I always support Anet by buying these permanent items which very slightly improve the in-game quality of life. The Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic was really cutting it close in terms of how financially inefficient it is, but I still decided to buy it because I do occasionally salvage whites/blues/greens to free up space without caring for the resulting mats.

This wasn’t a big deal until I saw this:

We’re removing Magic Find as an equipment stat. Instead, your Magic Find will now be an account-wide bonus that applies to all of your characters. You can boost your account’s Magic Find using Essences of Luck, which can be earned by salvaging Fine or Masterwork items.

The Salvage-o-Matic is the lowest quality salvage kit (10% chance for rare materials), so I probably won’t be using it anymore since I will want to have a higher chance to get these Essences of Luck. So, thanks Anet for selling me an item with very limited use and then in the very next update making it completely useless.

Technically that was mentioned, in July, here:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

Account Magic Find
We want to remove the choice players are currently being forced to make on their gear: “Do I go with better stats, or better loot?” This isn’t in the spirit of cooperation that Guild Wars 2 is all about. As such, we’ll be removing magic find entirely as an item stat and turning it into account stat that improved the odds of rare drops for all your characters.
You can improve your account magic find through the account achievement reward system and from consumable items found in game. As your magic find increases, it will require more consumables to keep raising it higher. In the near future, we’ll detail the system we’ll use to replace the existing magic find items. Our goal will be to have as little disruption as possible to those who currently own items with a magic find stat on them.
Salvaging Fine and Masterwork Items
Otherwise known as blues and greens, we want to give more reason to care about these item types when they drop. When the account magic find system is implemented, there will be a chance you can acquire account magic find consumables from salvaging both fine and masterwork items.

That being said, I asked the question of “will kit quality determine if we get a MF booster when we salvage” when the infinite kit was introduced, but never got an answer. Technically it could have it’s own static drop rate not connected to kit quality, and that would be amazing. Otherwise, the infinite kit is a useless purchase.

Good point, still not sure how the Essences of Luck work though.

Could be unaffected by the rare mat %.

And would make sense in terms of flow.

Basic Salvage kits on Greens/Blues —> More Magic Find

More Magic Find —> More Rares

More Rares —> Mystic Salvage Kits

Then the basic kits fuel the Mystic kits somewhat, I’m assuming that’s how it might go.

That and the EoL’s are probably going to be really rare and not something to look forward to, which would then mean it’d be ridiculous to except us to waste Mystic Kits on blues/greens for something so rare, just my deduction lol.

Nobody said that the Essence of Luck is a “rare material” yet.

I think it’s safe to assume that higher quality salvage kits will have a higher chance of retrieving EoLs.

Also, although they have not said this, I can only imagine that there is a soft or hard cap on the amount of magic find you can acquire this way. Otherwise, rich players would be able to buy up so many items and salvage them and end up getting precursors every time they sneeze on something.

I’m not quite sure which I hope it is. A hard cap would mean one can hope to get a competitive magic find eventually, but it would also mean that after some point, that part of the game would be “over”.

And a soft cap would mean that it’s never “over”. You always want to salvage more for a higher and higher magic find, but it would also mean you could get super behind other players and/or get to the point where all you ever get anymore is like +0.000001% magic find.

Edit: Apparently (someone quoted a dev in another thread), Essences of Luck will give permanent boosts! So ignore this post please.

I assume these Essences of Luck are like consumables that only last a certain amount of time — or maybe last a certain number of drops?

I’m sure Anet has set the probabilities so that generally, the amount of money you lose by salvaging and not vendoring the blues and greens is equal to the amount you gain by getting more rares from Essences.

@OP
When I saw that item I knew that it’s useless with or without the changes to the Magic Find.

I never buy the basic salv kit, so this item is not for me. I still love my Mystic Salv Kit.

http://sirvincentiii.com ~ In the beginning…there was Tarnished Coast…
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

With the current magic find system you have one rng “gate”. The higher your mf the better chance you have to find something of value. With the new system you will have to deal with “rng” to first find an item that can be salvaged to have another ’rng" chance that it will break down into “essence of luck” with the use of a kit to finally arrive at the point where you currently are.

Seems like a lot of rng!
