest in it. It would make sense if it was locked behind skill- perhaps pre-existing content that had few rewards (let’s say at the end of a JP). The black widow spider, black moa and rainbow phoenix (I think) were sort of “exclusive” ranger pets in GW1, they randomly appeared in regions that were a bit more challenging to get to and were also more difficult to charm, if memory serves me correctly. Of course the mechanics of GW2 are quite different.

3. How different would the models be? Would they be confusing in PvP/WvW?

4. Does this idea overlap with the idea of minipets and exclusive minipets that we already have?

No negativity taken, how i look at it everyone has their opinions and questions towards the subject, so I’m just glad you took the time out to actually make some very good points!

But because im not a very intelligent person myself, i’ll just reply to the ones i have ideas towards! (These might not be answer chronologically)

The statement about benefiting just rangers, i can understand. However i suppose every class has their really special thing about them, that only benefits them! The point i brought up a little earlier was the Weapon limitations. Like Thief’s cant use Longbows, Necros can’t use Hammer, ect. And the point may be brought up “Why would you want that class to wield them anyways, theres no way it could be used properly” Well, i suppose, but My very LARGE Norn-Necro should be able to carry around a darn hammer. But thats something special Anet does to stick them out, A hammer on Guard is different than a hammer used my Engi’s. So there that. Mesmers have portals, which i’d LOVE to have access to personally, but i don’t run a mes. Classes wear different clothes, Races have different outfits. So if you do end up liking those things, you simply just switch and make one. Like ranger, you see they have new, difficult to find, rare pets, you might hop on ranger and trey it out. But i know thats not the best defense statement, but i probably am just looking at it differently.

Introduced fairly, honestly, mix them in with where you find the others, just make it have a spawn rate? Or maybe Put them in totally different places, but still very rare to find. The point was brought up that if its something that can be found, or easily found, there WILL be a guide on the internet within a few hours. Which, for the lazy… it works. SO to avoid making it just “Oh man… i really wish i knew where the juve oinkoink was, let me just google it!” make the chance so incredibly low for it to actually spawn, in the bunch. Doesnt have to be Chak Egg Sak %, but even if it was, i feel would making finding such creatures 10x more rewarding. Which might actually just decrease the popularity spike, people have spoke of, in the rangers itself. People would get on try to find the new “Shinnies” and end up realizing… its very hard to find, so screw it, ill move on. I know myself, i HATE to farm, search, hunt for anything, i’d end up giving up and going back to my thief.

Model difference i feel should be, subtle yet quite noticeable. Honestly, like how a legendary differs from a regular weapon. You see pony’s flying thru the air, you can bet your money The Dreamer is loafing around. So i’d like to think the new “shinnies” would maybe have their own Footprints, maybe just tweek a color, give them flames, electricity, ice all depending on what the Juve is and match it accordingly. Someone brought up a point earlier “they’d need to fix the option where once you caught the juvenile, you caught it, that’s that.” And i figure the only way around it is to maybe code it in as if it were… a skin? Like you find the “shiny” out in the wild, assuming is super duper rare and you got hella lucky, you capture it as you would, which im sure is just the click of a button, no pokeballs are thrown. Then afterwards, you’d get like an item skin for that particular shiny you captured. So for example you see a golden juvenile pig out there, you run up cap it, get in your inventory “Golden Bacon Skin” or… well, something like that. Now, this game is very party oriented, by that i mean, when out raiding a boss, the more people the better! Why? because others can res you when you’re down, and who cares if they get good loot, because you have the exact same chance. So this might throw a curve ball, but I idealy thought, these “shinnies” would need to be rare, and difficult to get. So if some guy walking down the road see’s one, if he captures it, its gone. No /map “hey guys found a shiny! everyone come get” or “hey found a shiny! pay me 5g ill tell you location” No… none of that Finder keepers! Yes its a sad system, but they ONLY way if can be done as fair as possible. Just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Minipets i cant accurately say, because i have no idea if thats actually a thing, or an idea that was brought up in this thread :P But thats just my thoughts on it, i’m sure its very flawed and lots of errors that just would be impossible, but then again, this whole darn thread is hypothetical, so oh well ^^

Ok, going to play devil’s advocate here and think up some negatives to this interesting idea. I’m curious to see responses.

1. This is the very reason why my suggestion rewards you with unlocking both the pet and a mini version of that same creature. That way, even if you don’t like playing a Ranger, you can still gain something by doing it.

2. Well, it shouldn’t be/involve a rare spawn (RNG is no fun), and it shouldn’t be locked behind big/meta/group events. I would put it behind some collection work, and maybe some high level crafting.

Let’s say the pet in question is a Firebird. You have to go track down a few NPCs and talk to them, maybe even buying a few odd things from some heart vendors (which requires you to have completed those hearts). Say, a handful of shiny baubles from a skritt, and a couple of recipes. One recipe allows you to make food for the bird (400 cooking), and another a golden bird perch (400 jeweler, 10 bars of gold, 5 bars copper, 5 ruby orbs, and an elder wood staff shaft). Once you have all those, then it’s assumed that you set them up, and it attracts the firebird to the home instance.

3. The whole point is for them to stand out, so they should do just that. Firebirds, lightning tigers, boars of bling… they should be easy to tell what they are. But, they shouldn’t really be stronger than existing pets, just flashy. So, they will be no more threat in PvP/WvW than any other pet might be. That also means that players will have nothing to lose by using the normal pets instead.

4. My version clearly overlaps with minipets a bit, because you’d earn one of the animal in question. However, it should be easy to avoid overlapping the exclusives that already exist. Those exclusives are unique, but not really very flashy. The goal here would be flashy.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
