So I have a Copper-fed salvage-o-matic which I use for greens and blues, I use a Master salvage kit for rares and finally a Black Lion Salvage Kit for Exotics if I want the Rune or Sigil. I stopped using the Master on rares as I was not getting many ectos, and started using the Black Lion Salvage Kit on rares, but this in now also yielding hardly any Ectos. The quickest way to lose players is to nerf everything to the enth degree, Mystic forge yields the odd lev80 Exo, but mostly they now level 75 to lev 78. So Anet, is this a bug or is the future of GW2, where it becomes impossible to play the core part of the game which is bosses for rares, then salvaging for crafting and gold. After 3 years of playing and with almost 19k AP, 1700 WvW, lev 80 PvP, I am finally coming to the end of asking questions regarding the way the game has gone. I seriously had more fun in the beginning, more drops, better Mystic drops, better Exotics than I do today. It seems with every patch we get worse, and have yet to see a precursor in normal PVE, WvW, or PvP, only from the Mystic. Can you please explain the dynamics that have changed so much that it has become increasingly evident in every part of play.

Sometime the goddess does not favor you. I had a good run today, 10 rares and 20 ectos, some days it could be less or more. It just how things are sometimes.

yeah i doubt there was any nerfs to ecto rates. In fact, the new gambler in LA seems be there to deal with excess ectos and help keep price stable where they want it to be. Sometimes the dice rolls suck, man =/ I’ve been there. Once salvaged 18 rares and got 1 ecto. Then there’s times where I’ll get 8 ectos for 3 rares. I’d say don’t waste your BLK on rares, though.

The tested average of the mystic salvage vs lvl 80 rares is just shy of 9 ectos per 10 salvages.

I think my personal average is still somewhere better than this, it’s not uncommon for me to wind up with more ectos than i salvaged items.

Randomity is random.

Uh huh, im saying no way on hell that happened, if you got 20 ecto from 10 rares then you have the best RnG from the entire game,

Given that the people who have salvaged thousands of rares to get the average and it came back at just under 1:1 your ratio of 2:1 seems a little off,

I salvage a lot of rares everyday and you do go threw streaks of bad luck, but if you do actually count it out it will average out at around just under 1:1, do not use a black lion salvage kit on rares, its a waste just stick to the master kit, also remember that its not always worth salvaging them sometimes its better return to sell the rare, keep an eye on the market.

20 ectoplasm from 10 rares might be unusual, but it’s not impossible given that one rare can give up to 3 ectos. You got to remember, with all the people who are salvaging rares there are always going to be the outliers of the group. If you are going to call out TJgalon as unlikely then you should have also declared YOUNGaz as even more unlikely since he reported 1 ecto from 18 rares.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I have had plenty of bad days too. the goddess gave me a return of 0 for 5 rares, it happens, heh. Like I said, I had a great day today, though more then likely tomorrow will be bad to even it out, lol.

It can be up and down with salvaging rares.
My best is 24 from 8 and worst was around 0 from 12 or 13.
Average though i find is 1 from 1.
I only used to salvage armors, but the last couple of months i throw my rares into the forge unless they are staff/sword/daggers which i list on the tp.

The number of ectos i have been getting has gotten so bad i have pretty much stoped salvaging rares, and thats after investing in a silver-fed salvage-o-matic specificly for salvaging rares. Is it possible that the salvage rate is manipulated to maintain the price of ectos? I have noticed in 2.7k hrs that when the price of ectos drops low then the number of ectos i get from a days salvaging will drop.

Like others have said, RNG. Sometimes a salvage will net me 3 ectos, some T6 mats, and a major sigil. Other times it will just be one piece of mithril and a sigil.

I certainly hope the ecto gambler is not responsible for what I have seen lately! When the new LA opened it was 40s-42s. Now it is 36s. Given that the only time I bought was when leveling crafting …

It’s interesting you mentioned the silver-o-matic as several players i know have stopped using it and gone back to mystic kits as the machines ecto return rate seemed to bad.

I’ve noticed a distinct drop in my ecto rate, I always use BL kits and only really salvage exos but out of the last 30 or so salvages I’ve had about 10 ectos. I used to get about the 0.9 average but the last couple of months it’s either been bugged/nerfed or my RNG luck has just gone to kitten.

Getting ectos all the times. I never had a ‘bad run’ over a longer time. Usually 6-8e for 10 rares or so.

He was lucky at that particular time. I’m sure he’s had bad runs too. If we took all the salvages he’d ever done into account then I’m sure it’d come back close to that 1:1 average.

It’s important to remember that although we think of these salvage chains as a “run” each salvage is a discrete event that’s completely separate from every one that came before and every one that comes after.

After a daily boss run I’ve gotten 13 from the first 5 I salvaged then nothing from the other 8 or so. If I’d only salvaged the first 5 then I’d have had a great run.

Also depending on the server architecture he probably shares the same RNG as the rest of the people on the megaserver he’s on. At the exact same time that he was salvaging his 10 rares getting his 20 ectos lots of other people could be salvaging rares and getting a single mithril ore or killing mobs that were dropping nothing. Also, given the nature of the average RNG, if he’d started salvaging a second later or waited a bit longer between salvaging he’d have had completely different results.

RNGesus definitely smiled on him but in the real world as much as in the game world.

What do you use to determine if it’s better to sell or salvage? Is it if the market price is above the cost of a single ecto?

Hm, I use silver o matic aswell for rares, and also noticed since I bought it I gotten less ectos. But if thats the case it must be bugged then? it clearly says the same as in the rare kits. Im not sure, but didnt they nerf the ectos (% to get) from salvage a few month ago tho?

Hmmm… my main has my Silver-Fed Salvage-o-Matic but I’ve been playing on my alts recently and they use Mystic Salvage kits. It’s kinda concerning that there may be a problem with the Silver-Fed Salvage-o-Matic but it’s impossible for us to to prove it one way or the other.

There’s no real advantage to the Silver-Fed Salvage-o-Matic over Mystic Salvage kits anyway so I think I’ll just leave it in my bank, for now.

RNG is RNG.
On the other hand tho we all remember that glorious patch that nerfed the forging. The only thing that is out place – forging lvl80 items which have the possibility to give you results below that level. Still even today me and my friends wonder why oh why this was implemented.
I myself forge at least 60+ rare or exo items lvl80 each day, and in the recent few months I’ve noticed that the below lvl80 output is higher than it used/it should be. Outrageous tbh. Ofc this is only my personal observation.

People used to do statistics about the rate of valuable drops. For science. I ask if someone could do something similar just to see how things are going today. I honestly believe there is something wrong. Because I run constantly with 270%+ magic find, farming different well known spots on a regular basis, and I see the drop of valuable items isn’t what it used to be a year ago. Thoughts?

Friends have also been complaining lack of Ecton from salvage rare items. I too gave up on that and all of the rares I get now go strait in the mystic forge. After getting fully ascended on my 2 mains + the dreamer for my thief (best legendry I may add) I have no real reason to farm ectos and I have enough gold farming bosses and wvw to keep my food and stone supplys up. I have got 3 precursor this year alone dumping rares in the forge.

The lvl 76-79 exotic weapons that got added to the mf drops were intended to add new faucets of salvageable inscriptions and sigils to the game.

I prefer those compared to a lvl 80 pearl weapon, which wont give you any sigil or inscription upon salvage.

RNG is RNG. Seriously, I sometimes get almost no ectos from a bunch of rares. The other day, I bought a bunch of crap rares and exotics to finish out a bunch of the collection achievements. I didn’t have them because I leveled my crafting on all my characters back well before they or the wardrobe were added. Anyway, I was expecting to be throwing gold away, since I was literally just buying and salvaging them to put the skins in the wardrobe, and buying immediately at that, no buy orders. I ended up pulling in enough ectos by the time I was done to pay for every single thing I purchased. Every single thing and then some…

I’m not saying that to brag, I’m just pointing out how crazy random the results can be in an RNG system. I could just as easily have ended up with 2-3 ectos and a bunch of missing gold.

We can’t tell from anyone’s post in this thread if anything has changed in the drop rates for ecto, because no one has posted actual numbers for their last 50-100 tries. The variation on 10 or 20 salvages is enormous.

Human memory is demonstrably unreliable when it comes to keeping track of things like this: we over-count bad results and under-count average or slightly-better-than-average results (since they are boring). Put another way, we treat “51 chances in a 100” as “better than 50-50” which we start thinking of as “more often than not” — and then we remember all the times it was less often (ignoring all the times it was more often).

In this game, there are hundreds of people that track their results for 1,000s of salvages — if those people haven’t noticed a rate change, then I doubt there is one.

If you think the drop rate has changed, keep track of at least 100 salvages in a row. If your rate is below 80e/100, then post in the forums asking for others to verify those results.

tl;dr the drop rate hasn’t changed; everyone of us will have bad salvage luck some of the time.

It doesnt really matter. The average level 80 rare item sells on the TP for ~30silver.

I think average ecto rate is about 8.5 ectos per 10 rares (mystic), but thats with some (~1/3) dropping none and some dropping multiple. If you dont want to accept the chance of not getting any ectos, the sale price of rares at 75% ecto value is a pretty good deal. You lose 10% potential profit but you had zero risk.

This only widens the range, reducing the chance of getting better items. I prefer having a better % of having a precursor. You can keep your insignias and sigils. Am I rite?

Youre right, thats why the droprate for precursors and exotics with unique skins hasnt been nerfed with that change.
