[Science] A little experiment
My ears, how are you this fine morning ? Ready for a little experiment ?
I’ll cut to the chase to keep it short. (If you want to know the reasons behind this, I’ll put them at the bottom)This experiment will take about 15 to 20 minutes of your time if you want to participate.
Here is what you have to do:
- Log out/in to your character screen.
- Pick the character that is in the middle of your character list. (If you have an even number of characters take the one further to the right side)
- Log in to the game with that character and play for at least 10 minutes with the following rules:
- You can not leave the area the character is currently in.
(If you are in a city you may leave the city through the closest gate)- You can not enter dungeons.
If you have done so, summarize your experience, was it fun ? If so, why ? If not why ?
umm how about no??
what the hordor is this post about? why would i do this aaaaaahhh it hurts

shinies? Gimme shiny first!
what if this is generally what I do when I log on?
Yes it is fun- only kicker is when you get the dead horse character you abandoned in the middle of nowhere, lol.
Luckily I crafted with her late last night so she was first in the row and I got my Engi instead.
The tag science makes me angry
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

The reason for this experiment:
A lot of people seem to play only for rewards. It’s almost like having fun is completely tied to the reward. I wondered if this is true on a level of the games mechanics or if it’s something that’s just in the heads of players.
If a games mechanics are fun it should not matter what kind of reward the player gets.
Fun is the reward.
I’m curious what results come out of this.
Ok, I’ll bite…

Hunted holos/aetherblades & harvested (daily was already done, otherwise, would have done that). No drops of any note. Fun? Not exactly Vegas on a Friday night, but not as bad as watching paint dry.
Then again, this is not a new zone to me, don’t need it for completion. Had it been my first time here, the experience would obviously have been different. Had a ticket, precursor, or the like dropped, it would have been a different experience.
Not really sure what you’re expecting from this? Should “fun” just be handed to you? What’s “fun” to each player?
The constraints are so biased, the result set is obviously going to be skewed to a particular portion of the player base.
Obviously a player values their time, so, once they’ve decided to play, they’re going to go to the type of play that they enjoy most; be it PvP, WvW, instances, story, etc.
Perhaps a more “interesting” experiment would be to ask about the last 10 minutes of a play session. i.e. What had a player accomplished that they felt it was time to log off, or conversely, what frustrated them to cease play.
So, now, in fairness, what did you garner from my trial?
I don’t get the purpose of this. I do this all the time, just log into my characters and play around in whatever area they happen to be in. It is really enjoyable. I understand that there are a lot of people who only enjoy running dungeons over and over again, but they are not everyone. Accept that different people like different aspects of the game and different modes of gameplay and move on.
don’t really think this is going to work…
for most people….the character that is that far down on their list…is there because they don’t play it often because they don’t find it fun….or in my case, it’s my ranger that was nerfed all to hell

That is funny because I have 3 characters that I play interchangeably so the 3rd one in line will always be one of them.
I guess people who only play one or two will agree with you but if a character is not fun for me I mostly delete it.
Right this minute I am actually playing on my Ranger and she is as fun as ever
4. Enjoy the cake
None of my characters are high enough level to eat the cake.
I did this out of a lark, erm I mean, for science. And it went better than I expected. I’ll try to be more helpful than most people here and tell you what happened:
I logged my ranger in iron marches, started surfing the events north, where I helped a char tame a giant devourer, went all the way north taking camps and killed a champion giant branded devourer at the end of the chain. I loved that chain.
Then i surfed another event chain that took me to the fire shaman base, where suddenly a million lvl 80s popped up to get their daily rare junk to sacrifice to the RNG gods in hopes to get their lolcursor for their lolgendaries. I salvaged mine and sold the ectos and moved on.
I found my way into the next zone, fireheart something, the one where you can hear the frightful unison wail of “LFG CoF P1” in the distance, repeating over and over. I think it’s odd to hear zombies when your enemies are mostly fire legion. Anyway, despite the noise, a pretty cool place. I never really had a chance to explore it before. The DEs were kicking, which always makes me happy. I followed all them to a spot where I killed another fire shaman boss. I love when I follow a chain where everything scales well.
Then I decided to follow the lava river to its source, just because, which led me to a cave with some asura jumping pads leading into it, which was cool. Then I found a whole hodoring asura lab in there. idefinitely love it when it happens. I mean things like this STILL happen on my 3rd char. Then I finished it, got the achievement to the kindergarten pirate story thinggie I didn’t even know was there, and beat the very cool golem boss at the end.
Then I realized I played the whole hodoring day and didn’t even notice the time and levels fly by. It was fun. My 3rd highest alt and it’s still fun.
So, there you go. I realize I wasn’t supposed to leave the zone, but that’s usually impossible. I always keep going.

Logged into my level 15 warrior in metrica province. I ran around killing hyleks for the first 5 minutes and then ran off to see what kind of weird stuff I could climb. I even spent a few seconds making a golem spin around by running around it spamming the F key. I had fun. I’m surprised I enjoyed any of this. Especially killing hyleks which are my farming spot for coffers or getting a new character weapon skills… and whenever I do that even if its for 5 minutes it is BEYOND boring. Heck, I can’t even stand 1 minute of it. So, the fact that I didn’t have any goal in mind somehow made it fun. Another thing I noticed was I was able to focus more on the gameplay itself. In other words, I wasn’t playing as horribly as I usually do.

Okay this made me laugh.
Logged in with Lvl80 Thief, Kessex Hills.
Boring, the combat is just so boring in this game now that I’ve been playing Fighting Games and Action RPG’s. The most fun I had whilst I was playing, was just looking at the floating castle in Kessex Hills, wondering what’s inside it.
Not really sure what you’re expecting from this? Should “fun” just be handed to you? What’s “fun” to each player?
Yes, fun should be handed to you in a game. And second, that’s what I’m curious about. Is the gameplay fun alone or do the rewards make the most part.
The constraints are so biased, the result set is obviously going to be skewed to a particular portion of the player base.

This is true and intentional. If you choose your favorite activity your results will only reflect your preferences, not the experience. Of course you have fun doing your favorite thing.
It’s hard, almost impossible, to isolate the different aspects. This just seemed like the easiest way to do it to some extend. Also I want to add, it’s in no way my intention to point fingers or in any other way
devaluate someones preferences or opinion.
So you want to know how “fun” the general playerbase finds exploring? Or how many find exploring fun? :| Seems like a bit tedious way to arrive at that. (also note that the people who read the forums <<<<<<< people who actually play the game).
