I wrote similiar stuff to much success but i thought i’d go into greater detail with what i think is bothering some players right now and what direction i’d like to see things go.
(i tend to rant so i apologize…its my one joy in life after pushing sleeping homeless people off benches)

SPVP needs ranked play, solo que tournament play, payed tournaments, and eventually an E-sport scene

Now we know the E-sport scene is being worked on because they said they were and they dont lie about these things. We know that a lot of these features probably dont exist because the game is in serious need of balance and bug fixes. Also, there are some design flaws that need hashed out.

First why does it need the above?

Ranked que gives players feeling of progression

Obviously i’m using League of legends as a big poster child. Forit is a game that went from nothing to one of the biggest E-sport games practicly over night (if 1-2 years is over night). So what does it give the players that make them keep coming back? Ranked acheivement! You feel good about each win and like your always moving forward by being identified with a rank that you can increase by playing better with your team or even solo! …(though solo sometimes more frusterating, but you can always blame your teammates for being noobs and causing you to lose even if it was your fault, i made a drinking game around this).

As it stands now the only progression in spvp is glory. Honestly i see the entire glory system slightly moronic…(sorry i’m offencive and possibly that guy who cut you off earlier on your way to work….or to get your disability check you lazy free loader).

Glory Progression System

What is good about it?
-get the joy of rolling dice with chests and the mystic forge or learning random recipes to make what you want in the mystic forge!
-you can get glory faster for being a bad kitten
(if it just said kitten right there, i did not mean kitten i meant your back side…wtf is their stupid kitten obsession, usually i say mean words and it just sounds like i want to abuse kittens…i dont abuse kittens i abuse alchohal)

What is absolutely stupid about it?
-mystic forge is annoying and just a time sync an annoying boulder to getting what i want instead of just saving up and buying it from the vendor.
-Smart play does not reward the most points always. Some of the things you would do to increase your odds of winning (say holding a point) do not result in you getting more glory. So your punished for being a good guy and rewarded for being a selfish kitten (once again i did not say kitten….)
-At higher ranks of play you get more glory than is needed to complete every item available to you. (this becomes a real big problem after 20 and increases there-after)
-Being able to grind for glory makes your rewards seem like nothing…example.
Like when that guy said to you “how are you able to equip a greatsword on mesmer?” and you look at him and realize hes a mesmer too…and has higher rank gear than you……it just pisses you the hell off. (i love kitten… haha, insert your own profanity there i coulda said ANYTHING!)

Anyway you get the idea, i dont wanna talk about it anymore so if you didnt get my point read it again or find another method for getting your jollys outside eating paint and letting someone beat you in the head with a stuffed animal. (…that was harsh…i hope people dont judge me wrong and start thinking im a crazed angry drunk complaining about a video game….oh wait…kitten)

since it’s about spvp and not tournaments, i would go so far to say that defending is simply not done, or helpfull in any way.

You’re not defending against that one lone wolf stopping by. If so, than you’re both doing it wrong

You’re ‘defending’ against a zerg of 3 or more players… and than you die.

The only strategy seems to be: join a zerg that needs you, don’t join the one having 5 players already. They don’t need you, those 2 others do.

Not sure about all of your suggestions, but I do agree this system needs serious work.
I feel like playing in a pvp testing beta at the moment…

Wiggely, wobbely and other wombaty wabbity creatures…
