If you open them on a lvl 80 character you most likely get elder wood and mithrill ore. But if you would open them at lvl 55 you would get the lower tier of those crafting materials…

Now it really depends some T3-T4 are quite expensive…it really depends on luck

I open all mine on the lower level character, as I still get the T6 mats from the bags, and when salvaging, linen and such is worth so much more than silk, etc.

Good luck.

No, a Precursor can drop on any level character.

I’m pretty sure a precursor acts like all other non-champ bag exclusive exotics: you won’t be able to get one until you can get exotic loot drops on your character.

Directly from a mob, I think that’s true. But from a loot bag?

You can get level 80 exotics from champ bags at any level. Got one running eotm at lvl 12 just the other day.

Note the part where I said “acts like all other non-champ bag exclusive exotics”. The champ bag exclusive exotics ONLY come from champ bags and can be received at any level, as they are on their own special loot thingy. Hence the distinction in my original post. Any other gear given in the champ bags will be based on the level of the character opening it; so a level 60-something or higher will have a chance of getting exotics from the rest of the bag, too.

Edit: There are also things like Final Rest, which are event-exclusive items and can also drop for low level characters.

Exotic champ bags drop the same T5-6 mats and named exotics for all characters, regardless of level.

Character level only does two things:

  • It affects the level of gear dropped (armor, weapons, trinkets); that will match the toon level.
    • L53-57 toons probably have the most valuable greens.
    • L80s have the most valuable rares.
    • L60s have a nice mix of the two.
  • Sub-L80 toons don’t get bloodstone dust (a big plus for people conserving space; a big minus for those working on ascended gear).

If you want to maximize the wealth you receive from selling bag contents on the TP or from salvaging mats, use an L50-60 toon.

All true, except for one small thing: Any quality of champ bag can drop the champ bag exclusive exotics. I got Stardust from a fine quality champ bag on a level 30-something character.

Oh? good to know. I’ll add that to my future notes. (I never get anything good from the lower-tier bags.)

so to summarize, if you want a precursor, you should open with a lvl 80 character? if you want gold, you should open with a level 60 ?

No…named exotics can drop for any level character. I just got one on a level ~20 day before yesterday.

My second precursor dropped at Level 6; it was Dusk.

so theres no point in opening champ bags at lvl 80?

just open everything at lvl 60?

It is up to you what you want to focus on. The knowledgeable Illconceived Was Na was kind enough to point out and list some of your options. You could peruse the Wiki for more information on what drops from which loot containers at which level, as well, should you be so inclined.

Good luck.

It depends what you want.

  • L60 gets you more valuable masterwork gear (either sold directly or salvaged for mats).
  • L80 gets you L80 rares (more valuable than L60 rares), bloodstone dust, and non-named L80 exotics.

What about the coin from the bag itself? Does the level 80 get more coin from the bags than kitten

I haven’t checked, but since the coin is such a tiny part of the value, it isn’t likely to matter much in the calculations. The mid-tier mats from salvaging mid-tier gear are much more valuable than the T5-6 metal/cloth/leather you get from ~L80 gear.

For example:

  • Cloth: L80 pants average less than 5s worth of silk/gossamer. L55 pants are over 13s in linen, about 8s difference per salvage.
  • Leather & Metal: about a silver more for e.g. L55 medium pants. About 1.5s per piece of heavy armor.
  • Wood weapons: also about a silver more per salvage.

And as noted, there’s no difference in the amount of named exotics or T5-6 mats for exotic champ bags.

Now, if you want to put your weapons in the MF for a chance at something valuable, you might consider opening the bags with a L80 character. You can get some items worth some gold from L50-60 gear, but, if you are looking for a precursor, the gear will need to be of a higher level.

Good luck.
