Guild Wars 2’s prime has long passed, but I believe there is still a chance to relive the glory days…

Playing other games and seeing how games are being made nowadays, GW2 seriously needs to get with the program, and here’s how.

1) Housing
This is something that has become very popular with MMO players.

2) Open World PvP
Along with new rewards and items that players could potentially receive for doing so.

3) A dedicated map for GvG
Come on A-Net, many people in the community have been asking for this for years.

The mechanics and combat system of GW2 are superior than any I have ever seen, all that is left is creating a reason to keep playing. I hope this isn’t too much to ask for.

Technically there’s still hope, but realistically, looking at recent developments (white swords debacle for WvW, gemstore gold-to-gems money grab, for example), it’s pretty clear there isn’t going to be a miracle comeback for GW2.

Superior to any other RvR type MMO I would say.

This.

PvE will survive most likely since that is where their focus is, but WvW will die off even further if nothing changes.

1) Housing is a flash in the pan – people go mad over it for a while and then it starts to die off eventually.

2) Open World PvP? I have lost track of the number of games that have introduced Open World PvP as the solution to falling numbers. In fact it is the beginning of the end; it has the opposite effect – it gives an initial boost to the player base but this increase tend to be gankers and griefers and the player base then drops off as the PvE players leave as they get fed up with being ganked, then the gankers leave as there is no-one left to gank.

3) Dedicated GvG? I don’t really know about that although personally I believe it could harm WvW.

Many people asked? How large is the player base and how many asked, and how many researched their suggestions first?

1. Housing is boring to me. Guild halls on the other hand and more guild related activities would be fun
2. Maybe certain locations on certain maps. The issue is that the only people there would be those not good enough to kill people in WvW or PvP.
3. I like the idea.

Well, when we have something like EOTM its rly hard to argue that GvG would harm WvW.
WvW has already been harmed coz it has been greatly neglected: same mechanics, same maps, “waiting – EOTM – room” is nothing but that, weird additions like siege disablers, bugs that took forever to be solved and some that still exist…the list is endless.

Being a former GvG player in GW1 and seeing how it was able to build an active, well knit and competitive community it was always hard for me to understand how they dropped the idea in GW2. Btw, there are still GvG´s ongoing in GW1, its still active, there´s still tournaments. I mean, real tournaments, not seasons that dont change and mean nothing.

So, by adding GvG in GW2 you would definitely hope to:

a) bring back players that left GW2
b) expect that the hardcore population of GvG´ers still in GW1 migrate to GW2
c) have proper tournaments and competitive play (major issue imo!!)

I do understand that adding GvG in a way that it relates to WvW would have to be carefully thought but its absolutely possible imo.

The game can’t support open PvP. People are concerned EotM is starving WvW of players. Open world PvP would make it considerably worse. The noly benefit to open world PvP is the mega server architecture and being able to use it for GvGs and fighting against new players.

If they were to introduce open world PvP it would need to be at the loss of WvW entirely, which honestly may not be that bad. Who knows.

Housing I’m honestly surprised hasn’t happened yet. We have a home instance. Give players a single room in an Inn to decorate if they aren’t in a guild. If they’re in a guild, the home instance simply turns into your guild’s castle/keep/structure and you have a room in that. Change guilds, your home instance points to the new guild etc etc etc. Effective, instanced, housing which could be expanded to include guild housing with relative ease.

What about a GvG that includes 3 guilds per team (15 man/guild….so 90 people total). Could have different game modes like attack & defend. Or rush to a point. Or idk any number of possibilities. Obviously this isnt a complete thought but to me it sounds better than your regular GvG. Kind of a bridge between TPvP and GvG.

Ya i was thinking about it a bit more and it would have to tie into WvW and not be completely separate to actually help save WvW. The reward i had in mind for winning this “Raid vs. Raid” would be an item given to the 3 commanders of the winning side. Supply Package: Drop a supply crate containing 100 supply…single time use. Can use anywhere within WvW. For all other players a chest with a chance at rare materials and siege ect. This would not only encourage the growth and interest in skill groups but make skill groups much more efficient within WvW. I think the main reason WvW is on the decline is that it is always a numbers game. But if there were more skill groups there would end up being alot more skirmishes and fewer blob v blob s. Again this is still a very basic idea and needs to be thought out alot more but i think it is a good building block to start with.

Housing:: nope

Open world PvP: Nope

GvG: possibly, but I would rather see that done like it was in Guild Wars 1 with guild halls .

Housing: you have your own home instance. You have your own district of a city!
Open World PvP: WvW? You have 6 maps for open world PvP…
Dedicated Map for GvG: Obsidian Sanctum (Arena) is a map where guilds GvG. its perfect for it and serves that need well.

Seeing as how we already have all of this… What are you asking for?
This is just like the Raid topic. People are begging for Raids when we already have tons of Raids.

I think there is an information dissemination problem. I think people are asking for things on the forums because maybe they just don’t explore the game enough or talk with enough people to know how much this game actually has in it. Not sure; Best guess.

Hell even ZOS has wised up to how bad AoE caps are for a Large Scale PvP game and are removing them because all the problems it has caused.

Removing the AOE cap wont solve the problem, though it never should have been added in the first place either.

The problem is the zerg nature of WvW, everything you do can be better done with more numbers, and so people run 50+ blobs, even 80+ on some servers!

The only way to save WvW is to actually get devs working on it!
Wasnt the September feature pack supposed to be a PvP one? Well it had more PvE and QoL content than sPvP and WvW combined! What does that show you.

Part of why zergs are so powerful is because of the AoE cap. If every AoE attack on the heart of a zerg damaged everyone in the zerg instead of only 5 of them, AoE attacks would cut down any tightly clustered zerg and they’d have to spread out to survive, thus reducing the benefit of AoE boons.

The other thing making zerg viable is the lack of collisions. If the people in a zerg to in each other’s way for movement and attacks, again, they’d have to spread out.

True enough, but it does make the world come alive. Make it more dynamic, visually.

I have been playing Archeage since it came out and have no plans to return to GW2. Why? Because you cant “save” it. Its still an excellent game made by excellent developers, no denying that. I enjoyed it immensly and put down alot of time and money in it. But I’m not really seeing how open world PvP and housing would ever make it in game. The engine in GW2 is pretty much obsolete now. I wont even start comparing the 80 man raids, full collision detection, single instance world where you dont even notice zone loading and amazing naval combat in Archeage, I’ll simply sum it up as below:

Anet need to make GW3. GW2 is done. Now make a new GW on a 100x larger scale in a modern open world MMO. And it wouldnt hurt to bring in Guild Halls, no. Oh and let me bring over my achievements and 2 legendaries, lol.

What ever merits Archeage’s engine and mechanics may have (and I didn’t think the combat was nearly as interesting), I found time-gated labor points, that you can pay a monthly fee to improve but not eliminate, a show stopper and the weekend I planned to spend learning it to see if I could like it lasted only a few hours before I was back on GW2. GW2 has already added some time-gated crafting limits and those are bad enough.

In case you didn’t heard Anet is going to implement 2 week test periods for wvw with new rules to see how they really effect wvw. The first week is no white swords and points per kill system. No idea what rest of the periods would be like. I think that it is a good and safe way to try to improve wvw.

We will also have a GvG CDI after the Guild Raids CDI (Which should be this week or next).

I think that they implemented the AOE cap because of bandwidth issues. It would be nice if they removed it though. But like uncapped conditions, unfeasible. The lag would be astronomical and may make us miss the time of the invisible zergs (culling).

As far as I’m concerned, GW2 doesn’t need “saving”. At least not as a whole maybe. The game does not seem to be dieing or close to dieing in the slightest when I’m on. I don’t know how populated each world is that you all play on but considering the world server list, every time when I see it they are all very high. Now the world I’m on is always active with players either in the major cities as well as LA, especially with the Halloween event going on right now not to mention I always see more than a handful of players in the PvE zones and chats are active. So, I don’t get it? Most of the comments though I see are about GvG and WvW. Now I haven’t played any of those yet and I’m not really interested in them right now, I’m just having fun with PvE and the game as a whole. To each their own I guess.

How are the combat mechanics superior? Superior to what?

Well, it promotes the use of players own skills, you have to keep moving, position yourself and you can even dodge attacks at your own choice.

PvP has no issues with this.

PvE however, is designed to be too easy, open world PvE atleast, mobs die too fast and do pretty much nothing else than die, dying too fast makes “Offense is best defense” scenarios for 99% of mobs.

Common mob design:

  • High HP, effectively resists Condition dmg, offers about no defense against direct dmg on it’s own.
  • High dmg per attack, mobs rarely have anything else, basic attack and power attack.
  • Activate a skill once every 3-5 seconds (Includes attacks too).
  • Weak abilities, mostly does only 2k-5k dmg per hit, very rarely uses conditions, boons, healing, control or boon/condition manipulations. This results 2/3 of mechanics that have almost no use in general PvE.
  • Have very low/0 armor, this is only stat that resists direct dmg.

Other problems, since PvE mobs are pretty much split into 99% trash mobs and 1% significant mobs. (Veteran Karka, Mordrem, Giant Beetles, very few UNIQUE dungeon mobs and significant boss monsters)

  • NoRank, Veteran and Elites are trash mobs, while Champion and above are advanced and boss monsters, I call it “Bad Rank Ratio”.
  • Due to the huge range of targets made up of trash mobs that die fast against Berserker DPS (99%), pretty much dominated by DPS, while Support and Control are useless builds.
  • Support and Control builds have extremely limited target range in the 1% of mobs, where all builds have equal chances. Call that “unequal gameplay options” for “Play how I want”…
  • Immobilize is the Stun in PvE, since it can actually break the behaviour of the Champion or higher rank (Good example being Taidha Covington, or now better known as “The Pacifist Queen”). Sometimes I wonder if boss mobs should just be resistant to Immobilize…

Combat mechanics include stuff like Conditions, Healing, Control, Boons and Boon/Condition Manipulations,
but all these mechanics work if the mobs put up a real fight, create need for players to invest on “Longevity”, since “Offense is the best defense” is tossed out of the window, if the mobs can really fight at some degrees.

Of course, it’s possible to achieve some degree of need, but not making “Play how I want” concept useless, mobs just should put up better fight, where the combat mechanics are used, not that insane lvls tho, so that Solo gameplay is still possible and that you can use any build you want, but other builds can actually change the results, than just huge zerg of DPS blindly trying to kill 1 mob that can’t fight back.

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

Oddly in other games that have no or at least high aoe caps on dmg spell still have major zerging problems to the point of whom ever has highest number to simply run over the other team wins. The only fix to zering is to not play vs larger numbers in any game. Even collision dose not help.
There is simply NO fix to the out numbering the other team to the point of something that is true in real life war. So please do not think zerg mess things up because if they did most online games would have the same problem.

I don’t think GW2 needs saving, it’s doing better than pretty much every MMO released recently other than FF14.

It can be improved though. The weakest part of the game is character progression. Your character only has a limited number of body parts for you to decorate, so after you’re done with that perfect look, the question people ask is: now what?

There is no suggestion amazing or innovative enough to make up for how awful this one suggestion is.

The mechanics and combat system of GW2 are superior than any I have ever seen, all that is left is creating a reason to keep playing. I hope this isn’t too much to ask for.

Pfff, what? GW2’s combat system has the potential to be great but falls short on twice as many fronts as it gets right. It doesn’t even feel finished let alone superior. And after two years, the development team is still talking about maybe possibly considering meeting to discuss ways of fixing it, if they have time between the living story and spamming the gem store. I swear sometimes its like this game is run by congress! These problems were obvious from beta and should have had a clear cut plan to address them two years ago, or at least been worked on consistently up to this point.

  • Six of the games mere nine stats are worthless in most PvE content. Condition damage and duration; worthless beyond a single person per party. Boon duration, good for maxing out an actually worthwhile stat through might… sometimes. Vitality and toughness; completely unnecessary almost everywhere because…
  • Dodging is the only thing which actually takes any skill in PvE, and it is still only marginally difficult against the best bosses. Additionally completely negates any need for build diversity, which brings us to…
  • PvP, one to two meta builds per class, nearly ALL OF THEM bunker builds. And a development team seemingly completely unwilling to make the large scale changes to the game mode no matter how glaringly obvious the need. And speaking of obvious changes…
  • WvW feels like a gradeschool lunchroom brawl, just a bunch of bodies thrown together with no strategy, no organization, and no ability required. This mode is never going to feel like combat so long as positioning and organization mean nothing.
  • And finally what you fight, mobs and bosses, good crap is the encounter design in this game an all new level of awful. Part of it is definitely the dodge system, 90% of the bosses require you to strafe out of the red circle and dodge the single attack that will instantly kill you, which the boss throws out like clockwork. As for regular mobs, nearly all have one attack, three at most, the only ones that provide any challenge are those with some amount of control skills, or which you kite in to to group up yourself. And as much as GW2s developers made fun of other games for ‘spacing out’ mobs on a grid like an XP buffet, that is still what the majority of the areas in the game feel like as you cut your way through them.

There is huge room for improvement in this game. The engine is amazing, the graphics are great too, the dynamic is fun and fast… but it needs more than pretty colors. It needs more depth in combat than attacking and dodging. With only that this game is not different than any other console arcade game like Assasins Creed, Demon Soul or Space Marine… they all have great combat action where you dodge and attack basically. More depth, role specialization and party interaction is what separate one genre from another and GW2 lacks of that.

Zerk is the average Joe build. Don’t pat yourself in the back too hard.

Expansion.

That’s it.

Yeah, I probably agree. I don’t expect it to come, so I’ll enjoy what there is and hanging out with guildies for as long as I can. Real shame though, I love this game.

LS is an expansion just with less lag time between but with less content per releases. Expansion would do nothing different but make more down time that we just are getting out of.

You guys realty do not think things though do you?

Main : Jski Imaginary ELE (Necromancer)
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA

2) Open World PvP? I have lost track of the number of games that have introduced Open World PvP as the solution to falling numbers. In fact it is the beginning of the end; it has the opposite effect – it gives an initial boost to the player base but this increase tend to be gankers and griefers and the player base then drops off as the PvE players leave as they get fed up with being ganked, then the gankers leave as there is no-one left to gank.

Just wanted to chime in and say this exactly. I hate open world PvP because simply there are times where you want to relax and you simply can’t in a perma-pvp situation so you’re either bound to (potentially) just low level pvp-free zones or you don’t get to relax at all. That sucks.
I’m fine with how PvP is designed in GW2 – You freely decide when you want to do it, no one ganks you. Meanwhile, a duel option could be fine – Just add a auto-decline feature for it if people hate being spammed by them.
