I was wondering if anyone would be bothered if cultural armor vendors had one-time only stocks. Like the ones in the “One-time Purchases” tab in the laurel vendors.

The other day I accidentally bought some T3 that I already had. What’s done is done, but what if it could be avoided in the future?

With weapons, the karma cost is nice for some quick rare ones at those levels, but for armors, you can already re-apply the skins with the wardrobe, and the costs of all 3 tiers are rather high compared with other alternatives like dungeon, crafted, looted and WvW rares of similar level and stats.

Can anyone think any reason why someone would want to buy any of them twice?

If not, why not simply making them one-time purchases, so nobody else can make the same mistake as I did, and people can tell better which ones they are missing?

Oh, maybe with order gear too. Over 8 gold for a level 65 magi set? Who would buy that twice?

I believe the reason it hasn’t been changed is because of how transmutes worked before the wardrobe system. Technically speaking they are one time purchase. As it unlocks in the wardrobe. Just be more careful next time

I sympathize with your wallet’s pain on that. The trick is to look at the item’s tooltip and make sure it says “Skin Locked.” I’m pretty sure the cultural armor unlocks on purchase, not on use, so you needn’t worry about whether you have it waiting in your bank unused.

ANet’s original plan (based on an early interview regarding Ascended tier, starting at 1:40) was for Exotics to be the top tier stuff, but they vastly underestimated how easy it was to acquire and had to introduce Ascended to fill that role.

So you could say that Rare gear was supposed to be the “good enough” tier instead of the “ectoplasm/mystic forge fodder” tier that it is now; Cultural armor is expensive, but was supposed to be cheaper than Exotics and a reliable source of gear to outfit alts with. It seems like ANet just didn’t bother updating Cultural gear to Exotic quality to reflect the shift in power level, so we’re left with overpriced skins that nobody wants to pay for more than once.

@Riku.4821 which is no longer the case. So that’s one reason less.

@Donari.5237 I know. It happened to me because I did it with a set that has one of those icons that look like part of a different set. I checked that one and kept going with the rest of the icons of the same color without reading too carefully. I should have checked on each skin, but I noticed too late that the icon just happened to have the same background and color as a different armor class.
But that doesn’t mean the purchase can’t change so you don’t even have to check each time, if there’s no real good reasons to buy them twice. And the only one good reason there ever was is the one Riku mentions, which no longer applies.

@Pandaman.4758 I seriously doubt cultural armor was meant to be an alternative to exotics. The reason it was made rare instead exotics was probably so people would transmute them to exotics.
Cultural armor was never cheaper than exotics. And the tiers are level 35, 60 and 80. So even the cheaper tier was never cheaper than any rare armor from any other source.

I consider tier 1 and sometimes even tier 2 cheap enough to get the armor pieces for a character if I wanted them to wear cultural for look reasons, not caring about stats.
I haven’t actually hoarded the stuff since I have very few high level characters, they just aren’t able to wear it.

I haven’t compared the price with the cost of charges, so far I don’t have any to spend without a lot of consideration. I would check this if I started buying cultural for the reasons I would since outside of log in rewards I don’t have any other sources for charges that I like.

…And I would tm the stuff to level 1 armor anyway so that it’s not restricted to high levels.

if you still have that second item unused you might try asking support to exchange it for a armor piece of the same just another armor class like you bought heavy gloves twice and dont have light gloves unlocked.

Edit
Might take quit awhile but should be possible for them to do since its the same gold that left your hands either way.

Thing is Cultural armor is obviously cheaper than Ascended, from the interview we know Ascended is what Exotics were meant to be, therefore it’s not a stretch to infer that Cultural was intended to be cheaper than Exotics. Clearly intention didn’t synch up with reality.

Cultural armor never being cheaper than Exotics only indicates the supply of Exotics was high enough to depress prices, which is supported by Colin’s statement about them underestimating how easy it was to acquire them, which would naturally depress the prices of all other tiers of gear as well.

With how transmuting doesn’t do anything stat-wise anymore, maybe people would want to buy them on multiple characters because of stats?

Dunno. I was always more annoyed over having to re-buy and unlock the ones I already had than accidentally buying more – since I honestly rarely ever go to them since there’s “better” things I could be saving my money for. “Better.”

Nah. Stats is not a good reason, as there’s much cheaper sources of the same stats.

Their cost is only high for the skin, to the point they could be skin appliers instead equippable items, and nobody would really lose anything they could not get cheaper elsewhere from the change.

They should just bite the bullet and make them skins to purchase with gold…. The idea that they are actually usable armor is laughable.

Now if they WANT to make it usable:

  1. Change T3 to Exotic
  2. All have select able stats (like crafted back pieces).
  3. Come with some decent. racial-related, superior runes. (they could be salvageable since they cost so much).

if they don’t change it in exotic tier, at least make the skin free to apply.
it’s a fair deal considering the high price, some gemstore skins are cheaper then T3 armor….

I like this idea. They need stuff to be usable for sure. It’s like the Year of the Ram celebration we just had. The gold back pieces weren’t even level 80 because they didn’t want us to be able to salvage ectos from them? Super petty and completely useless as an item for play. Sure, we have to use trans stones, but introducing content so that we have to use items from the gem shop is a terrible reason to introduce items from a player standpoint.

Just make the cultural T3 armor exotic. That would be great. At the very least make them skins that don’t require a trans charge for initial application.
